Chelsea are yet to give a player the burden of their cursed no9 shirt for the coming season. We take a look at the players who have flopped while wearing the iconic number for the blues. Tony Cascarino Looking into the past Tony Cascarino was Chelsea’s first no.9 of the Premier League era and he really set this curse on its way. Serving only two seasons at the club Cascarino bagged a sad total of 6 goals in both combined and the closest he came to a trophy was runner up of the 1993/94 FA Cup. Mateja Kezman Moving ten years on from Cascarino’s departure Mateja Kezman joined for the 2004/05 season and although this was a successful season for Jose Mourinho’s blues, Kezman didn’t have the same fate. Arriving from PSV for £6.75m Kezman managed to only score four goals in 25 games which f...
You often hear the song “by far the greatest team, the world has ever seen” chiming around football stadiums across England, but we have decided to put that clout-chasing to the test by taking a comprehensive look at social media’s most popular Premier League teams. These incredible results show how far Man Utd still dominates as a Brand despite their on the pitch issues. For example, Man Utd has more than double the amount of social followers as their City rivals – despite the latter’s success over the last five years. It’s also interesting that the top 6 Premier League teams make up 88% of numbers, which reveals the enormous sway that the top 6 teams still have in the league. With Arsenal nearing the end of their pre-season tour of the United States, one thing that has become apparent is new signing Gabriel Jesus’ compatibility with fellow striker Eddie Nketiah. With the Brazilian joining as the Gunners’ marquee signing this summer, many fans would have assumed the £45m man would be leading the line come the start of next season. However, if Arsenal’s pre-season performances are any indicator of Mikel Arteta’s intentions for the upcoming campaign, we may well see a brand-new strike partnership being formed. While Jesus has been irresistible thus far after three games in an Arsenal shirt, fans have been quick to point out the blossoming on-field relationship between him and Eddie Nketiah, who the club recently tied down with a fresh long-term contract following ...
Have you ever wondered which famous names support your club? We have spent some time digging through a whole host of A-list celebrities who are known supporters of Arsenal – with so many to choose from, we’ve picked out our favourites below. The Queen While our monarch is notoriously tight-lipped over anything that involves her own desires or opinions, many people have speculated over the years as to who Queen Elizabeth II may be more inclined to in the football world. Indeed, she has never been spotted giving it large on the terraces of the Clock End at the Emirates Stadium with a Stella in hand, but she is thought to have had a soft-spot for Arsenal after inviting Arsene Wenger and the squad to an event at Buckingham Palace in 2007. It’s rumoured she was particularly impressed with ...
Wolves fell to a 2-1 defeat against Levante in a pre-season friendly on Thursday morning, but it wasn’t the result that stole the headlines after four red cards in the first-half. After two brawls in five minutes, Wolves had duo Yerson Mosquera and Daniel Podence sent off before half-time along with two other Levante players. Instead of leaving the second half as a 9-a-side game, referee Jorge Tarraga decided that they should resume with 11 players each in a strange decision that has baffled football fans around the world. Tarraga went one further and blew for the full-time whistle after just 86 minutes, as it appeared he’d had enough of the encounter and brought it to a close as Levante won 2-1 behind-closed-doors. This is crazy. Daniel Podence has been sent off now. He clashed with a Lev...
Chelsea fell to a disappointing defeat in a pre-season friendly against Charlotte FC on penalties, but it was Conor Gallagher’s horrendous miss from 12 yards that stole the headlines. After a successful loan spell at Crystal Palace last season, Gallagher earned himself a nomination for the PFA’s Young Player of the Year award which was eventually won by Manchester City’s Phil Foden. Chelsea supporters around the globe have been itching to see the newfound Conor Gallagher in royal blue, but were shocked with what they saw in Wednesday night’s penalty shootout in Charlotte. The 25-year-old Belgian scored the winning goal in the FA Cup final against Chelsea last year, marking Leicester’s first taste of silverware since their remarkable Premier League triumph in 2016. Bookmakers Paddy Power are set on the midfielder joining Arsenal before the transfer window shuts that they are offering odds as short as evens. After advanced talks over a return to West Ham broke down yesterday, Nottingham Forest are now said to be in the important stages of securing a deal for Jesse Lingard. The 29-year-old is available as a free agent after parting company with boyhood club Manchester United this summer, and a return to West Ham, where he spent six months on loan last season, looked to be the most likely destination. This has allowed Nottingham Forest to enter the mix, with the Tricky Reds prepared to offer the midfielder a substantial wage package in order to bring him to City Ground next season. Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of highly-rated England under-21 star Djed Spence from Middlesbrough on a five-year deal. Spence, 21, spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Nottingham Forest where he helped the Reds gain promotion to the Premier League for the first time since 1999 and became a bonafide starlet. The deal includes an initial guaranteed fee of £12.5m and an additional £7.5m in add-ons as Spence will likely slot straight into Antonio Conte’s starting line-up. He said: “To play in the Premier League and at a big club like Tottenham Hotspur is a dream come true. “I’m just thankful I’m here and I have this opportunity. Everyone wants to play in the Premier League. For a big club, Champions League football and with some of the best players, it’s a privilege to be here. ...
West Ham are close to securing two more summer signings with the club looking to bring in former loanee Jesse Lingard on a free, while they are also pushing hard in negotiations for Southampton’s Armando Broja. Just last week it seemed as though Chelsea were reluctant to let talented young forward Armando Broja leave on a permanent deal, with a possible loan deal the likeliest outcome for West Ham. It now seems the Hammers are closing in on a permanent transfer after they tabled a £30m proposal, which is believed to be enough to secure his services. The English-born striker, who represents Albania at international level, spent last season on loan at Southampton where he caught the attention of a whole host of England’s top clubs. With five goals in 15 appearances, including three in his la...
