Retired Delta council workers, teachers protest non payment of benefits

Retired Local Government workers and primary school teachers, stormed the streets of Asaba, Delta State in protest against the non-payment of their retirement benefits. Clad in black attires, the retirees numbering over 1000, marched through the streets of the State capital to the State House of Assembly complex and Government House, chanting songs of disenchantment. The protesters, however, refused to be addressed by the Head of Service, Reginald Bayoko, Senior Special Assistant (Religion Matters), and current Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Apostle Silvanus Okorote and State NLC chairman, Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku. Nigerian government justifies choice of Siemens for power grid expansion

The federal government yesterday defended the choice of German firm, Siemens AG, for its 25,000 megawatts grid expansion, saying the German firm was chosen to expand Nigeria’s power grid because the company was best qualified to rehabilitate the dilapidated electricity infrastructure in Nigeria. The Minister of Power, Mr. Sale Mamman, who disclosed this in series of tweets via his official Twitter handle, explained that the Siemens deal would expand Nigeria’s power grid capacity to 25,000 megawatts. Court orders police to produce Bayelsa governorship candidate

The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday, again ordered the police to produce Vijah Opuama, the Bayelsa Governorship Candidate in the Nov. 16, 2019 election. Newsmen report that Justice Taiwo Taiwo, on Aug. 3 and Sept. 2, ordered that Opuama, who was said to be in police custody, be produced in court but the orders were disregarded by the security outfit. Opuama’s Lawyer, Michael Odey, had, on Aug. 31, brought an ex-parte application before the court, asking the police to show cause why the detainee should not be released unconditionally. Rivers government reopens NLC secretariat as labour suspends rally

The Officials of the Rivers Government, on Tuesday, unsealed the Nigeria Labour Congress secretariat in Port Harcourt, following collective bargaining agreement signed with the union. Newsmen report that the state government had sealed the NLC secretariat in March for correction of structural deficit. Mr Ayuba Wabba, NLC President, on Sept. 4, issued a notice to hold mass rally over the sealed secretariat among other lingering industrial dispute. However, after a six hour deliberation on Monday, the organised labour reached an agreement with the state government to address all contending issues and for the protest to be called off. CSO urges President Buhari to freeze NDDC account

The Act for Positive Transformation Initiative, a Civil Society Organisation (CSO), has requested President Muhammadu Buhari to freeze the account of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and suspend all further spending in the commission. Mr Johnson Kolawale, the Head, Directorate of Research, Strategy, and Programme, made the call at a news conference on Monday in Abuja. He alleged that plans were ongoing to make fraudulent expenditures by top officials in the commission. Kolawale revealed that the commission had continued to spend funds against due process and against the directive of the President. 27 Stranded Nigerian girls evacuated from Lebanon arrive Abuja

Another batch of 27 stranded Nigerian girls evacuated from Lebanon by the Federal Government and the Lebanese Government, as well as its community in Nigeria arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Sunday. Receiving them, Ferdinand Nwonye, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who represented the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, said the evacuation was in fulfillment of the Nigerian Government’s promise to ensure no Nigerian is left stranded in Lebanon. Nigeria confirmed virus cases top 55,000

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Sunday night, announced 100 new COVID-19 cases. The new cases were reported from 10 states – Lagos (39), FCT (22), Kaduna (19), Oyo (7), Ebonyi (6), Edo (3), Katsina (1), Ekiti (1), Bauchi (1), Nasarawa (1) It brought the total in the country to 55,0085, six months after the index case was diagnosed. Out of that number, 43,013 patients have been discharged and 1,057 deaths have been recorded. Lagos still has the highest number with 18,347, while Kogi has reported only five. Umar Danbatta: NCC remits N362.34 billion to Nigerian government

Fix Africa News Magazine Executive Vice Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof Umar Danbatta, says the commission remitted N362.34 billion into the Consolidated Revenue Fund (CRF) of the Federal Government between 2015 and now. At an interactive session with media managers and news editors at the weekend, he also noted that broadband penetration jumped from six per cent in 2015 to 43.02 per cent by the end of June 2020 leading to 199,307,796 by the end of the first half of 2020. IOM: Social media pushing youths out of Nigeria

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) says social media is a major tool influencing young Nigerians to leave Nigeria. Franz Celestin, IOM Chief of Mission, said this in an interview with newsmen. Citing the number of Nigerian returnees from Libya, Celestin stated that their reason for migration could not have been poverty or insecurity. He disclosed most were from Southern parts of the country whose states were more secured and economically viable. The IOM boss observed that young Nigerians get easily moved by ‘success stories’ people post on social media.
