Odetta, Odetta Sings Dylan (1965)Dylan has credited Odetta with turning him on to folk music – he has said he heard her album Odetta Sings Ballads and Blues and “went out and traded my electric guitar and amplifier for an acoustical guitar.” Here, on one of the first albums of Dylan covers, she makes some of his early political songs sound like they’re old folk tunes and brings a frank earthiness to “Baby, I’m In the Mood for You.” It sounds like this version influenced Miley Cyrus’ 2017 performance of the song on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Really. The Hollies, Words and Music By Bob Dylan (1969)When Graham Nash left the Hollies to join Crosby, Stills & Nash, his former band recorded what he regarded as a relatively tame album of D...
StageIt was founded in 2009 as a livestream platform but has seen a, wait for it, unprecedented surge in activity since March. A leader in providing a platform for artists to host ticketed livestreams, they helped acts monetize live performances (both in ticket sales and tips during broadcasts) when the most lucrative piece of artists’ business was on pause. Perhaps the most successful artist on the platform was Blue October. The Texan rock band played a series of livestreams centered around different albums from their discography and collectively grossed more than $506,000 across 10 streams. This achievement is, in part, due to the group’s engagement with fans, walking a thin line between selling tickets on the platform in order to earn a living and respecting the delicate financial polit...
Democrat Waters, who has represented California’s 43rd congressional district since 1991, is the most senior of the 12 Black women in Congress, and is currently the chairwoman of the Committee on Financial Services. The rapper’s NYT essay, accompanied by a video, was entitled “Megan Thee Stallion: Why I Speak Up for Black Women,” and it dove into the her feelings about how Black women are disrespected and disregarded, using her recent experience as a victim of a violent incident as an example. “I was recently the victim of an act of violence by a man. After a party, I was shot twice as I walked away from him,” she wrote, in reference to the July 12 incident in which rapper Tory Lanez is accused of firing four shots from outside his ve...

You can now add Muse to the growing list of fans of 10-year-old music prodigy Nandi Bushell. After wowing Tom Morello and declaring victory on her long–running drum battle with Dave Grohl, Bushell’s next order of business was to tackle Muse’s “Hysteria.” As you can see below, she did the song justice and then some. “Ever since I jammed Hysteria by @muse on drums I wanted to learn the bass line too as it’s so so #awesome! It is the HARDEST bass line I have ever learned. I had to concentrate A LOT,” she tweeted. Bushell’s version made its way to the British trio and they responded in kind. “Absolutely killed it again @Nandi_Bushell So much talent,” Muse tweeted. As you can imagine, Bushell was thrilled to hear from another huge rock band voicing their approval to her version of th...

In the same Instagram post, Love shared a video of her late husband, Kurt Cobain, telling the crowd at a Nirvana show that Love was “the best fuck in the world.” In a previous Instagram post, Love had called Cyrus’ cover, which performed on The Howard Stern show, “sweet” and expounded on the song’s origins. “I had to write most of the lyrics on my arm in Sharpie as I ran out of paper,” she recalled of the song, which was written in 20 minutes in a bathroom in Cambridge, Massachusetts. “People were pounding on the door as I wrote it. It was played for the first time about an hour later, at the Virgin megastore in Boston. It was about a boy, whose ba...

The Beatles’ Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, along with Sean and Julian Lennon, remember their bandmate and father on the day when, 40 years ago, John Lennon was shot and killed in front of his New York City apartment, in what news outlets at the time called “an unspeakable tragedy.” A deranged fan, Mark David Chapman, killed the former Beatle with two gunshots. Lennon’s Yoko Ono was by his side at the time and the singer was only 40. In 2020, Chapman was denied parole for the 11th time; he’ll next be eligible in 2022. On social media, McCartney said, “a sad sad day but remembering my friend John with the great joy he brought to the world.” A sad sad day but remembering my friend John with the great joy he brought to the world. “We’re talking about some things. I really feel like it should (happen),” she said. “That was always my goal but it was important to write the book first.” And who could play Mariah in the film? “I don’t know, we’re figuring out different takes on that.” So, that all sounds promising. Another promising sign is the performance of “All I Want For Christmas Is You” in the singles chart race in the U.K., where it’s on track to hit No. 1 for the very first time. What a perfect gift for the Queen of Christmas. Also in her chat with Fallon, Carey discussed her fave Christmas songs. “I love all the classics,” she enthused, name-checking Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole and more. Watch below. Her mullet, we learned, was a homemade job. It was cut by Miley’s mom, the same hairdresser to Billy Ray. Miley also scored an early Christmas present, a diamond record for her 2009 hit “Party In The U.S.A.” She won’t receive a more challenging gift to unwrap this year. Also, the “Wrecking Ball” singer was virtually linked-up with a thrilled fan, Paul. “I hope you haven’t lived your life by doing everything that I do. It’s very controversial, some of those activities,” she said. Later in the show, Miley performed album “Prisoner,” clad in studded black leather. Watch below.
