Back in September, Brandi Carlile released A Rooster Says as part of Record Store Day 2020’s second drop. The 12″ LP includes versions of “Black Hole Sun” and “Searching With My Good Eye Closed” recorded with Soundgarden’s surviving members; however, only those who were able to snag a physical copy were fortunate enough to hear the songs. Luckily for the rest of us, the singer-songwriter decided to end 2020 with a little surprise. On New Year’s Eve, she made the two-song album available via streaming services. Listen to Carlile’s covers of “Black Hole Sun” and “Searching With My Good Eye Closed” below. After news broke of MF DOOM’s passing on Thursday, tributes came pouring in. On Saturday, Thom Yorke paid his respects via Twitter. “I am so sad to hear MF Doom’s passing,” he wrote. “He was a massive inspiration to so many of us, changed things.. for me the way he put words was often shocking in it’s genius, using stream of consciousness in a way i’d never heard before …” In the post, Yorke linked to his remix of DOOM’s “Gazillion Ear,” which was a bonus track on what would end up being the rapper’s final solo album, 2009’s Born Like This. The Radiohead frontman and his bandmate Jonny Greenwood were also featured on the 2012 DOOM and Jneiro Jarel track “Retarded Fren.” See Yorke’s tribute below. I am so sad to hear MF Doom’s passing. Remember when Smash Mouth and some other bands so terrible that Trapt made it on to the promotional materials performed at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota back in August? It caused approximately 260,000 cases of COVID-19 according to one study, which means it probably affected more lives than anything any of the artists had done since appearing on the Shrek soundtrack. Not to be outdone, Florida hosted its own super-spreader event full of awful acts last night. Headlined by Vanilla Ice (no, really), the Trump campaign event saw approximately 500 guests attend a mask-optional night at the soon-to-be-former president’s Mar-a-Lago resort. In addition to the ’90s fossil, Mike Love continued his trend of pretending to represent the Beach Boys in support of Trump, des...
Bud Light Seltzer’s New Year’s Eve livestream was appropriately headlined by the human incarnation of Bud Light itself, better known as Post Malone. But if fans were expecting Posty to stick with his own tracks, they clearly hadn’t been paying attention to last year. Much like how the Crocs collaborator busted out his own take on Nirvana classics toward the beginning of quarantine, he closed the year with “Rooster” by Alice in Chains and “War Pigs” by Black Sabbath. And similarly to how the Nirvana set featured Travis Barker on drums, Malone got some help from his famous friends like Slash, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer (and Will Ferrell lookalike) Chad Smith, and Jane’s Addiction bassist Chris Chaney. The stream also included sets by Steve Aoki, Saweetie, Jack Harlow, and Sebastian Y...
Source: Kevin Mazur / Getty J. Cole could hang up his microphone right today and would deserve every accolade thrown his way, but it appears more music is coming sooner than later. The North Carolina MC and producer shared a somewhat cryptic Instagram post that seemingly hints at retirement. Born Jermaine Cole, the 35-year-old Dreamville honcho turns 36 next month and has been spending more time behind the scenes than in front of the camera. Cole has already suggested that retirement was on the horizon but he has continued to dangle the carrot ever so artfully as evidenced by his latest Instagram post. In an image of notepad atop recording studio equipment, Cole has marked off a number of goals for what he titled as, “The Fall Off Era.” Marked off on the list are “features” and “ROTD3,” th...
Vybe Together, an app promoting clandestine parties during the COVID-19 pandemic, has been removed from Apple’s App Store. After marketing primarily to young professionals on TikTok, the social media giant also banned the app. Using the slogan “Get your rebel on. Get your party on,” the platform invited users to organize and RSVP to illicit, unsafe parties that defy current COVID-19 restrictions instated by the US government. Since its removal from the App Store, Vybe Together has scrubbed most of its digital presence. Its website is no longer active, but an archival version offers a glimpse into how the app operates. After users apply by submitting their Instagram handle and photos, they are approved by the app’s moderators “if the host finds you in...
In a statement announcing Kendrick Lamar’s headlining spot at Denmark’s 2021 Roskilde Festival, an exciting tidbit was revealed about Lamar: there’s “new music along the way.” In a section simply called “New material on the way” the full release explained that the Pulitzer Prize-winning artist first played the fest in 2013, then again in 2015 after releasing To Pimp a Butterfly. “Two albums later – and with new material along the way – he is once again ready to take Roskilde Festival’s main stage with a concert that is likely to be one of the absolute highlights of the summer.” The festival is targeted for June 26 to July 3, 2021, with previously announced performers including The Strokes, Tyler, The Creator, Faith No More, HAIM, Thom Yorke’s Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes, Anderson .Pa...
If you were looking for a cross-generational pop-punk collaboration, here it is. Avril Lavigne offered a tantalizing caption to a photo of her hanging with Machine Gun Kelly and Mod Sun in a recording studio: “So are we ready for new music in the new year or what?” The behind-the-scenes photos also showed MGK both at a vocal mic and playing guitar. In addition to the tease of the rapper-turned-pop-punker’s contributions, Lavigne has long been working on her new album with producer John Feldmann of Goldfinger. Mod Sun (who Feldmann is also producing) has also been a part of Lavigne’s sessions. Back in January 2020, We The Kings frontman Travis Clark revealed to Alternative Press that he was working with Lavigne on music for her upcoming record as well, recalling the moment wh...
