Not only is Billie Eilish one of the most popular songwriters out there today, she might be one of the most logophilic, too. According to a recent study by the experts at WordTips, the 19-year-old pop iconoclast has the biggest vocabulary — in her music, at least — of any contemporary pop artist. Apparently, Eilish’s songs use, on average, 169 unique words out of 1,000. By contrast, Trey Songz and Carly Rae Jepsen are listed at the bottom of the artists studied, with 66 and 69 unique words per 1,000, respectively. When compared with musical legends, Eilish’s word diversity puts her ahead of all-time greats like Hank Williams and Bonnie Raitt, and not far behind the likes of Jim Morrison, Björk, and the list’s top artist, Patti Smith. Some other wordy modern pop stars who made the list incl...
“I was always optimistic,” John Branca, the entertainment attorney who worked with Jackson through many of his biggest triumphs and now serves as co-executor of his estate, told The Associated Press in an interview at his Beverly Hills home. “Michael inspired the planet and his music still does. There was never any doubt about that.” The optimism was warranted. A succession of court decisions came. One accusers’ lawsuit was dismissed in October. The other was tossed out in April. In May, a ruling in the tax case slashed the bill dramatically. The estate suddenly stands nearly clear of a dozen years of disputes. That means Branca expects that in the next 18 months it can finally be taken out of probate court and turned into a trust for Jackson’s three children, who are all now adults. And t...
Khalid and Gracie Abrams were among the other artists and friends who were also photographed with Eilish, all showing support for her on release night. All guests were required to take a rapid COVID-19 test at the Beverly Hilton Hotel before being given the party’s address, Variety reported. Before posting her photos with friends, Eilish uploaded images of herself posing in front of Happier Than Ever backdrops. Happier Than Ever, her sophomore album, dropped on July 30. Check out Eilish’s moment with Rodrigo in the Instagram photo set here, and see other pictures of Eilish from Friday night here and here. The thing about comets is that they were initially perceived as disturbances to our earth’s atmosphere; an anomaly, an intrusion. It wasn’t until Edmond Halley predicted the trajectory of a comet, accurately calculating its return, that people started to accept comets as something out of our reach, circling beyond the moon. Halley’s Comet was immortalized. The halfway mark of Billie Eilish’s sophomore album, Happier Than Ever, is a track called “Halley’s Comet.” It’s melancholy and yearning, but it acts as an appropriate connector between the first and second halves of the album — as well as the gap between her first album (the lauded, Grammy history-making When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?) and her latest effort. With this collection, she proves that she was not just a shot in the ...
The song’s verses remember those “best four years” — little Ronan’s bare feet, his laugh, his blue eyes, his dancing before bedtime, his race cars and plastic dinosaurs on the kitchen floor — and the unimaginable: “Flowers pile up in the worst way, no one knows what to say/ About a beautiful boy who died.” Ronan died from neuroblastoma in 2011. It was a one-off record, available only on iTunes at the time, and Swift mostly made it through an (understandably emotional) televised performance of it for 2012’s Stand Up to Cancer telethon, with Ronan’s sweet face behind her on the stage. Swift recently emailed Maya Thompson to ask her how she would feel about their song finding a home on the updated version of Red, which she previously...
Opening night headliner Miley Cyrus perhaps said it best when she referenced a lyric from “Malibu” — “Hoping I just stay the same and nothing will change” — after performing the track. “The reason why that wish is outlandish and ridiculous is because everything will change — it’s inevitable,” she told the densely packed crowd at the south end of Grant Park. “And I think it was a very humbling experience for all of us to be humanized together and experience the last year and a half, where we were all experiencing the pain of being disconnected, and I think we remembered the value of having one another in our lives. And I think the masks reminded us how much a stranger’s smile could really mean to us, because sometimes, we take that s— for granted.” The star continued to sh...
Our new music feature Origins gives artists the opportunity to share unique insights into the creative process behind their most recent release. Today, UPSAHL talks us through her latest single “Time of My Life” and breaks down its accompanying visuals. Taylor Upsahl, known professionally as UPSAHL, has been releasing music since she was just 14 years old. Now 22, she’s unleashing one bold single after another — 2021 has already seen her drop the badass tracks “Douchebag” and “Melatonin” — and today (July 30th), she’s debuting the music video for “Time of My Life.” On “Time of My Life,” UPSAHL explores the hardships of being a young adult. Lyrically, the song apparently takes place on her 22nd birthday, recalling Taylor Swift’s feel-good hit “22.” But unlike Swift’s sugary-sweet ode to you...
As Lollapalooza celebrates its 30th anniversary, long gone are the lineups of yesteryears packed with names like Temple of the Dog, Pixies, and Billy Idol. Leave it to Miley Cyrus, rock music’s cover song queen, to bring some of that music to Chicago’s Grant Park during her headlining set on Thursday evening. As Consequence News Editor Wren Graves noted in our day one coverage of Lollapalooza, “never cease with Miley Cyrus, who has matured alongside her audience and become one of the most exciting acts in music today.” Cyrus kicked off her Lolla set with a medley of “We Can’t Stop” and Pixies’ “Where Is My Mind?”. Just a few songs later, she brought out Billy Idol to perform their Plastic Hearts collaboration “Night Crawling” in addition to his own seminal hit, “White Wedding.” As the set ...
It’s taken him a few detours to get here, but at last, Jack Antonoff has released Take the Sadness Out of Saturday Night, his first new album as Bleachers in four years. The follow-up to 2017’s Gone Now features guest vocals from Lana Del Rey and Antonoff’s fellow Jersey boy, Bruce Springsteen. Take the Sadness Out of Saturday Night spans ten tracks, which include the singles “Chinatown,” “Secret Life,” “How Dare You Want More,” and “Stop Making This Hurt.” While Antonoff’s previous releases as Bleachers felt contemporary with a splash of ‘80s sheen, Saturday Night feels more clearly indebted to hits of yesteryear, taking obvious inspiration from The Boss and utilizing more orchestral and baroque-pop elements. Inspired by both a romantic breakup and, of course, the pandemic, the album carr...
MØ has released her latest single, “Kindness,” an anthemic dose of dance pop dedicated to her fans. Stream it below. The Danish singer co-wrote the new track with Ariel Rechtshaid, Jam City, and Yangze. Over string-driven production, MØ addresses coming out of isolation and darkness with lyrics like, “When I see you, I come into life/ Lying in your hands, baby, let you reach mine/ When you grab me, hands to the sky/ Carry me through the room.” In a statement, MØ explained how “Kindness” was made. “I wrote it at a time when I was feeling, like a lot of people, disconnected from the physical world,” she recalled. “I wrote the first demo in Copenhagen on a beat by my friend Yangze. Ariel Rechtshaid then joined the process and, working online and across time zones, we made this song take ...
