Members of Pretenders, Rush, Queen, AC/DC, Police Shine at Taylor Hawkins Tribute

Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins was a rock’n’roll fanatic through and through, and many of his most formative influences assembled tonight (Sept. 3) at London’s Wembley Stadium in tribute to the artist, who died suddenly in March at age 50.The latter portion of the concert began with The Pretenders, a band Dave Grohl said he and Hawkins “shared a musical love for” and “spent many a night singing and dancing along to.” In The Pretenders’ first live performance since 2019, the Chrissie Hynde-led group, augmented by Grohl on bass, tore through “Precious,” “Tattooed Love Boys” and “Brass in Pocket.” “He loved me, but I loved him more,” Hynde said of Hawkins before the latter song. From there, the Joe Walsh-led James Gang played favorites such as “Funk #49” and “Walk Away” in its first live...

The Struts’ Luke Spiller Will Perform With Members of Queen at Taylor Hawkins Tributes

The Struts lead singer Luke Spiller will perform “a couple of Queen songs with Queen” at the upcoming Taylor Hawkins tribute concerts in London and Los Angeles, the artist told SPIN‘s Lipps Service podcast for an episode debuting Sept. 5. “I owe so much of where I am right now to him, from getting the opportunity to open up for the Foos … even coming to L.A., and sort of laying roots down here, which, again, was life-changing, and probably something that I wouldn’t have done if he hadn’t encouraged it,” Spiller said of Hawkins, who died suddenly in Bogota, Colombia, in March. “So I owe him a great amount, and I kind of still do, with these shows that are coming up. I still kind of find it a bit ludicrous that I’m even considered to be on that bill, considering the lineup,” he continued. “I...

Brian May Says Queen Would Be ‘Forced’ to Have Colored and Transgender Members If They Formed Today

Brian May has some thoughts about the world’s current cultural climate. During an interview with The Mirror, the Queen guitarist said the band probably wouldn’t fare well if it was just starting out during a time when everyone has “to be so calculating about everything.” “Freddie [Mercury] came from Zanzibar, he wasn’t British, he wasn’t white as such – nobody cares, nobody ever, ever discussed it,” May said. “He was a musician, he was our friend, he was our brother. We didn’t have to stop and think: ‘Ooh, now, should we work with him? Is he the right color? Is he the right sexual proclivity?’ None of that happened, and now I find it frightening that you have to be so calculating about everything.” He then took that thought one step further, adding:  “We would be forced to have p...

Watch Nandi Bushell Jam with Queen’s Roger Taylor

Nandi Bushell keeps living her absolute best life. Just days after sharing a tribute to Rolling Stones‘ late drummer Charlie Watts, the 11-year-old wunderkind posted footage of her and Queen‘s Roger Taylor jamming together. In the video, Bushell explained how she got into Queen after playing the drum part of “Bohemian Rhapsody” in a commercial at the age of 8. “To actually get to play with Mr. Taylor. Just wow!” she gushed. The pair played “Bohemian Rhapsody” together, but first they partook in a drum battle — where Taylor suffered the same fate as Dave Grohl,  throwing his drumsticks in defeat while declaring “I’m done! I give up!” Watch Nandi Bushell and Roger Taylor’s epic jam session below. About a month ago, Taylor shared a photo of him shaking Bushell’s hand on Instagram. “Fabul...

30 Overlooked 1991 Albums Turning 30 This Year

1991 was a transformative year for rock music, a time when alternative rock and heavy metal entered a new era of commercial dominance. Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden ushered in the explosion of Seattle grunge alongside blockbuster albums by Metallica, R.E.M. and Red Hot Chili Peppers, to say nothing of influential indie classics by My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream and Slint, or SPIN’s album of the year, Teenage Fanclub’s Bandwagonesque. But while 1991’s hits set the agenda for alternative rock for the rest of the decade, the year was brimming over with fascinating career footnotes and debuts from other promising new bands. In England, the music press was excitedly hyping up genres like shoegaze, baggy, and whatever “grebo” was, while American indie bands like fIREHOSE, the Meat Puppe...

The 50 Best Live Albums of the 1970s

The concert industry exploded in the 1970s, and the live album, a stopgap project once reserved for only the biggest artists, became a compulsory ritual and a pivotal moment for many artists. Live albums captured legendarily loud bands like The Who and The Ramones in their natural element. Once obscure regional acts like Bob Seger, KISS and Cheap Trick exploded into the mainstream with live albums. The Band, The Stooges, and Velvet Underground put their final gigs on vinyl. Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young (as his ongoing archive series shows), and Jackson Browne recorded entire sets of new songs onstage. The Grateful Dead released several official live albums (and continue to do so) that only made fans want to bootleg shows on their own more. With the 50th anniversary of a landmark live album, Th...

The show took place on the first day that California was officially reopened for vaccinated people. The 600-person capacity show was announced over the weekend. What Makes A Karaoke Song So Difficult?

Picture this: You’re riding the high of finally being in a crowded dive bar again. The drinks are flowing, possibly too much. You just heard someone absolutely nail “Sweet Caroline” on the karaoke stage. Now the DJ is calling for the next contestant. Your friends are egging you on. Your brain is saying no, definitely not, but the five (or was it six?) beers in you are saying yes, absolutely you got this. Stumbling up to the grinning DJ, you tell him to queue up “Where is the Love?” by Black Eyed Peas. A classic. You think: the crowd will love it… As soon as the first verse begins you realize you’ve made a grave mistake. The lyrics are flying by at a speed that isn’t suited for your inebriated state and you barely hold it together until the chorus. But thank God, the bar is joining you for ...

Prince Charles pays tribute to ‘my dear papa’ Philip for devoted service

Britain’s Prince Charles paid a personal tribute on Saturday to his “dear papa” Prince Philip, saying the royal family missed him emormously and that the 99-year-old would have been amazed at the touching reaction across the world to his death. Philip, the husband of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth who had been at her side throughout her record-breaking 69-year reign, died at Windsor Castle on Friday. “As you can imagine, my family and I miss my father enormously,” Charles, the couple’s eldest son and heir to the throne, said outside his Highgrove House home in west England. “My dear papa was a very special person who I think above all else would have been amazed by the reaction and the touching things that have been said about him and from that point of view we are, my family, deeply grateful f...
