Song of the Week: Eddie Vedder Delivers a Faithful Cover of R.E.M.’s “Drive”

Song of the Week breaks down and talks about the song we just can’t get out of our head each week. Find these songs and more on our Spotify Top Songs playlist. For our favorite new songs from emerging artists, check out our Spotify New Sounds playlist. This week, Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder takes on R.E.M. for the new drama Flag Day. A flag is more than cloth and dye. A flag is a symbol — a vessel of fear or hope — weighed down and lifted up by the actions of everything done in its name. Some of that fickle glory has rubbed off on Sean Penn’s character in his new film Flag Day, a solemn drama getting mixed reviews. But in judging the cultural impact, we won’t just look at the script, or the acting, or the sometimes bizarre statements the leading man has made when he’s os...

9 Memorable Covers of Billie Eilish Songs

In August 2019, the 15-time Grammy champ offered her stripped-down take on Eilish’s debut song. In a video shared on Instagram, Keys sings emotionally while playing the piano, giving “Ocean Eyes” a soulful feel. A few months later, she covered the tune once more, this time recording it for Spotify’s Single Series. Vitamin String Quartet, “Bad Guy” There have been several notable covers of this Billboard Hot 100 hit, which spent 49 weeks on the chart. But one of the most memorable is VSQ’s take, which soundtracked a scene in the third episode of Bridgerton‘s steamy debut season. The quartet may have made the song suitable for a ballroom scene in a period romance series, but it also added to the fun with its bouncy strings, even sans vocals. Le...

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats Announce New Album The Future, Share Single “Survivor”: Stream

A new album from Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats is on the horizon: The Future, the soul-rock outfit’s first record since 2018’s Tearing at the Seams, is out November 5th via Stax Records. To share the news, Rateliff and company have offered a preview with the lead single “Survivor.” The Future was recorded at Rateliff’s studio just outside his home base of Denver, Colorado. “I look at the album overall as a big question,” the musician explained in a statement. “When I was writing the record we were in the middle of a pandemic and our future looked pretty bleak. I just continue to try to write from a place of hope. Then my own neurosis, and maybe being a Libra gets in the way, and I can’t make up my mind. There is this constant back and forth battle in me personally and I am sure...

Watch Eurovision Champs Maneskin Rock Billie Eilish’s ‘Bury a Friend’

Eurovision 2021 winners Måneskin know what it takes to rock a crowd. The Italian band proved their metal mettle recently when they performed their thrashy take on Billie Eilish’s 2019 song “Bury a Friend” at Belgium’s Ronquière Festival on Saturday (Aug. 14). The original tune — which they also played along with covers of songs by The Four Season, Harry Styles, The Killers and The Stooges the night before at the Rock For People festival in the Czech Republic — is a series of low key beats, squeaks and Eilish’s whispery vocals. In the hands of the Mån from Rome, it is transformed into a grungier, edgier rock tune with a ripping guitar solo. “What do you want from me?/ Why don’t you run from me?/ What are you wondering?/ Wh...

Longtime The Cure Bassist Simon Gallup Reportedly Quits Band: ‘Just Got Fed Up of Betrayal’

Gallup didn’t elaborate on what, if any, incident, precipitated his split, and at press time, it did not appear that frontman Smith had reacted. But as Variety pointed out, in 2019 Smith told the Irish Times that if the second longest-serving member of the group took leave, “it wouldn’t be called The Cure.” That same year, he also told the NME that their relationship was the key to the band’s success. “For me, the heart of the live band has always been Simon, and he’s always been my best friend,” Smith said. “It’s weird that over the years and the decades he’s often been overlooked. He doesn’t do interviews, he isn’t really out there and he doesn’t play the role of a foil to me in public, and yet he’s absolutely vital to what we do. We’ve had some difficu...

Billy Joel Performs “Iris” with Goo Goo Dolls’ John Rzeznik at Buffalo Concert: Stream

Billy Joel had a surprise for the crowd present at his show in Buffalo on Saturday night: an appearance by none other than the Goo Goo Dolls’ John Rzeznik. “Welcome to my hometown,” the frontman told Joel after being brought onstage at Orchard Park, NY’s Highmark Stadium to cheers from the assembled concertgoers. From there, he launched into his band’s biggest hit — 1998’s “Iris” — with some help from the legendary piano man on keys. “And all I can taste is this moment/ And all I can breathe is your life/ And sooner or later, it’s over/ I just don’t wanna miss you tonight/ And I don’t want the world to see me/ ‘Cause I don’t think that they’d understand/ When everything’s made to be broken/ I just want you to know who I am,” he wailed on the second verse and subsequent chorus as the crowd ...
