Jose Mourinho v Pep Guardiola: the best meetings between the two

Jose Mourinho v Pep Guardiola: the best meetings between the two – originally posted on Sportslens.com Two of football’s most respected managers go head-to-head once again this weekend, as Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur welcome Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City to North London on Saturday. The pair are often very different in their methods: Mourinho is often more pragmatic on the pitch and vicious in his press conferences, while Guardiola’s sides often play with a highly entertaining style. The debate continues to roar on about who is better. The Portuguese has achieved incredible things but has also suffered a few failures here and there. Meanwhile, the former Barcelona man has won league titles everywhere he’s been, but has often done it with some of ...

Manchester City flight redirected ahead of West Ham clash

Manchester City’s flight to London had to be rerouted after a technical issue on the plane meant that they could not land at their scheduled destination. The first-team squad flew to the capital on Friday ahead of City’s lunchtime Premier League clash with West Ham United. But their flight had to redirected from City Airport to London Stansted more than 30 miles away. Goal reports that there was a problem with the plane’s anti-skid system which meant that it could not land at an airport with a short runway. The team suffered a slight delay ahead of travelling to the hotel before Saturday’s clash. It is understood that there was no fault on the part of the airport but the flight would not have needed to be rerouted had it been scheduled to land at a major airport. In 2016, a City team fligh...

Micah Richards slams Manchester City defenders after Leicester thrashing

Micah Richards has slammed the Manchester City defence for their performance in their hammering by Leicester, accusing them of being “reactive, rather than proactive”. City’s weaknesses at the back were ruthlessly exposed by the Foxes, who fought back from a goal down to claim a famous 5-2 victory. Jamie Vardy was the star performer, hitting a hat-trick, with further goals from James Maddison and Youri Tielemans sealing the win. It is the first time a team managed by Pep Guardiola has shipped five goals and the first time City have conceded five goals at home in 17 years. It is not, however, the first time the team’s defence has been questioned, with a shaky back line one of the reasons why City failed to mount a sustained defence of their title last season. Richards certainly didn’t hold ...

Manchester City name new captain after Silva departure

Getty Images Fernandinho will be Manchester City’s captain for the 2020-21 season, manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed. David Silva took the armband after the departure of long-serving skipper Vincent Kompany last season before the Spain playmaker opted to call time on his decade-long stay at the Etihad Stadium. It means the responsibility will now be passed to Fernandinho, another stalwart of City’s modern era, after the 35-year-old was voted captain by his team-mates and other members of staff. “He will be good [as a leader], as he always has been since I met him,” Guardiola said of the Brazil international who joined City from Shakhtar Donetsk for £30million in 2013 and is out of contract next June. “It doesn’t matter [whether or not Fernandinho has] the armband, he is always a guy who ...

Alexandre Lacazette pledges future to Arsenal amid Juventus links

Alexandre Lacazette has said that he has no intention of departing Arsenal while the club has an exciting future under boss Mikel Arteta. After taking over from Unai Emery midway through the 2019-20 campaign, Pep Guardiola’s former assistant at Manchester City has led the Gunners to FA Cup and Community Shield glory. While there has previously been speculation about the future of their France international forward, he has been happy to decisively push that to one side. “I’m at Arsenal. I signed a five-year contract to improve and win titles. I’ve got two years left and I’m determined to stay,” he said to L’Equipe. When asked if that is his final decision, he replied: “From me, yes.” Meanwhile, the 29-year-old has insisted that he knows nothing about links to the likes of Juventus and Atlet...

Gary Neville: I hope Lionel Messi doesn’t do very well for Manchester City

Gary Neville cannot see his former employers at Manchester United joining the race for Lionel Messi and hopes the mercurial Argentine “doesn’t do very well” if he ends up leaving Barcelona for Manchester City. A switch to England continues to be mooted for the six-time Ballon d’Or winner. Messi has informed those at Camp Nou of his desire to move on, with further talks set to be held with the Liga club’s board as he mulls over his options during a period of personal frustration. Neville believes a compromise will be reached that keeps the South American in Catalunya, with an all-time great merely “flexing his muscles” and sending warning signals to the Blaugrana. If a stunning switch were to be made, though, then the ex-United defender concedes that the Ethiad Stadium – alongside one-time ...

