Elton John is gearing up to release songs from his upcoming massive box set, and he’s gone deep into his archive to uncover songs that have never been publicly shared. That includes today’s unveiling of “Regimental Sgt. Zippo.” In introducing the song, John wrote on Twitter, “From the album that never was… Regimental Sgt. Zippo was going to be the title track of my unreleased debut album in 1969.” It’s different than what you’ve come to expect from the legendary piano man. It has a tinge of psychedelia and a very kaleidoscopic vibe that’s reflected in the clip. The tune is an obvious nod to the Beatles, when you think about it, John and John Lennon becoming pals a few years later makes sense due to the band’s influence on the songwriter. You can check it out below. [embedded content] Elton...
Pierre Kezdy, bassist of Naked Raygun, the Chicago band who was a favorite of Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and producer Steve Albini, has died (Oct. 9) at the age of 58. The cause was cancer, reports the Chicago Sun-Times. Grohl said he was about 13 when Naked Raygun “changed everything I knew about music,” Lou Lombardo, manager of Naked Raygun, told the Sun-Times. The future Nirvana drummer saw the band at an all-ages show at Chicago’s storied Cubby Bear club. In his Sonic Highways documentary for HBO about the city’s music scene, Grohl says the gig “just turned my world upside-down.” About 30 years later, Grohl asked Naked Raygun to open for Foo Fighters when his band played Wrigley Field in 2015. At the 2013 Riot Fest in Chicago’s Douglas Park, Fall Out Boy invited Raygun frontma...
Nick Cave has been quite prolific during pandemic times, and showing no signs of slowing down, he’s now teamed up with Belgian composer Nicholas Lens on a new opera. Entitled L.I.T.A.N.I.E.S, the two worked on the project at the beginning of the COVID-19 lockdown, since both artists had the time. Lens took inspiration from his cycling trips around Brussels and previous journeys to Japanese temples, a release (via Pitchfork) reported. Cave, who contributed a libretto to the project, said in statement that,“Nicholas called me during lockdown and asked if I would write 12 litanies. I happily agreed. The first thing I did after I put down the phone was search ‘What is a litany?’ I learned that a litany was a series of religious petitions, and realised I had been writing litanies all my li...
Rivian has a lot on its plate right now, partnering with Ford on a Lincoln-badged electric SUV and preparing its own R1S SUV and R1T pickup truck to enter production late this year. In its free time, seemingly, the upstart electric carmaker has plans to build 100,000 delivery vans for Amazon. From what we can tell in a newly released video, the first Rivian-built van has finally been delivered, and there is a ton of neat features you might not expect to find find on a delivery vehicle. There are a host a new safety features included with the van, too. A 360-degree view camera, various driver assistance aids, and a strengthened driver’s side door all make the van a more safe place for delivery drivers while giving them a better idea of what’s around the van. There are also brigh...
Honda’s CR-V is a staple of one of the most popular vehicle segments in America, the 1997 original having helped start the compact crossover craze back in the late 1990s alongside the Toyota RAV4. It’s familiar, even a little boring—a practical conveyance that might as well be wearing slacks and a dress shirt buttoned all the way up. Well, except for that one time in 1998 . . . when the CR-V really let it all hang out with a one-off convertible model. That’s right, there was a Honda CR-V convertible. It’s not the craziest thing to conceive—at least not at the time. Remember, Toyota was gearing up to sell a two-door, convertible RAV4 around then. The CR-V was a bit weirder, being as it was built from a first-generation four-door CR-V. Only one appears to have be...
