Record Store Day is back with a pair of events similar to last year’s rollout. Just like 2020, the list of artists putting out exclusive, limited releases is quite good. St. Vincent will cover Nine Inch Nails’ “Piggy” and Metallica’s “Sad But True” on a new seven-inch. U2’s “Fire” will receive a 40th-anniversary reissue with bonus tunes, Pearl Jam’s “Alive” will be issued on cassette and vinyl, Rage Against the Machine’s live album The Battle of Mexico City will come to vinyl for the first time and the Beastie Boys’ EP Aglio E Olio will be pressed up as well. Prince’s The Truth will be issued on vinyl, as will live albums from the Ramones, the Police and many, many more. Thurston Moore, Mark Lanegan, Real Estate and more are paying homage to Galaxie 500 with a new cover series. The new song project coincides and celebrates the vinyl reissue of their live LP, Copenhagen, for Record Store Day and the special release of a limited-edition Dogfish Head Galaxie 500 beer. The project has been curated by David Newgarden, WFMU radio director in the ’80s/’90s as well as longtime manager of Guided By Voices and Yoko Ono. Last year, Spoon revisited their most seminal tracks with the Everything Hits at Once compilation. Now, the indie rock greats are giving their entire catalog another look with a new archival reissue campaign called “Slay On Cue” The series will see Matador Records reissuing most of Spoon’s albums on vinyl and CD for the first time in years. In particular, the band’s Telephono debut and Soft Effects EP haven’t been available in individual physical formats since they were originally released in 1996 and 1997, respectively. Those two efforts will be repressed on July 24th, with the latter available in red and blue vinyl editions with silkscreen covers limited to 500 each (pre-order are now ongoing).
