Wren Graves’ Favorite Songs of the Last 15 Years

It’s Consequence’s 15th anniversary, and all September long we’ll be publishing retrospective pieces informed by our publication’s own history — and the entertainment landscape in general. Today, News Editor Wren Graves runs down his favorite tracks of the last 15 years. A good song is a good song, but a favorite song is a moment in time: The number one track on a cross-country road trip; the first dance at a wedding; the long hospital playlist that still didn’t cover 19 hours in labor. I’ve changed a lot over the last 15 years, and music has been there every step of the way, melody and memory hand in hand. Critics sometimes put on a mask of objectivity, but I can’t pretend that this collection of songs has anything to do with words like “greatest” or “best.” As someone who lives thei...

Simon Cowell Tried to Take “…Baby One More Time” from Britney Spears by Offering Max Martin a Mercedes

Simon Cowell has clearly made a name for himself in the world of pop music, but he hasn’t always gotten everything he’s wanted. In a recent interview, the record executive revealed that he tried to score “…Baby One More Time” for a boyband he had signed, but songwriter Max Martin had already promised to give the song to Britney Spears and said no. Cowell was speaking on his America’s Got Talent co-star Howie Mandel’s podcast when he explained his “…Baby One More Time” connection. At the time, he was working with a boyband called 5ive, and they were “just on the verge of breaking them in America.” Someone played Cowell the song — which he said was actually first written for TLC, not Britney — and he said, “My God, I’ve got to have this song.” “So I phoned up Max,” Cowell continued...

Simon Cowell Tried to Grab ‘…Baby One More Time’ From Britney Spears By Offering Max Martin a Mercedes

What kind of world would it be if Britney Spears‘ debut single wasn’t “… Baby One More Time?” That impossible-to-image parallel universe would have become a reality if Simon Cowell had had his way. In an interview with the British music mogul/reality singing judge on the latest episode of his America’s Got Talent co-star Howie Mandel’s Howie Mandel Does Stuff podcast, Cowell revealed that he once offered the song’s producer/writer Max Martin a brand-new Mercedes for the track. But I also just been busy,” she adds. “We were in New Zealand and we went on a bike ride… I’ve been I’ve been ...

Michelle Branch and Patrick Carney Call Off Divorce: Report

Michelle Branch filed for divorce from Patrick Carney earlier this summer, but the two aren’t parting ways just yet. As Page Six reports, the couple recently filed an order of reconciliation. Branch and Carney paused their divorce for six months, during which time they “may participate in counseling services to effectuate reconciliation and/or may resume living together as husband and wife,” court documents state. After six months, the couple will decide whether to reinstitute the divorce proceedings or dismiss them for good. Branch and Carney got married in 2019 after several years of dating and share two children. Before confirming their split in a statement to People, Branch tweeted — and deleted — the revelation that Carney cheated on her. Soon after, news broke that she had been arres...

Lorde’s Younger Sister Indy Yelich Previews Debut Single “Threads”: Watch

Indy Yelich, younger sister of pop star Lorde, is set to enter the music industry with her debut single, “Threads.” The 23-year-old has previewed her new song on Instagram with a note that the full version is coming “soon.” The video on Instagram presents the song as an acoustic piano ballad, though TMZ also has a clip of the track as an uptempo EDM-inflected pop anthem. “Love you the same but I’m afraid that you’ll let me/ Rip out the threads we wove together, and it scares me,” Yelich sings. If her nose and eyes didn’t do it, her breathy voice lays bare the family resemblance. Yelich hasn’t yet revealed any other musical aspirations, though considering the polished production on the recorded version of “Threads,” it would be a surprise if she didn’t announce an album sometime s...
