Later in the interview, Parton spoke of her mother, who she says was a good singer and would sing songs like “Bury Me Beneath the Willow Tree” acapella at home. Parton, who has a new album out called A Holly Dolly Christmas, also wrote a pandemic-themed song called “When Life is Good Again.” She told Colbert, “I felt really glad to write that,” noting that it is uplifting with lyrics like, “When life is good again, I’ll be a better friend, a better person.” “I can’t wait for this year to be over, can you?” Parton exclaimed. Colbert wouldn’t let Parton leave without naming her top three songs from her own body of work. “The Coat of Many Colors” was Parton’s first pick, with the singer noting that...
Source: Paul Morigi / Getty One of the most beloved party destinations in Miami remains closed leaving thousands of partygoers and many rappers no place to call home in South Beach. The brains behind Club LIV is discussing his game plan. As spotted in Billboard Magazine, David Grutman conducted in an in-depth interview with the music industry periodical. Since March the nightlife hotspot, which in the last ten years has become a must-visit for any rapper that is in town, has been closed since March due to the pandemic. In June, the city gave the green light for restaurants to reopen but for many the move was premature. The events guru revealed that he too thought that the coronavirus wasn’t going to be a concern for long. “We thought the world was back,” he explained. “I was naïve enough t...
Source: Kevin Winter / Getty Naomi Campbell’s career as a trailblazing fashion icon has been well documented and revered, but her politics, however, has met its fair share of criticism for being unconventional at times. Remember the Gucci blackface sweater fiasco? Yeah. Well, that’s not the case these days. On her latest cover story for Vogue’s November 2020 issue, the multihyphenated activist drew a clear line in the sand on her views about the oppressive state of society when it comes to race matters. Fundamentally, she reclassified what type of affliction people of color have experienced. “I never used to say the word racism; I just used to say, it’s territorialism,” she said. “I never wanted people to say that I used that as an excuse, that I was throwing that word ou...
Source: Courtesy Netflix / Netflix Netflix has premiered the trailer for Chadwick Boseman‘s final film, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, based on August Wilson’s award-winning 1984 stage play. Although Boseman’s character, Levee, is fictitious, the film shows how the actual creation of her hit song, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” came to fruition and also revealing that the song was written for a dance by the same name. Helmed by George C. Wolfe, who won Tony awards for directing the play “Angels in America: Millennium Approaches” and the musical “B...
Source: Edward Berthelot / Getty Lately, it feels like Teyana “Spike Tey” Taylor is really finding her footing as a music video director and in her latest visuals continues to get artistic with it to show she bout that creative life. In her new visuals to “Lose Each Other” the artist/director uses a couple that uses dance artistry to tell a story of, well, we’re not good dance readers like that, but it looked like a debate over where to eat dinner or something. Nice touch having Elton John man the piano while all that performance art stuff was going on. And after a lengthy break, Ella Mai returns with a clip for “Not Another Love Song” which finds the young singer in love and dancing with her new man boo who has swept her off her feet. Lucky man. The CMT Music Awards will honor some of the best country music videos of the year on Wednesday night, but which country artist has the best music videos of all time? Carrie Underwood could win video of the year for the eighth time if “Drinking Alone” picks up the award. Taylor Swift and Keith Urban tie for having the second-most awards in this category with three each. However, Urban could pass over Swift if his nominated “Polaroid” clip takes home the title for his fourth time. But according to the Country Music Association Awards or the Academy of Country Music Awards, Brad Paisley has nine music video of the year awards to his name from both shows — four from the CMAs and five from the ACM Awards. NiziU’s “Make you happy” has coasted along in the top ten for 15 weeks now, maintaining momentum in downloads and streaming ever since the group’s pre-debut number was digitally released in June. This week, the track sees downloads increasing slightly from 9,500 to 10,895 units and streaming dipping from 6,020,446 to 5,909,112 streams, and although the figures fluctuate each week in a similar fashion, the nine-member girl group — yet to make its official debut — continues to generate enough hype to stay lodged in the upper regions of the Japan song chart. King Gnu’s long-running hit “Hakujitsu” returns to the top 10 after 14 weeks, powered by streaming, downloads, video, and karaoke points thanks to increased media exposure from around the end of Septemb...
Earlier today, it was announced that Spencer Davis, the guitarist of the Spencer Davis Group, died on Tuesday at the age of 81. Perhaps the most famous alumnus from the group was a young Steve Winwood, who joined the group as a teen. Winwood remembered Davis with a statement on his website. Recalling how they met when he was 13 (Davis was 22 at the time) in Birmingham, Winwood said that Davis was “an early pioneer of the British folk scene, which, in his case embraced folk blues, and eventually what was then called ‘Rhythm and Blues,’” the statement continues. “He influenced my tastes in music, he owned the first 12-string guitar I ever saw, and he was taken with the music of Huddie ‘Lead belly’ Ledbetter, and Big Bill Broonzy. I’d already got a big brother who influenced me greatly, and S...
Making music on Zoom — on the surface — seems weird (that whole connectivity thing). But, yet again, a group of musicians joining forces to show strength in numbers managed to work. Mastodon’s Bill Kelliher, Korn’s Ray Luzier, Anthrax’s Frank Bello, DMC, Filter’s Richard Patrick and more collaborated for a cover of Faith No More’s “We Care A Lot” in support of the Roadie Relief effort, which aims to help out of work crew members who have been impacted by the pandemic. The collaboration was organized by Slaves on Dope members Jason Rockman and Kevin Jardine. Also featuring on the song were Walter Schreifels of Quicksand, Dennis Lyxzén of Refused and more. Check it out below. [embedded content] You Deserve to Make Money Even When you are looking for Dates O...
Source: Retna/Avalon.red / WENN Even though Joe Biden is still in the middle of the fight of his life he has landed a major victory. The Beastie Boys have given him the green light for using their work. As spotted on USA Today, the presidential hopefully made history in a way no other politician has been able to do so. Last week his team premiered an advertisement during Sunday night’s NFL game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cleveland Browns. The spot in question prominently features Joe Malcoun, owner of the Blind Pig, a performance venue in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The proprietor shares his frustration on how Donald Trump handled the Covid-19 pandemic and the financial strain he endured while remaining closed. “A lot of restaurants and bars that have been mainstays for years wi...
Source: Jesse Grant / Getty The Avengers, well some of them, will reassemble one more time to help Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. Don’t worry, Chris Pratt won’t be there, and that’s fine because he’s the worst Chris in Hollywood, according to Twitter, due to allegedly being a Trump-supporting, anti-LGBTQ Republican. Anyway, Don Cheadle, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Rudd, Mark Ruffalo, and Zoe Saldana are slated to appear at the virtual fundraising event moderated by Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame directors the Russo Brothers. The virtual event is aptly called Voters Assemble! goes down on Tuesday (Oct.19) at 3:45 PM PT / 6:45 PM ET and to attend, all you have to do is donate any amount to help the Biden/Harris presidential ticket defeat our dumb version of Th...
When Bruce Springsteen’s Letter to You Radio was first announced by Apple Music, it was effectively guaranteed that the show’s guests would be a who’s who of rock history. Today, that lineup happened to feature Eddie Vedder and Dave Grohl to chat about Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, and a whole lot more. The conversation jumped flowed through topics like personal and musical growth, the art of the demo, rising to musical fame, and the brotherhood among bands. “What was the difference between making that journey with Nirvana and making it with the Foo Fighters?” Springsteen asked Grohl at one point. “Well, probably just like you, I would imagine, you start playing music when you’re young, because something catches your heart, right?” Grohl answered. “And for me personally, it was the Bea...
