Big Slack Attack: Our 1994 Pavement Interview

This interview originally appeared in the April 1994 issue of SPIN. I’ve been coming up with lots of theories lately, for no special reason except maybe to kill time between episodes of the Larry Sanders Show. Here’s one: When I first heard Pavement‘s new album Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, I was convinced it was secretly an answer record to R.E. M.’s Reckoning (“Range Life” was “(Don’t Go Back To) Rockville,” “Cut Your Hair” was “Pretty Persuasion,” umm. . .). This isn’t as stupid an idea as you might think: Pavement contributed a song to the recent AIDS-benefit compilation No Alternative called “Unseen Power of the Picket Fence,” a paean to the Athens, Georgia, combo, and specifically to Reckoning (from which we learn that “Time After Time (annElise)” was singer-guitarist Stephen Malkmus’s...

Watch Pavement Play Tennis Against Tim Heidecker, DJ Douggpound

Pavement‘s 2022 reunion tour hardly needs much promotion, as many shows are sold out months in advance. But the indie rock icons were recently up for a fun stunt, as group members Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich played tennis against comedian/musician Tim Heidecker and his Office Hours Live podcast cohort, DJ Douggpound. The match has been recapped in a SportsCenter-style video with narration from legendary musician John Lurie, also the host of the HBO series Painting With John. We won’t provide spoilers, but let’s just say Malkmus is both the best singer and athlete on the court during this particular contest and that Heidecker’s notoriously short-fuse is easily triggered by competition. Pavement Dusts Off ‘90s Rarities at L.A. Reunion Tour Warm-Up

Pavement certainly made up for lost time last night (May 23) at Los Angeles’ Fonda Theatre during its first show since Nov. 22, 2010, playing a 30-song, 120-minute set packed with music the beloved indie band hadn’t performed since the 1990s. In fact, 11 of the songs were not played on Pavement’s prior reunion tour some 12 years ago, including “Fame Throwa” from 1992’s Slanted and Enchanted, which was dusted off for the first time since the year after its release. Other long-buried treasures that hadn’t been played since the Bill Clinton administration were “Serpentine Pad,” “Black Out” “Motion Suggests” from 1995’s Wowee Zowee and “Type Slowly,” “Transport Is Arranged” and “Embassy Row” from 1997’s Brighten the Corners. Pavement also played the non-album B-side “Harness Your Hopes” for th...

The Reissue Section – April 2022

Hey fellas, have ya heard the news? CDs are back! If Rolling Stone, Vice, The Guardian all said so, then it must be gospel, right? If you’re a reader of this section you’re well aware that we’ve always been advocates of the compact disc. Fads come and go, but a passion for owning the music you purchase lastss forever. And with that said, we give you our picks for the best archival titles of this first quarter of 2022. The LemonheadsIt’s A Shame About Ray: 30th Anniversary Edition (Fire Records) The Lemonheads hit 1992 like a beam of sunshine, piercing the dark veil of grunge with their fifth LP It’s A Shame About Ray. And where their early TAANG! Records whirlwinds felt like an expensive J. Crew sweater dragged across the floor of CBGB, Ray is that very shirt after being washed and worn by...

Pavement Marks 30 Years of Slanted & Enchanted With Reissue

Pavement is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the album that started it all, Slanted & Enchanted, which was released on this day 30 years ago on Matador. To celebrate, the band and label are reissuing vinyl and cassette pressing exclusives in honor of the anniversary. On August 12th, a limited-edition run of the original LP on red, white and black splatter vinyl will be available for purchase. There will also be a cassette tape called Courting Shutdown Offers, which is a replica of the tape Pavement used to pitch Slanted & Enchanted to labels. Pavement Unveil New Video for ‘Harness Your Hopes’

Pavement released a new video for their 1999 B-side, and the improbable 2022 viral TikTok hit, “Harness Your Hopes.” [embedded content][embedded content] The Alex Ross Perry-directed video stars Sophie Thatcher. Perry takes Pavement fans through a mini-history of the band on film, placing Thatcher in some of Pavement’s classic music videos. The track was initially released on the CD version of Spit on a Stranger EP back in 1999, which was also the year they disbanded. A reissue of the EP will release as a 12″ on April 8, the same day as the band’s massive Terror Twilight: Farewell Horizontal 45-track exclusive box set. Pavement is finally hitting the road this fall throughout Europe and North America. Tickets are available on the band’s website. Matador, 2022 Spit on a Stran...

Pavement‘s fifth and final album is getting the reissue we have all been waiting for. On April 8, Matador is set to release Terror Twilight: Farewell Horizontal, a reissued collection of the original record from 1999. The 45-track set compilation includes a remastering of the original album, B-sides, home demos, rehearsal tapes, live recordings, and even tracks from the band’s scrapped session at Sonic Youth’s Echo Canyon studio. The entire collection presents 28 unreleased tracks, and today, Pavement released one of the never-before-heard tracks, “Be The Hook.” [embedded content][embedded content] The LP will restore Terror‘s producer Nigel Goodrich (Radiohead, Beck) suggested sequence, yet the new CD will preserve the final track order lined up by Pavement. The 4xLP and 2xCD ed...

The 90 Greatest Albums of the ’90s

This article originally appeared in the September 1999 issue of SPIN. “You must be high.” We heard that a lot during the time we spent preparing this issue. Which is understandable. Pronouncing the 90 greatest albums of the ’90s is a somewhat presumptuous thing to do. When you’re measuring the music this decade is offering to history—the sounds we partied with, copulated to, fought about, and wept over—everyone has an opinion. That ours should be more valid than yours is debatable. But hey—it’s our magazine. What, then, you ask, constitutes “greatest”? Don’t even start. Suffice it to say that, after much heated discussion and countless veiled insults, it came down to the factors of both remarkable artistry and cultural shock value. Sometimes a record’s knock-you-off-your-Skechers impa...

Pavement Adds North American Dates for 2022 Tour

Pavement is set to tour after a 10-year hiatus from the road, and just announced they are adding stops throughout North America on their 2022 world tour. Tickets for their U.S. and Canada jaunt go on sale Friday, November 5 on the band’s website. Having disbanded in 1999, Pavement first returned to the stage in 2010 with four sold-out shows in New York’s Central Park. The upcoming shows are their first headlining performances since their appearances at Coachella, Primavera Sound, and Pitchfork Music Festival over a decade ago. This September, the alt-rockers announced the fall run of their tour throughout Europe, which will follow the North America stint, after their final performance in the U.S. at ACL Live at Moody Theater in Austin, Texas. At the beginning of next summer, Pavement is se...

Pavement to Reunite for First Tour in 10 Years

Back in 2010, Pavement announced the first string of shows since their breakup in 1999, mentioning the tour “was not a prelude to additional jaunts and/or a permanent reunion.” Surprise! The Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain composers will also headline ES Primavera Sound Barcelona & Porto 2022. The UK tour includes a four-night residency at the Roundhouse in London. Tickets for the UK dates go on sale September 11 at 10 a.m. BST, and European tickets go on sale September 10 at 10 a.m. BST. Fans can purchase tickets on the band’s website.
