Holly Willoughby turns 40 today, and she found a way to celebrate the occasion in the sweetest way possible — by slipping on the exact same dress her mum wore for her 40th birthday decades ago. “This photo of my Mum was taken on her 40th birthday at the party she had in the garden,” Willoughby wrote in the heartfelt caption accompanying a side-by-side photo of her mum and herself on Instagram. “I remember this day so clearly. It’s a strange thing to reach the age you remember your Mum being! …I asked her if she’d kept the dress and of course she had… Strange moment zipping it up this morning, wondering how she felt on her big day … I can’t be with my Mum or Dad today but wearing this in her honour makes me feel closer to them… lov...

Brie Larson in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Edgar Wright’s geeky action-comedy romance Scott Pilgrim vs. the World turned 10 this year, and part of the anniversary celebrations include a reissue of the movie’s soundtrack and the first-ever physical release of Nigel Godrich’s score. ABKCO has now set a release date of March 26th, 2021 for the anniversary release. Say hello to the official Seven Evil Exes Edition, an expanded, limited-edition, 4xLP picture disc box set featuring the soundtrack and score to Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. The OST, which is literally one of the greatest movie soundtracks of all time, will include 24-minutes’ worth of unreleased music from Beck, Sex Bob-Omb, and the movie-only version of Metric’s “Black Sheep” as sung by Brie Larson — a fan-favorite that’s never be...
Crate Digging is a recurring feature in which we take a deep dive into a genre and turn up several albums or bands that all music fans should know about. As classic gaming series Guitar Hero turns 15 this week, we look at 10 bands a generation of fans likely learned about through gaming rather than crate digging. In the mid-to-late 2000s, the Guitar Hero series was the party game to own. Initially a partnership between publisher/hardware manufacturer RedOctane and developer Harmonix, the brand built upon the latter’s prior music-based projects — such as Frequency, Karaoke Revolution, and Amplitude — and other genre titans like Dance Dance Revolution, GuitarFreaks, Gitaroo Man, and PaRappa the Rapper. Essentially, players had to match button combinations and rhythmic cues to the arrangement...
It’s not surprising that Tom Petty’s passing came to inspire an annual birthday festival. Anyone who ever attended a Heartbreakers show knows that infinite feeling and suspicion that a summer night and a favorite song might somehow go on forever. That may not have turned out to be quite true, but artists, friends, and fans have been flocking to Gainesville since Petty’s death to hold on as tightly as possible to what the man and his music meant to so many of us. This year, of course, posed additional challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but that didn’t stop Petty’s family and friends from piecing together a heartfelt tribute that not only celebrated what would’ve been the artist’s 70th birthday but raised money for several notable, music-related causes. <img aria-describedby="c...
David Bowie, photo by Michael J. Weller On November 6th, Parlophone Records will mark the 50th anniversary of David Bowie’s The Man Who Sold the World by reissuing the album under its original title and with its original artwork. Bowie originally sought to call his third studio album Metrobolist, a homage to Fritz Lang’s 1927 film of the same name. However, for its US release, Mercury Records retitled the album as The Man Who Sold the World without Bowie’s consultation. The forthcoming reissue will be released under the name of Metrobolist and with artwork from Mike Weller, the artist who created the album’s original animated artwork. The cover’s gate-fold sleeve also features unseen images from Keith MacMillan’s “dress” shoot at Haddon Hall that later covered...
Now this is a story all about how you could end up staying in a nostalgia dream pad. Will Smith has listed the Los Angeles mansion used for exterior shots of his Fresh Prince of Bel-Air home for rental on Airbnb. The chance to sit on Big Willie’s throne comes as the classic sitcom celebrates its 30th anniversary — and a night’s stay will only cost you $30. That will get you a private wing of the mansion, what would have been Will’s section had the Fresh Prince actually been filmed inside. While the rest of the home will be empty, you’ll have access to a king-size bedroom, a full bathroom, the pool area, an outdoor lounge space, and a dining room. Guests will be able to play basketball in the bedroom (“you read that right — IN the bedroom,” Smith confirms on the listing), spin DJ Jazzy...
Girls Aloud split in 2013, and to be honest, we’re still not really over it. What we’re also not over? Their Y2K style that featured lots of sparkle, ruching, and many a coordinated outfit. The dissolving of the group was announced after a reunion show in Liverpool, when they told the world via Twitter, “Dear Alouders, we just want to say from the bottom of our hearts Thank you!! This tour has been an amazing experience and the perfect chance to say thank you for being on this journey with us through a decade. It has far exceeded any of our dreams and we hope we are forever your inspiration and reminder that dreams really do glitter!! Your love and support will stay with us forever but we have now come to the end of our incredible time together. Love you lots.” The ...
Gimme a Reason takes classic albums celebrating major anniversaries and breaks down song by song the reasons we still love them so many years later. This time we make like a rolling stone with Bob Dylan and Highway 61 Revisited. Highway 61 Revisited is unanimously considered not only one of Bob Dylan’s greatest albums, but also one of the most influential and enduring records of its genre and time. Released mere months after the highly controversial Bringing It All Back Home (whose focus on electric instrumentation and cryptic lyricism — punctuated by Dylan’s appearance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival — left many devotees feeling betrayed and incensed), the LP saw its creator delve further into those polarizing elements. The end result was a collection that brilliantly and bravely mixed ...