Manchester City, Inter Milan favourites to sign Lionel Messi

Manchester City and Inter are considered the favourites to sign Lionel Messi, according to The Independent. The 33-year-old shocked the world of football when he outlined his intention to leave Barcelona after 20 years at the club on Tuesday. There is confidence within Messi’s camp that the clause in his contract that would allow the Argentine to leave Barça for free will be triggered. However, the Catalans believe that clause has expired and will demand a transfer fee of around €700m for Messi. Manchester City are believed to be working on structuring a deal and the report states that a reunion with Pep Guardiola seems to be the most likely option if Messi does end up leaving the Camp Nou. Guardiola is believed to have been in contact with Messi in recent weeks to discuss a potential move...

Lionel Messi makes contact with Pep Guardiola over Manchester City move

Lionel Messi has reportedly already been in touch with Pep Guardiola over a possible switch from Barcelona to Manchester City this summer. City are among the contenders to sign the 33-year-old after he allegedly handed in a formal transfer request on Tuesday. The Argentina international enjoyed illustrious success playing under Guardiola at Barca between 2008 and 2012, winning four of his six Ballons d’Or during that period. According to Radio Catalunya, Messi has been in touch with the Catalan coach about reuniting at the Etihad Stadium in the coming weeks. Messi’s contract stipulated that he could leave on a free transfer this summer, but Barca insist that clause expired in June and it may now be a case of City waiting 12 more months. Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain are also be...

Manchester City targeting Mauricio Pochettino to replace Pep Guardiola

Manchester City are targeting Mauricio Pochettino as their next manager if Pep Guardiola fails to agree new deal, claims The Sun. Gaurdiola’s long-term future at the Etihad is in some doubt with the Spaniard yet to commit beyond next season. City are big fans of Pochettino with the former Tottenham boss keen to coach again in England. But Poch knows Guardiola, reeling from Saturday’s Champions League exit to Lyon, has just ten months left on his contract. So far Guardiola has not committed to staying beyond next summer, which could soon leave City in limbo. The club hierarchy would ideally like him to extend his deal and continue – despite another Euro failure. His close friends at City – chief exec Ferran Soriano and director of football Txiki Begiristain – are keen for him to stay on. Bu...

Kevin de Bruyne ‘assist’ blows up Twitter as Belgian equals Thierry Henry’s record

The video of Kevin De Bruyne’s supposed assist against Arsenal has gone viral after the Manchester City superstar equaled Thierry Henry’s Premier League record. De Bruyne finished the 2019/20 Premier League campaign with an impressive 20 assists to his name. He equaled Henry’s long-time record, but the Belgium maestro believes he was robbed of an assist earlier in the season at the Emirates. City beat Arsenal 3-0 with Raheem Sterling opening the scoring courtesy of a ball from De Bruyne who wasn’t officially attributed with the assist. After going level with Henry on Sunday, a City fan suggested the 29-year-old should appeal to become the new assist leader. “KDB needs to appeal for this and get the record,” the social media account wrote, accompanied with footage of De Bruyne’s non-assist ...

Pep Guardiola: Manchester City deserve an apology

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said his team deserved an apology, after their two-year UEFA ban from European football was overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) — a verdict he called “a good day for football”. Guardiola said the club’s reputation had been damaged by the furore around allegations that they broke Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules and fired back at comments from rival managers Jose Mourinho and Juergen Klopp. Mourinho had described the CAS decision to fine City 10 million euros ($11.39 million) for non-cooperation with the investigation as “disgraceful”. “Maybe. The thing about the money, maybe. But Jose and all the managers should know that we were damaged. We should be apologised (to). Because, like I said many times, if we did something wrong, we will...
