Tarantino on No Michelle Yeoh in Kill Bill: “Who Would Believe Uma Thurman Could Kick Your Ass?”

Quentin Tarantino has been frank about finding inspiration for Uma Thurman’s character in Kill Bill from Michelle Yeoh’s performance in Jackie Chan’s 1992 comedy, Police Story 3. So why didn’t he cast Yeoh in his film? “I asked Quentin the same question,” Yeoh said in a new interview with Town & Country. “He’s very smart. He said, ‘Who would believe that Uma Thurman could kick your ass?’ ” While they’ve never worked together, Tarantino and Yeoh are friends, and she credits the director with convincing her to come out of retirement after her terrifying fall from a bridge on the set of 1996’s The Stunt Woman. She broke several vertebrae. “I thought I broke my back. I thought I was paralyzed,” she explained. Every breath was agony. Tarantino was in Hong ...

Every Quentin Tarantino Movie Ranked from Worst to Best

Welcome to Dissected, where we disassemble a band’s catalog, a director’s filmography, or some other critical pop-culture collection in the abstract. It’s exact science by way of a few beers. The time, we enter the quirky, warmhearted world of Wes Anderson. This article was originally published in 2018 and has been updated. It’s fun to look back at Quentin Tarantino’s trajectory over the course of 20-plus years helming films. Once hailed as the video store punk with a proclivity for pop culture, Tarantino was the darling of Sundance in 1992 and quickly made a name for himself. He was the motor-mouth with a subversive wit, killer soundtracks, and a love for comics, rockabilly, and creative uses of camp, and he spawned a whole lot of junky crime capers, not to mention a ton of snarky banter ...

RZA and Flatbush Zombies Drop New Song “Quentin Tarantino”: Stream

RZA and Flatbush Zombies are big Quentin Tarantino fans. Last week, the Wu-Tang MC teamed up with the hip-hop group for the Reservoir Dogs-inspired single “Plug Addicts,” and now, the artists are back with a song named after the director himself. Produced by RZA, Prince Paul, and Erick the Architect, “Quentin Tarantino” sees Flatbush Zombies rap over a slow, smoky guitar riff. Zombie Juice, Erick the Architect, and Meechy Darko blend references to characters real and imagined, noting, “Who killed Bill? They shot Kennedy/ Malcom layin’ dead, like how they gon’ level the playin’ field?” In the accompanying music video, directed by John Tashiro, RZA does his best Mr. Blonde while the Zombies roam Los Angeles in white suits. The rappers discussed the origin of “Quentin Tarantino” in a sta...

Miramax Sues Quentin Tarantino over Pulp Fiction NFTs

To paraphrase the Bible and one Bad Mother Fucker, the path of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish, the tyranny of evil men, and bizarre legal bullshit. As Deadline reports, Quentin Tarantino is trying to auction off Pulp Fiction NFTs, but the film’s distributor, Miramax, is hoping a new lawsuit will shoot that plan in the face. Tarantino launched his blockchain bombshell earlier this month, promising to auction off seven never-before-seen scenes, scans of the original script, and exclusive commentary offering “secrets about the film and its creator.” However, Miramax contends that all of that potentially valuable property is not his to sell. According to the lawsuit, Tarantino “granted and assigned nearly all of h...

Quentin Tarantino on Filming Women’s Feet: “That’s Just Good Direction”

Quentin Tarantino puts his interests on screen — a man of heart and sole, you might say. His predilection for feet is so famous that Brad Pitt joked about it at the SAG Awards, saying the filmmaker “has separated more women from their shoes than the TSA.” When he was asked about it in a new interview with GQ, the filmmaker reportedly sighed and said, “That’s just good direction.” As Tarantino explained, he shrugs off the criticism. “I don’t take it seriously. There’s a lot of feet in a lot of good directors’ movies.” Ever the historian, he also gave a brief discourse on directors going toe-to-toe with their interests. “Like, before me, the person foot fetishism was defined by was Luis Buñuel, another film director. And Hitchcock was accused of it and Sofia Coppola has been accuse...

Quentin Tarantino Won’t Give His Mother Even a “Penny” After Childhood Insult

If you’ve ever wondered why so many of Quentin Tarantino’s characters hold fast to deep-seated resentments, wonder no more. In a new interview on The Moment podcast, the Oscar-winning filmmaker confessed to a grudge he’d been holding since childhood, when he vowed to never give his mother so much as a penny after she insulted his early screenwriting. Via The Hollywood Reporter, Tarantino told host Brian Koppelman (Billions) that his mom had “a hard time about my scholastic non-abilities,” which irked her even more because the boy spent his time in class writing screenplays. “She was bitching at me about that,” Tarantino said, “and then, in the middle of her little tirade, she said, ‘Oh and by the way, this little writing career?’ — with the finger quotes — ‘this little ...

Tony Scott and Quentin Tarantino’s True Romance Getting 4K Restoration

In news that Tony Scott would have loved and Quentin Tarantino might hate, the movie they made together, 1993’s True Romance, is set to receive a 4K digital restoration. Via NME, the new version will be available on Blu-ray on July 19th. Starring Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette, True Romance follows an Elvis fanatic and a call girl after they fall in love, get married, and accidentally steal a fortune’s worth of cocaine. Scott directed from a script by Tarantino, and while it was regarded as a box office disappointment at the time, it has gone on to acquire a devoted following. The 4K restoration includes both the theatrical and director’s cut of the film, alongside commentary from Tarantino and Scott, as well as Slater and Arquette. Those discs come packaged with a d...

Quentin Tarantino Buys Vista Theatre in Los Angeles

While the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated cinema’s movement towards streaming services, Quentin Tarantino is investing in the theatrical experience. Via The Hollywood Reporter, the Oscar-winning filmmaker has now purchased the historic Vista Theatre on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, California. “I bought the Vista on Sunset,” Tarantino announced on the Armchair Expert podcast with Dax Shepard and Monica Padman. “We’ll probably open it up around Christmas time.” This is the second venue acquired by Tarantino, after he picked up the New Beverly Cinema in 2007. Quentin Tarantino Doubles Down on Plans to Retire After His Next Film

If you’ve been hoping that Quentin Tarantino still has a bunch of movies left in him, don’t hold your breath: the filmmaker has doubled down on his intent to retire after his next feature film. He confirmed this on a recent appearance on Real Time With Bill Maher to promote his new Once Upon a Time in Hollywood companion novel. “You’re too young to quit,” Maher told 58-year-old Tarantino. “You’re at the top of your game.” The director-screenwriter responded: “That’s why I want to quit! Because I know film history, and from here on end, directors do not get better. Tarantino continued: “Working for 30 years, doing as many movies as I’ve done — which isn’t as many as other people — but, that’s a long career. That’s a really long career, and I’ve given it everything I have.” Related Video As ...
