Pharrell Williams Joins Virginia Governor to Announce Juneteenth as State Holiday

Pharrell Williams joined Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam at a press conference in Richmond to announce the state’s intention to adapt Juneteenth into a state holiday. Protests in Richmond have put pressure on the city to remove a number of its Confederate statues in recent weeks. Juneteenth, which is June 19, is recognized as the date of the emancipation of the last remaining enslaved African Americans in the Confederacy in 1865 and was two-and-a-half years after President Abraham Lincoln first issued the Emancipation Proclamation. “From this moment on, when you look up at the vastness of the night sky and you see stars moving up there, know that those stars are our African ancestors dancing. They’re dancing in celebration because their lives are finally being recognized,” he sa...

Run the Jewels’ RTJ4 Is Driving Music for a Cop Car on Fire

Run the Jewels don’t make a reviewer’s job easy because everything that’s great about them is the stuff we’re supposed to ignore to get to the bottom of the hype. They began as the best kind of “supergroup”: An unlikely pairing of beloved talents who still had plenty of room to peak higher. El-P’s fantastic Fantastic Damage and his countless innovative productions for his own previous, self-built Def Jux universe (Cannibal Ox’s The Cold Vein, Mr. Lif’s I Phantom) were unmistakably the most futuristic squelches in dusty-crate-obsessed indie-rap. Jaime Meline set the stage for dystopian soundscapes in hip-hop more than a decade before Death Grips, Yeezus, or the “mutant” scene that’s spawned Black Dresses and Deli Girls. Then you’ve got Michael Render, d/b/a Killer Mike, a firebrand of an MC...

deadmau5 Drops New Single with Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo’s The Neptunes, “Pomegranate”

Only two days after announcing his new collaboration with The Neptunes, deadmau5 unveiled the single today, which marks his first original release of 2020. “Pomegranate,” released via deadmau5’s mau5trap imprint, explores the funkier side of the celebrated electronic producer, who teamed up with the Grammy Award-winning duo (comprised of Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo) for a pre-summer bop bursting at the steams with foot-tapping nu-disco flair. “Pomegranate” holds all the gravitas of a technically pristine deadmau5 record while brilliantly interweaving the velvety, electro-pop-inspired sonic verve of The Neptunes. “Pomegranate” was recorded back in December 2019 in North Miami’s Criteria Recording Studios during Art Basel, whe...

deadmau5 Reveals Upcoming Collaboration with Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo’s The Neptunes

A cryptic teaser from Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo‘s production project The Neptunes was shared on Saturday, leaving fans scrambling to figure out what the duo is up to. All was uncovered this morning, as deadmau5 shared an image of a mau5head made out of pomegranate, revealing that he would be joining them on a new track named after the fruit.  Unfortunately, nothing else was revealed about the new song other than the title and that it will be released on deadmau5’s label, mau5trap. Although the masked EDM sensation has not worked with the Grammy-winning production duo in the past, back in 2013 he was joined by Williams for an episode of his “Coffee Run” interview series. At the time of writing, neither deadmau5 nor The Neptunes hav...
