World-renowned electronic music producer deadmau5 has teamed up with Lights for an anthemic single called “When The Summer Dies,” out now via mau5trap. When deadmau5 and Lights first teamed up back in 2018 to release the midtempo track “Drama Free,” it was something of a perfect pairing. Longtime friends and collaborators, the two have since performed on numerous occasions, such as at the 2019 editions of Ultra Music Festival and Creamfields. Today, they have reunited to release an electro single reminiscent of some of deadmau5’s earlier music. “When The Summer Dies” showcases Lights’ signature pop-punk sensibilities, infused with a playful production from deadmau5. When announcing her sophomore LP, Sling, last month, Clairo shared a note admitting the album was inspired by her dog, Joanie, who made her consider themes of care, motherhood, and responsibility. These subjects all appear on the excellent late album cut “Reaper,” which features Lorde on backing vocals. Clairo ponders life with and without a child throughout the song, employing a gently-strummed acoustic and ethereal harmonies to create a comforting environment. Ho...
Slam remixes are a bit like the Rule 34 of the music world. If you can think of an IP, the internet has probably mashed it up with QCD’s ‘90s anthem. Cowboy Bebop? Slam. The Price Is Right? Slam. Space Jam?! Slam. It’s almost like the online community created an extended musical multiverse connecting Space Jam to every cultural touchstone in sight. Tracing the origins of the meme involves a labyrinthine journey through now-defunct forum posts dating back to 2005. Ian Kelly, a mashup artist known as Psynwav, happens to be qualified to further break down the broken links. “So ‘Space Jam’ first started with Randy Savage stuff,” the remixer says. The late wrestler offered the requisite flamboyance to carry the first wave of the fad. “It was mostly associated with Randy Savage because it was a ...

Just four years ago, Claire Cottrill was creating lo-fi bedroom pop on a simple keyboard. Then her now-certified-platinum song “Pretty Girl” went viral on YouTube, and the unexpectedly biting track cascaded into a breadth of opportunities for the young artist, who performs as Clairo. After dozens of festival shows, collaborations, and an EP, she released her excellent debut album Immunity in 2019 to widespread acclaim. Although many doubted Clairo’s ability to showcase a strong musical identity due to her age, background, and her viral moments, Immunity was an impressive and personal foray into her unique brand of indie pop. (It also sparked her first Billboard hit in “Sofia,” which enjoyed TikTok attention in the autumn of 2020.) Now, two years later, Clairo returns with Sling, an organic...
With her seven-piece band dressed in muted suits, the singer climbed up onto a mirrored riser as the song’s seductive chorus kicked in and the air filled with a swarm of bubbles. The Colbert visit was the debut performance of the song from the singer’s anticipated third effort, due out Aug. 20 on Republic Records. The track was co-written and co-produced by Lorde and frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff, with backing vocals on the recorded version from Phoebe Bridgers and Clairo. Earlier this week, Lorde said she was having a bit of culture shock returning to the “pop star world” after a few years out of the spotlight following the release and tour for 2017’s Melodrama. At the same time, she appears to be going full bore on getting back into the zone, teasing t...
The new album from singer-songwriter Clairo is here. Titled Sling, the 22-year-old singer-songwriter’s sophomore album was co-produced alongside in-demand studio wiz Jack Antonoff. The album sees Clairo build on the vulnerable, hushed indie-pop of her 2019 debut, Immunity. Press materials for Sling describe the record as an “exploration of mental health, unmet expectations, and the struggle to treat ourselves with gentleness and love,” with a lot of the subject matter inspired by Clairo’s newly-adopted dog, Joanie. “When I got Joanie, I started changing my routines and habits to healthier ones, to try to create an environment where she felt comfortable and happy,” Clairo said in a statement. “It made me realize I hadn’t been doing that for myself, and that I need to look at myself with the...
And the group was still hard at work on more new music: In June 2019, the members were in the studio with A$AP Rocky the day before he turned himself in to Swedish police following an alleged street brawl (and was subsequently held in detention for two months). Still, the group dragged its feet on releasing singles — it still felt the album was unfinished. Then, everything stopped. The COVID-19 pandemic struck — and the Swedes, in a way, got what they wanted: much more time to work on the music. “Now we laugh about the early ideas,” says Angello. “We’re like, ‘Holy s–t — we were supposed to put that out?’ ” The pandemic may have had some silver linings for artists, but the Swedes weren’t immune to its many downsides. Sweden never fully locked down and only recommended wearing ma...
This fall, Harry Styles will embark on a lengthy US tour in support of his latest album, Fine Line. Ahead of its launch date, the singer has made a number of adjustments to the tour’s itinerary. Due to COVID-19 restrictions varying by state, the “Fine Line Tour” kick off a month later than originally planned. The first date is now scheduled for September 4th in Las Vegas, Nevada. What’s more, because of global travel restrictions, Styles has had to pull the plug on all international tour dates at this time — and that includes Canada. On the plus side, Styles has added three new shows to the docket, including dates in Nashville (9/29), Uncasville (10/21), and Milwaukee (11/3). Plus, Jenny Lewis is still on board to serve as the tour’s opening act. Advertisement Related Video Check out the u...
It’s unclear whether Grande and Spears have ever met or interacted, though Grande did pay tribute to the pop legend by impersonating her signature vocals on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon back in 2015 and singing a snippet of Spears’ “Womanizer” on Snapchat that same year. In Spears’ Instagram caption Wednesday, Spears thanked her dedicated fans, writing, “You have no idea what it means to me be supported by such awesome fans !!!! The #FreeBritney movement has been pop culture canon for quite a while now, and it’s been cemented even further now that its namesake has finally utilized the hashtag on her own social media. Celebrating Wednesday’s court ruling that she can at last hire her own lawyer, Britney Spears shared a gleeful Instagram post expressing her gratitude with clips of herself horseback riding and doing cartwheels. Tacked on at the end of the caption was a cheeky “#FreeBritney.” “Coming along, folks … coming along,” Spears wrote, with a middle-finger emoji for good measure. “New with real representation today … I feel GRATITUDE and BLESSED !!!!
