You can order everything else on Amazon, so why not short-trip urban rides in the, um, Zoox? Envisioned as a strictly geofenced, mostly low-speed robotaxi, this tiny autonomous cube built by recent Amazon acquisition Zoox seats four, features four-wheel steering that permits it to maneuver into very tiny spaces, and is equally happy driving in either direction. It also has nothing to do with Zoosk, the online dating site. What’s Zoox? This Bay-Area autonomous vehicle startup was founded in 2014, built its first prototype in 2015, first demonstrated SAE Level-3 autonomy in 2017, began durability testing of production prototypes in 2019, then established a production line in Fremont, California and was acquired by Amazon in May 2020. And that name? It’s short for zooxanthel...
Source: Hennessy / Hennessy The NBA kicked off its 2020-21 season Tuesday (Dec. 22) and Hennessy is back on board as the official spirit of the league. The leading cognac maker leaned on the charismatic voice of Nasir “Nas” Jones and WNBA star Natasha Cloud to roll out its “New Lines” campaign. Nas, fresh off a Grammy nomination for his King’s Disease project with Hit-Boy, lends his distinctive voice and sincere poetics in a similar fashion to last year’s Lines campaign, remarking on the many ways to create within and outside the lines. Cloud, who won the 2019 WNBA championship as a guard with the Washington Mystics, has become known for her work off the court and has emerged as a leader on the social justice and public health fronts. Tonight’s marquee games are the Brooklyn Nets with star...

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. At the time of its closure, Barbey said the venerable title had bore the brunt of “the increasingly harsh economic realities” facing those creating journalism. In the years since, its website and social channels have been refreshed with articles posted from the vault. From next year, the site will get a revamp with fresh content. Also, the New York Times quotes Street Media CEO Brian Calle as saying the Village Voice will include a print periodical, expected to be published each quarter. “I think a lot of people will be hungry for this and I’m superoptimistic,” Calle told The Times. The Village Voice was the country’s first alternative newsweekly, founded in 1955 by a group that included legendary writer Norman Mailer. The title “r...
Soon after the clip went up, Dion reached out. “Aww, thank you so much Sam Smith. It was great to see you last year in London, and forget about me – I think you’re so amazing!! Take care … hope to see you again soon,” she wrote, from one great singer to another. Smith and Dion have been members of the mutual appreciation society for several years. In July 2019, the multiple Grammy Award winners professed their admiration for one another on social media. “Celine Dion changed my life,” Smith tweeted at the time. Both artists are wrapping big years in music, which would’ve been bigger still if COVID-19 didn’t mess with everyone’s travel and touring plans. Dion bagged the year’s No. 2 Top Tour, according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore. The Courage World...
Want a mid-engined Mercedes? Tough luck, Richie Rich. Despite decades of building some of the most desirable sports and supercars to ever tear a tire and sublimate a straightaway, the amount of mid-engined cars with Mercedes’ tri-pointed star on the front grille can be counted on one hand. Recently, Mercedes-Benz stirred hearts—and offshore bank accounts—with its allegedly forthcoming Mercedes-AMG One hypercar that’s still stuck in development hell. But if it’s a low-slung Benz supercar you want, you’re stuck with hunting down one of the ultra-low-production CLK GTR homologation specials from 1998-1999, or “settling” for the AMG-sourced V-12 in either the Pagani Zonda or Huayra. Or you could simply be the high-bidder on the one-of-one 1993 Isdera Co...

Source: Thaddaeus McAdams / Getty Don’t be fooled by his boyish young looks, Pharrell Williams a.k.a. Skateboard P a.k.a. one-half of the legendary Neptunes is a veteran in the music game, with icon status established. More than 25 years in the man has produced for everyone from Jay-Z to Britney Spears in his illustrious career and he’s still got lots of gas left in the tank. Recently Skateboard P indulged in much adult juice alongside Noreaga for Drink Champs and got into some eyebrow-raising moments he’s lived in his music career. Aside from Nore dropping some gems like the fact that Biggie called him before he died telling him he wanted to hop on the remix to “T.O.N.Y.,” Pharrell’s definitely got some stories to tell himself and we can’t believe most of them. Here are the 11 things we l...
As of Sunday, Congress has thankfully reached a deal on a $900 billion stimulus bill that will provide urgent aid to those most affected by the pandemic. The hard-hit music industry has been included in the measure via a designated $15 billion package called the Save Our Stages Act. The bill is expected to officially pass in Congress early this week. Through the provision, independent music venues and movie theaters—along with similar cultural institutions—will become eligible for grants through the Small Business Administration, with awards of up to $10 million earmarked for six months of payroll, rent and other necessary costs. Venues that have lost more than 90% of their annual revenue will be able to apply in the first two weeks before the process opens up to those who have lost at lea...
