Red Hot Chili Peppers Honored With Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

“Can’t stop / Addicted to the shindig” (“Can’t Stop” – Red Hot Chili Peppers) It was only 10:30 a.m. on a weekday but a party was in full swing in the heart of Hollywood Thursday morning when approximately 2,500 Red Hot Chili Peppers fans gathered to witness the seminal Los Angeles rock quartet and Rock & Roll Hall of Famers — Anthony Kiedis, Flea, John Frusciante, Chad Smith — receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Though it was an unusually cool and cloudy day in Los Angeles, the atmosphere preceding the ceremony, right outside Amoeba Music (where RHCP will play a free in-store show next week), was warm and bright, with the USC Trojan Marching Band adding to the festivities with a medley of Chili Peppers hits including “Otherside,” “Dani California” and “Under the Bridge.” (Cr...

Every Red Hot Chili Peppers Album, Ranked

Red Hot Chili Peppers have been one of the most consistently popular bands in the world for most of their 39 years together, but it hasn’t always been an easy ride. Frontman Anthony Kiedis and bassist Flea have been the only constants throughout the band’s history. Over the years, they’ve recorded albums with five different guitarists and three different drummers, whether lineup changes were prompted by the tragic death of co-founder Hillel Slovak or his successor John Frusciante passing the baton to Dave Navarro or Josh Klinghoffer. On April 1, Red Hot Chili Peppers are releasing their 12th studio album Unlimited Love, which reunites the band with Frusciante and the producer behind their most beloved albums, Rick Rubin. So let’s take a look at where the new album ranks among the L.A. band...

Red Hot Chili Peppers Unveil ‘These Are the Ways’ Video

Red Hot Chili Peppers have unveiled a video for the song “These Are the Ways” to coincide with the release of their new Rick Rubin-produced album, Unlimited Love, which is out now. The clip was directed by Malia James, known for her prior work with Green Day, Rita Ora and Niall Horan. In it, a group of young people are seen making out, gathering around a dining room table and then suddenly fleeing the police, while the Chili Peppers rock out with abandon. “These Are the Ways” follows prior singles “Black Summer,” “Poster Child” and “Not the One” from Unlimited Love, the Peppers’ first album with longtime guitarist John Frusciante since 2006’s Stadium Arcadium. Red Hot Chili Peppers Launch SiriusXM Station Ahead of New LP

The Red Hot Chili Peppers will join peers such as Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and the Grateful Dead with the April 1 launch of their own dedicated SiriusXM channel, “Whole Lotta Red Hot.” Broadcasting from channel 315, the station will kick off with the band’s track-by-track commentary about their new album, Unlimited Love, which arrives the same day. Later that day, the channel will feature a previously unaired 2006 concert from the Forum in Inglewood, California. And at some point in 2022, the Chili Peppers will play for the first time at Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater as part of SiriusXM’s Small Stage series. The show will be open only to SiriusXM subscribers and Pandora listeners, and will also be broadcast live on “Whole Lotta Red Hot.” Channel listeners can expect to hear ...

Red Hot Chili Peppers Release Latest Unlimited Love Song ‘Not the One’

The new Red Hot Chili Peppers album is out next Friday. As a final preview, the band shared “Not the One,” the third song to be released from Unlimited Love. Opening with spacey keys and slide guitar (presumably courtesy of John Frusciante), “Not the One” is unlike any Chili Peppers song released in recent years. It’s a tender, delicate ballad (and yes, they’ve released those before), but this one has a pretty linear pace. So far, the Chili Peppers have released the rollicking “Black Summer” and funk-laden “Poster Child” from Unlimited Love. The album sees the band reunite with Frusciante, who left the band for the second time in 2007. He was replaced by Josh Klinghoffer, who remained with the band until 2019. Klinghoffer went on to release several albums as Pluralone and currently to...

Out of Their Tree: Our 2006 Red Hot Chili Peppers Cover Story

This article was originally published in the May 2006 issue of SPIN. Two years ago, Red Hot Chili Peppers went to Europe to play in front of the largest crowds of their 20-plus-year career. After surviving numerous personnel changes, drug problems, erratic recordings, relationship dramas, and assorted crises that have broken up countless bands, the Peppers have released back-to-back multiplatinum albums–1999’s Californication and 2002’s By the Way. Against all odds, they had reached genuine superstar status and this jaunt saw them headlining three nights at London’s massive Hyde Park. But for Flea–from day one, the bass-playing yin to singer Anthony Kiedis’ yang–these looked like the last shows he would ever perform with the group. “To tell you the truth, I really didn’t think I’d be ...

Red Hot Chili Peppers Share Latest Single ‘Poster Child’

Red Hot Chili Peppers‘ first album in six years (and first with guitarist John Frusciante in 16 years) is out in less than a month. Today, the veteran rockers shared “Poster Child,” the second single from Unlimited Love, which sounds exactly what you’d expect a traditional mid-tempo Chili Peppers song to sound like. The Chili Peppers released “Black Summer” last month. [embedded content][embedded content] A little over two years after the band reunited with on-again, off-again guitarist Frusciante, for his third stint in the Chili Peppers. Red Hot Chili Peppers parted ways with Josh Klinghoffer, who was their guitarist for a decade, upon Frusciante’s return. Klinghoffer has since released several solo albums and tours with Pearl Jam. Unlimited Love also saw the band reunite with longt...

Red Hot Chili Peppers Release New Single ‘Black Summer’ From New Album Unlimited Love

Red Hot Chili Peppers are back. A little over two years after announcing they reunited with on-again, off-again guitarist John Frusciante, the alt-rock veterans unveiled their first new song since 2016 and there’s an album to boot. Their new single “Black Summer” after teasing the track on social media a few times in the past week. Recent rehearsal footage shows Flea and...

Red Hot Chili Peppers Tease… Something

Red Hot Chili Peppers are up to … something. The band posted a cryptic video across their socials this morning. Flea wrote: “Been nurturing the feral animal for quite a while, it’s about time to set her free.” If new music is on the way, it would be the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ first new material with guitarist John Frusciante since their 2006 album Stadium Arcadium. pic.twitter.com/oRxtGEMR2i — Red Hot ChiliPeppers (@ChiliPeppers) January 28, 2022 The Chili Peppers are currently on a massive global tour, which they teased late last year. The 90 Greatest Albums of the ’90s

This article originally appeared in the September 1999 issue of SPIN. “You must be high.” We heard that a lot during the time we spent preparing this issue. Which is understandable. Pronouncing the 90 greatest albums of the ’90s is a somewhat presumptuous thing to do. When you’re measuring the music this decade is offering to history—the sounds we partied with, copulated to, fought about, and wept over—everyone has an opinion. That ours should be more valid than yours is debatable. But hey—it’s our magazine. What, then, you ask, constitutes “greatest”? Don’t even start. Suffice it to say that, after much heated discussion and countless veiled insults, it came down to the factors of both remarkable artistry and cultural shock value. Sometimes a record’s knock-you-off-your-Skechers impa...
