Report: Newcastle and Celtic told to forget about appointing 60-year-old

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague says that Rafa Benitez will not be the next manager of Celtic or Newcastle United. Benitez left his role as boss of Chinese side Dalian Professional this week and was immediately linked with a return to British football. However, Balague has told the BBC that while there was interest from Celtic in securing Benitez’s services, he will not replace Neil Lennon. He also added that a return to St James’ Park is not on the cards while Mike Ashley retains ownership of the club. “Newcastle is not an option for Rafa Benitez under this owner,” said Balague. “Change the owner and then maybe. “Rafa has a huge respect for the fans, the club, the town. And I feel there is a bit of an unfinished business there.” SL View Given Benitez’s salary expectations, Ce...

‘Pay the money’, ‘No brainer’: Some Crystal Palace fans want 24-year-old winger signed

A section of Crystal Palace fans on Twitter have urged the club to land the signature of out-of-favour Leicester City winger Demarai Gray this month. Gray has dropped down the pecking order under manager Brendan Rodgers this term, making just two appearances in all competitions for the club. With under six months left on his contract, the Foxes are considering the 24-year-old’s sale this month and The Mail claims that he is valued at only £1.8 million. Palace are in the running to sign former Birmingham City graduate, but they face competition from Bundesliga heavyweights Bayer Leverkusen. A selection of Palace fans have reacted positively to the transfer speculation and believe it is a no-brainer for the club to sign Gray for the price quoted. Twitter Reactions: 24, ridiculously chea...

Leicester City, Everton enter the race to sign £75,000-a-week Premier League star

Leicester City and Everton have joined the race to sign Southampton striker Danny Ings at the end of the season, 90min reports. The England international has revived his career since his move to the Saints from Liverpool in 2019, registering 40 goals from 81 appearances in all competitions. His progress has also seen him return to the national team fold after a lengthy absence and there is now speculation whether he will stay with the Saints beyond the summer. The striker’s current deal with the south coast outfit expires in June next year and the club have yet to negotiate a fresh contract with the 28-year-old. While the Saints are reluctant to sell him this month, it is reported that they may be forced to consider his exit this summer, should they fail to extend his deal by then. Tottenh...

Cash-strapped Barcelona wants Sergio Aguero, David Alaba for free

Barcelona are hoping they can land Sergio Aguero and David Alaba on free transfers this summer after their contracts expire at Manchester City and Bayern Munich respectively. Aguero is expected to depart the Etihad Stadium after 10 years which have seen him become the club’s all-time top goal scorer with 256 goals and lift four Premier League titles in a glittering career. However, injuries have since caught up with the 32-year-old and he has now gone a full year without scoring a Premier League goal at the Etihad. According to Mundo Deportivo, Barca see the striker as the ideal No 9 replacement for Luis Suarez, who departed for Atletico Madrid in the summer, in providing a big name signing for supporters. Barca are in desperate financial struggles following the coronavirus outbreak, and t...

Chelsea manager needs a reality check – media have given him an easy ride – Opinion

Frank Lampard appears to have been taking lessons in diplomacy from Neil Lennon judging by his antics at his press briefing on Friday. Speaking ahead of the FA Cup tie against Luton Town, the Chelsea boss criticised the objectivity of journalist Liam Twomey from The Athletic. Lampard was asked a question by Twomey about the importance of having Petr Cech alongside in him during difficult times at Stamford Bridge. His answer had all the hallmarks of someone looking for any excuse to deflect attention from his team’s recent performances. “To be fair Liam, their confidence would be shot if they were to read some of the pieces you write at the minute,” said Lampard. “I read them and some of the confirmation bias that you reflect on after games – it’s almost like a social media pundit to try an...

‘He will certainly help us win a few games’: Newcastle boss eyeing return to form

Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce says that Allan Saint-Maximin’s return from injury could help to turn around the club’s fortunes. Saint-Maximin last played against Chelsea during November and Newcastle’s form has tailed off significantly since then. The 23-year-old has finally shaken off the effects of a calf injury and COVID-19 and will be in the squad for the Premier League game at Aston Villa on Saturday evening. Ahead of the trip to Villa Park, Bruce told Sky Sports that it was a major boost to have the Frenchman back in the fold. “Arguably our most creative player, the one who’s your player of the year, then of course you are going to miss him and we have missed him for the best part of a couple of months,” said Bruce. “When he was in and around the team, we looked a threat, we c...

Emmanuel Dennis transfer value crashes from €16 million

The value of Club Brugge winger Emmanuel Dennis on the transfer market has crashed from 16 million to 11 million Euros within five months. According to transfermarkt, Dennis was valued at 16 million Euros in August 2020. However, this price tag has tumbled to 11 million Euros now. This crash could well be blamed on the many controversies involving the player as well as his limited appearances for champions Club Brugge this season. His Belgian club had hoped to sell him for between 20 and 25 million Euros last summer. However, none of his interested suitors could match that asking price. The player himself revealed a transfer to Premier League club West Bromwich Albion fell through after he was not granted a work permit. Jordan Henderson: Liverpool were the ‘better team’ against Manchester United

Jordan Henderson felt Liverpool were the “better team” against Manchester United, but has admitted that his side have allowed their standards to slip in recent weeks. Liverpool welcomed United to Anfield on Sunday knowing that they could return to the top of the Premier League standings with a victory. However, confidence within the Reds’ camp wasn’t at its highest point after uninspired draws against West Brom and Newcastle and a dismal defeat away at Southampton, with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino all struggling for form in the final third. Unfortunately, the talismanic front three were quiet once again as Jurgen Klopp saw his team struggle to break down a well organised United outfit in a 0-0 draw. Liverpool had No.1 goalkeeper Alisson to thank for keeping them in the ga...
