“Can you make sure you sing Bon Jovi and hold his hand?” senior nurse Vasu Lingappa recalls being told by the patient’s wife, who couldn’t be with her dying husband. The Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton praised nurses from U.K. hospitals performing “acts of kindness” for their COVID-19 patients in a new video — including one wife’s musical request. The Duchess hopped on a video call with nurses from University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust and commended them for “going that extra mile” apart from their usual job duties. A senior nurse, Vasu Lingappa, told her about one of his dying patients and how the patient’s wife asked him to sing Bon Jovi while holding his hand. “She said, ...
Paris Jackson shared an emotional visual on Friday (Jan. 22) to accompany her collaboration with Manchester Orchestra‘s Andy Hull, “eyelids.” The black-and-white vignette finds the duo standing — first separately, then back-to-back — in a dark room as a light circles them. “Now I don’t know your name / It wouldn’t matter if I did anymore / Now I don’t know your name / I’m afraid of what’s under the floor,” they belt in the heartbreaking chorus. Jackson worked with Hull throughout the process of writing, producing and recording her debut album Wilted, which was released in December 2020. “Manchester Orchestra was the soundtrack to the most vital time in my life in regards to mourning and becoming who I am...
But the two awards don’t always go hand-in-hand. Of the 25 films to win the SAG Award for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture since the category’s inception in 1995 (the awards show’s second year), 12 have gone on to win the Oscar for best picture, 12 have gone on to be nominated for best picture (but not win), and one wasn’t even nominated for an Oscar for best picture. (That was Mike Nichols’ 1996 farce The Birdcage.) Looking at it from the other direction, of the last 25 Academy Award winners for best picture, all but three were at least nominated for the SAG cast award. The three Oscar winners for best picture that were not SAG-nominated in the cast category were Braveheart (1995), The Shape of Water (2017) and Green Book (2018). Are there any pattern...
The pieces are all coming together for the return of AREA21. Back in October 2020, Martin Garrix revealed the impending return of his side project with Maejor, stating that they had recorded enough new material to drop a full album. After purging AREA21’s social media platforms of all content earlier this month—a strategic move used by many producers to indicate new music on the way—fans have now received their next clue. Originally, it was believed that the new album would drop in March 2021. However, a mysterious new post by AREA21 could signal the release of new music earlier than expected. Though much of what’s to come still remains a mystery, fans can glean information from comments Garrix made in the telling interview from October. The Dutch...
The organizers of Ultra Music Festival are planning to cancel the event’s 2021 edition, according to a letter obtained by Billboard. The letter is dated January 21st, 2021 and came from Ultra’s attorney, Sandy York. Addressed to Miami City Manager Arthur Noriega, it reveals that York anticipates the City of Miami will invoke the “Force Majeure” clause in the festival’s Bayfront Park license agreement. The implementation of such a clause typically takes place due to unforeseeable circumstances—such as a pandemic—that prevent someone from fulfilling a contract. York believes the same COVID-19 conditions that precipitated the festival’s 2020 cancellation remain a threat in 2021. While no formal announcement has been made...
Derick Almena, the main tenant of the Oakland, California dilapidated warehouse known as the Ghost Ship, which served as an art collective and where he’d rent out space to artists, pleaded guilty to 36 charges of involuntary manslaughter on Friday, KTVU reports. The guilty plea means that Almena will avoid a second criminal trial related to the December 2016 fire that killed 36 in one of the deadliest club fires in American history. As part of the plea agreement, Almena will face between 9 and 12 years in jail. He already has served two years. The previous criminal case against Almena resulted in a mistrial last October. Almena’s co-defendant Max Harris was acquitted of all charges. Both men faced 36 charges of involuntary manslaughter and a maximum of 39 years in ...
