A visual tribute to Watts on the stage’s four massive video walls kicked off the night before the band ripped right into on-point versions of “Street Fighting Man” and “It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll (But I Like It),” followed by what could be described as a heart-to-heart between the group’s longest-serving members and the audience, some of whom may have been caught unawares. “It’s great to be back playin’ a big stage, I tell ya,” said Mick Jagger, flanked by co-founder Keith Richards and longtime member Ronnie Wood. “This is the first show of our tour. It was really quite emotional seeing those pictures of Charlie up on the screen. This is the first tour that we’ve ever done without him so I think all the reacti...
Coldplay could’ve died as villains, but after 25 years in the game they’ve lived long enough to see themselves become the heroes. The onetime least-cool act in rock and roll are flourishing in an increasingly poptimistic world, and for the climate crisis fundraiser Global Citizen Live, they teamed up with Billie Eilish and FINNEAS, BTS, Camila Cabello, and Shawn Mendes. Coldplay enlisted Eilish and FINNEAS for the X&Y cut “Fix You.” Performing in front of a golden backdrop that set off her new ‘do, Eilish’s breathy vocals were a perfect complement to this softer song, while FINNEAS’ mic was turned so far down that it’s unclear whether he was singing backup or lip synching. As for the Bangtan Boys, they didn’t make it to New York in person, but they did film a cosmic vide...
Here are 14 things that changed — or didn’t — at Farm Aid 2021. Neil Young bowed out Citing his concerns with “the COVID pandemic surging,” Neil Young announced Aug. 18 that he would not join his fellow Farm Aid board members — Nelson, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews and Margo Price — at this year’s show, after playing every Farm Aid since it launched in 1985. “I don’t want to let anybody down, but still can’t shake the feeling that it might not be safe for everyone,” Young said in a statement. “While I respect Willie, John and Dave’s decisions to stick with it and play, I am not of the same mind. It is a tough call.” He added: “We will be back. There is much work to do together.” Proof of vaccination or COVID tests were required Farm Aid in mid-August announced...
Jack White performed a surprise concert at Third Man Records’ new London record store on Saturday night, marking his first full-length public gig in over two years. White initially played a seven-song set in the basement of the store before moving to a nearby balcony to rip through another five songs. The setlist included pulled from the catalogs of The White Stripes (“Hello Operator,” “Icky Thump,” “Seven Nation Army”), The Dead Weather (“I Cut Like a Buffalo”), The Raconteurs (“Steady, As She Goes”), and White’s own solo albums (“Sixteen Saltines,” “Lazaretto”). Prior to closing the rooftop portion of the gig with “Seven Nation Army,” White dedicated his performance of The White Stripes’ “We Are Going to Be Friends” to “all the neighbors we’re upsetting now.” Advertisement Related Video ...

In the revived complaint obtained by Billboard, lawyers for Jane Doe write that she cannot be exact about when her memories of assault were repressed, but that they were at least repressed by the time she traveled to Australia on July 3, 2011. The trip was roughly a week after the accuser claims Manson raped her after she came to his home to return his key and effectively end the relationship that began consensually in February 2011. The complaint adds that following the alleged assault, Manson allegedly threatened to kill Jane Doe, and said he would “bash her head in.” It goes on to claim that he stated he would “get away with it” because he was a “celebrity who had contacts with the police.” A spokesperson for Manson said the shock rocker h...
Thirty years ago today (September 24th), Nirvana changed the shape of rock to come with their magnum opus, Nevermind, which boasted one of the most iconic album covers of all time. The 1991 grunge landmark is getting an expansive reissue for the occasion, but Spencer Elden — who posed as the swimming naked baby that graces Nevermind‘s cover — wants to leave his genitalia out of the artwork. Last month, Elden sued Kurt Cobain’s estate, the surviving members of Nirvana, and other parties, accusing them of child exploitation. He claimed that his legal guardians didn’t formally consent to his image being used on the album cover. Legal experts have called the case “frivolous” and “offensive” to victims of child pornography. As part of the lawsuit, Elden requested that the image be rem...
Red Hot Chili Peppers have announced a 2022 world tour, their first trek since reuniting with guitarist John Frusciante in 2019. Frusciante returned to the RHCP fold after the band fired his replacement, Josh Klinghoffer, after 10 years and two albums. The classic lineup has since confirmed they’re working on their first record together since 2010’s Stadium Arcadium. The Frusciante-featuring RHCP were meant to play a number of festivals last year, but something got in the way of those plans. They did manage to squeeze in one show pre-pandemic: a small memorial concert honoring filmmaker Andrew Burkle. Drummer Chad Smith wasn’t present for that gig, however, and was replaced by Jane’s Addiction’s Stephen Perkins, which makes this upcoming trek the first time the reformed lineup wi...
As a lyricist, Cobain had no scruples in expressing his honest feelings in his songs. His words about the human condition, isolation, acceptance, mental health and addiction remain strong touchstones of solace and insight that seem to resonate even more so with the children of Gen X than the Xers themselves. If only Kurt had lived long enough to see how much of a difference he made in the lives of people not even born when Nevermind was released, there’s no doubt he would have been glowing with pride. But Jesus wanted him for a sunbeam instead. In honor of Nevermind‘s 30th anniversary, we spoke with a wide swath of modern artists who were only babies or not yet born yet when Nirvana changed the course of rock n’ roll on Sept. 24, 1991. So long as the youth remain restless...
