Dua Lipa has had a truly breakout year, and she’s riding the wave all the way through to the end: today, the pop star officially made her NPR Tiny Desk debut. Lipa performed a “Home” edition of the long-running concert series that featured stripped-back versions of songs from her Grammy-nominated 2020 album Future Nostalgia . Although these renditions of “Levitating”, “Pretty Please”, “Love Again”, and “Don’t Start Now” are more minimal than the glossy forms they took on Future Nostalgia, the performance was by no means a solo set. With much of the world stuck at home, Spillage Village took us all to church by way of their NPR Tiny Desk concert that aired Friday (Oct. 23). The sprawling Spillage Village collective, consisting of J.I.D, EARTHGANG, Mereba, Benji, Jurdan Bryant, Hollywood JB, and 6LACK (who was not present for this event), are all strong acts on their own but together they make a particular brand of magic. Bright Eyes Perform Cross-Continental Tiny Desk (Home) Concert: Watch
Artists have been taking some understandable liberties with the conceit of NPR’s Tiny Desk (Home) concert series. Recent performances saw Billie Eilish in front of a cut-out cardboard set of the NPR offices, Phoebe Bridgers behind a miniature Resolute Desk, and BTS inside a Seoul record shop. Bright Eyes might have them all beat, however, as their Tiny Desk (Home) show featured probably the biggest desk of all: a Neve 8068 recording console. Nilüfer Yanya Debuts New Song “Day 7” During NPR Tiny Desk (Home) Concert: Watch
Nilüfer Yanya landed on both our Top 50 Songs and Top 50 Albums of 2019 lists thanks to her incredible debut album, Miss Universe. Today, she’s made her return to the spotlight with a new song, “Day 7”, which she premiered a performance for NPR’s Tiny Desk (Home) Concert series. This is technically Yanya’s second entry in the Tiny Desk catalog. Last year, the English artist visited the NPR headquarters to play a full-band Tiny Desk set featuring three tracks from Miss Universe. NPR Unlocks 9:30 Club Archive Featuring Over 100 Live Performances
From 2005 until 2017, NPR broadcast live performances from the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC. Now, in celebration of the venue’s 40th anniversary, that archive of over 100 performances is available for your streaming pleasure through NPR’s website. The fine folks at National Public Radio have put a tremendous amount of effort into this archive. Each individual concert has been published with its original write-up. Remember a time when “Conor Oberst has been called the voice of his generation”? Us neither, but apparently that happened when he was 24-years-old. In that sense, this isn’t just an abundance of fine performances, it’s also a collection of music criticism — sometimes hyperbolic, but always earnest — by hardworking people who love music.
