Billie Joe Armstrong understands that 2020 has been so weird that we don’t know even really know what time is anymore. So his cover of Billy Bragg’s “A New England” for No Fun Monday actually happened on a Friday (July 10). “Welcome to No Fun Monday on a Friday because no one knows what day it is anyway,” the Green Day leader captioned a post on Instagram. “I love this song penned by Billy Bragg. Also a great version by Kirsty MacColl.” If there’s any musician who’s been consistent on the sonic content front, Armstrong has been building a solid catalog for No Fun Mondays. So far, he has covered The Wonders’ “That Thing You Do!” from the 1996 film of the same out of tribute to the late Adam Schlesinger as well as John Lennon’s “Gimme Some Truth,” Tommy James & The Shondells’ “I Think We...

Earlier this month, Nick Cave announced that he’ll be doing a special solo performance on July 23. And today (July 13), he dropped the trailer for Idiot Prayer: Nick Cave Alone at Alexandra Palace. In the video, Cave is seen penning some things in a notebook before walking into an empty Alexandra Palace where a piano is positioned in the center of the main hall. Along with the trailer, he talked about the creation of this show. “I loved playing deconstructed versions of my songs at these shows, distilling them to their essential forms – with an emphasis on the delivery of the words,” he wrote in a note to fans. “I felt I was rediscovering the songs all over again, and started to think about going into a studio and recording these reimagined versions at some stage – whenever I could find th...
It’s been a few years since Yo La Tengo have released new music. But in quarantine, the indie vets decided to drop a new song titled “James and Ira demonstrate mysticism and some confusion holds (Monday)” that they recently recorded at their practice facility in New Jersey while in quarantine. The group shared the song on their new Bandcamp page. Ira Kaplan explained the origins of the song in a statement on the description on the newly-minted page: If you’ve spent any time hanging out with us at our rehearsal space in Hoboken—that pretty much covers none of you—you’ve heard us playing formlessly (he said, trying to sidestep the word “improvising”). Most of the songs we’ve written in the last 25 years have begun that way, but often we do it for no other reason than to push away the outside...
A trio of tracks from Juice WRLD’s posthumous album release Legends Never Die (Polydor) are pushing for top 20 berths on the U.K. singles chart. Following the weekend’s sales and streaming activity, the hip-hop artist’s “Come & Go” with Marshmello flies in at No. 10 on the Official Chart: First Look. Also, “Life’s A Mess” vaults 66-12 on the sales blast, and “Conversations” is at No. 14, according to the Official Charts Company. The 21-year-old rapper (real name Jared Anthony Higgins) died last December following an accidental overdose of painkillers. Juice WRLD has a posthumous U.K. No. 1 to his name, for his contribution on Eminem’s “Godzilla.” His next highest appearance on the Official U.K. Singles Chart is a No. 10 peak for his signature tune from 2018, “Lucid Dreams.” Legen...
The 20th anniversary edition of Australia’s Splendour In the Grass is more than a year away, though festival-fans just got a taste of what’s to come. On Monday, organizers confirmed Tyler, The Creator and The Strokes have signed up for the rescheduled Splendour dates, now set for July 23-25, 2021. Also, virtual British band Gorillaz will slot into the top of the bill. The Damon Albarn-led project replaces Flume, who was originally booked for Splendour’s 2020 edition, but isn’t available for the new dates in 2021. It’s something of a “Feel Good Inc” development from Splendour’s producers Jessica Ducrou and Paul Piticco, who had tentatively pushed back this year’s show by three months to October 2020 due to the pandemic. Last month, Ducrou and Piticco conceded those plans couldn’...

Beloved Chattahoochee Hills, Georgia music fest Imagine Music Festival is the latest major festival brand to kick the bucket due to the impact of COVID-19. Back in April 2020, representatives announced their plans to host the 2020 iteration of Imagine at Bouckaert Farms, the former site of TommorowWorld, from September 18th to 20th. “While we wanted to be sensitive to the stresses that everyone is facing with COVID-19, we also wanted Imagine to be a positive light through the barrage negative news,” said founders Glenn and Madeleine Goodhand at the time. While that light has effectively dimmed, it still flickers with hope after organizers announced the festival’s rescheduled 2021 dates, September 17th to 19th, in an official statement shared on the...
Walt Disney Studios’ President of Music & Soundtracks, Mitchell Leib, has confirmed that a sequel to Tron: Legacy is in the works. In a recent episode of the “Light The Fuse” podcast, Leib demystified rumors surrounding the follow-up to Joe Kosinski‘s critically acclaimed 2010 film, which was scored by legendary electronic music duo Daft Punk. “We’re looking at making a sequel to Tron now. We’re making a Tron 3,” Leib said. He also shared the news that the film’s screenplay was complete, lauding it as “a really phenomenal script.” It was what he said about Daft Punk, however, that adrenalized the EDM community into a fever pitch. “The right and first thing to do is to bring Daft Punk back and see if they want to [re...
