Smashing Pumpkins Return With ‘Cyr’ and ‘The Colour of Love,’ Confirm New Album Is Coming
The Smashing Pumpkins are getting ready to smash it up once more with a brand new studio album, kicked off by the new tracks “Cyr” and “The Colour of Love.” Recorded in Chicago and produced by frontman Billy Corgan, the two tunes and the others to come feature Corgan and his fellow founding members James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin, along with longtime guitarist Jeff Schroeder. The synth-powered “Cyr” has a retro sonic sheen, and it’s accompanied with an official performance video, directed by the Pumpkins’ creative partner Linda Strawberry. MyChannel, Inc., which specializes in video and e-commerce technology, says they helped West get his Sunday Service events off the ground. A couple of weeks after teasing activity, the Smashing Pumpkins are officially back. Billy Corgan and company released a pair of new songs, “Cyr” and “The Colour of Love,” the first songs from an upcoming album they’re working on that will be out on Sumerian Records. The lineup — which is essentially the founding one sans D’Arcy Wretzky — also includes guitarist Jeff Schneider. “‘Cyr’ is dystopic folly,” Corgan said in a statement. “One soul against the world sort of stuff, set against a backdrop of shifting loyalties and sped up time. A few weeks after revealing details for his upcoming album, Hey Clockface, Elvis Costello has shared another song…that isn’t on the album. On Friday, Costello unveiled “Phonographic Memory,” which serves as the B-side to the previously released “We Are All Cowards Now.” According to a release, the song “imagines a post-war ceremony involving an archive recording of the voice of Orson Welles and someone identified only as, “President Swift.’” In addition to “We Are All Cowards Now,” Costello has shared “No Flag,” “Hetty O’Hara Confidential” from the upcoming album.
