Norton will star alongside returning lead Daniel Craig, who plays the Southern detective Benoit Blanc, and new addition Dave Bautista, who was revealed as a co-star earlier today. Netflix Lands Knives Out Sequels for $450 Million

Netflix has purchased the rights for two sequels to Rian Johnson’s 2019 murder mystery, Knives Out, for a cool $450 million, according to Variety. Johnson will write and direct both sequel movies, with Daniel Craig returning as Southern detective Benoit Blanc. According to Deadline, casting will begin immediately and the first movie will begin shooting on June 28th in Greece. One of the best films of 2019, the Oscar-nominated Knives Out raked in $311.4 million on a $40 million budget. An apparent bidding war between Netflix, Apple, and Amazon drastically drove the prices up for the sequels. The first Knives Out film is centered around the murder of late mystery novelist Harlan Thrombey, with his entire family falling under suspicion for the crime. Blanc attempts to crack the case...

Two years after making a smash hit whodunnit with some of the biggest names in Hollywood, Rian Johnson is ready to solve a different case. It turns out Natasha Lyonne is already onboard as a star and executive producer for the show, too. Right now, Poker Face will consist of 10 episodes. There’s no word yet on whether or not it will be a limited series or who else will star alongside the Russian Doll actress. What we do know is that this is Johnson’s first time writing a TV show, but not his first foray as a director on one. In the early 2010s, he was responsible for directing three episodes of Breaking Bad — including th...

The Lost Art of Summer Blockbuster Counterprogramming

Blockbuster Month is celebrating the true titans of the genre. In the weeks ahead, you’ll read through a variety of features digging deep into the greatest hits of Hollywood, from popcorn classics to underrated gems. Today, Josh Spiegel discusses the art of counterprogramming and whether studios can still pivot around major tentpoles and blockbusters. All movies are not created equal. For decades, the summer was the domain of the blockbuster: big-budget films with loads of action, special effects, and anchored by some kind of intellectual property. Sometimes, those films were able to boast A-List stars; other times, those films created A-List stars. (Will Smith was well-known for his music career and starring role on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, but Independence Day made him a star. The fo...

Christopher Nolan, Edgar Wright, Rian Johnson, and Karyn Kusama Surprise NYU Graduates Over Zoom
