Willow Meets a Strange Figure in ‘Transparent Soul’ Video Featuring Travis Barker

Willow rocks out with Travis Barker in her new, official music video for “Transparent Soul.” The Blink-182 drummer is part of Willow’s band onstage in a dark, grungy club in the clip that was released on Friday (May 28). As they play the pop-punk song, a version of Willow winds her way through the crowd and runs into a mysterious (and terrifying) figure. In what she calls “one of my favorite parts of the music video,” Willow finds herself making an emotional connection with the figure when it follows her out of the club. LYELL Refuses to Wait for Prince Charming In ‘Potions’ Video: Watch It Here

“Performing is such a huge part of who I am,” she tells Billboard. “I’ve always connected with Dorothy and Alice [from The Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland] because they were in control of their own narrative. They weren’t waiting for fucking Prince Charming to come and save them.” LYELL’s own narrative caught the attention of producer JT Daly, who immediately saw a star in the making, and began working with the band in early 2020. “‘Potions’ really stood out to me,” he tells Billboard. “Screaming, ‘I’m losing my mind’ over and over after the last year we all had seemed really cathartic.” Check out the video for “Potions” below. The band formed in 2018 and first played together when former Dum Dum Girls singer Kristin Kontrol invited them to play some covers for a Girlschool LA showcase, after which they formed the band and began playing DIY gigs around their hometown, opening for punk legend Alice Bag and reunited riot grrrl band Bikini Kill in 2019 at the Hollywood Palladium. The quartet self-released their self-titled debut EP in December 2020 and had a cameo in Amy Poehler’s early 2021 coming-of-age comedy Moxie! Their May 4 40-minute set and interview at the Cypress Branch of the L.A. Public Library included “Racist, Sexist Boy,” as well original songs “Claudia Kishi” (for the 2020 Netflix short doc about the Japanese-American character from The Baby-Sitters Club), a tr...

Dave Grohl Goofs About, Tells Smelly Beatles Van Stories as ‘Tonight Show’ Co-Host

Soon after, Grohl gave us the new van-touring documentary What Drives Us, on The Coda Collection via Amazon Prime Video, and he’s behind the new Paramount+ series From Cradle to Stage, inspired by the book published by his mother, Virginia Hanlon Grohl. As if to prove he really is everywhere, all at once, Grohl co-hosted The Tonight Show on Monday night, alongside regular top-man Jimmy Fallon. Grohl has never been mistaken for a one-trick pony. He’s an all-rounder type who entered the Rock Hall on the first instance for his drumming, then on the second occasion for his guitarist swinging, singer/songwriter/frontman talents. For his late-night TV stint, he got multiple chances to show off his range. There were gags aplenty when Grohl delivered a joint opening monologue. “I’m rea...

Fierce All-Girl Teen Punk Band The Linda Lindas Fight Hate on Viral ‘Racist, Sexist Boy’

With their ebullient mix of Sleater-Kinney/Bikini Kill power and an obvious homage to punk gods the Ramones in their stage names, the mighty quartet have already made significant waves at a young age, opening for Best Coast and Bikini Kill since forming in 2018. Their Bandcamp page describes them as “half Asian / half Latinx. Two sisters, a cousin, and their close friend. The Linda Lindas channel the spirit of original punk, power pop, and new wave through today’s ears, eyes, and minds.” The two singles and EP for sale on the band’s page were produced and mixed by by Grammy-winning producer Carlos de la Garza (Paramore, Bad Religion), who also happens to be Mila’s dad. Together for three years, in an interview during the library set, they cited Paramore, ...

New Edition of ‘No Direction Home’ Celebrates Legacy of Bob Dylan – And Robert Shelton: Excerpt

For a few heady years in the Village, Shelton and Dylan were buddies; hanging out, often with their respective girlfriends—Suze Rotolo and Baez in Dylan’s case. The friendship did not prevent Shelton from being critical, in person and in print, sometimes to Dylan’s annoyance. But he was fairminded and he understood from the moment he first heard him perform at a Gerde’s hootenanny in June 1961 that Dylan mattered, that his was a talent like no other. His review led to a contract with Columbia Records. The biography he proposed over dinner on New Year’s Eve 1965 was never intended as a potboiler—but neither was it intended that it would take twenty years to write. Shelton talked to everyone—childhood friends from Hibbing, including Echo Helstrom and Bonnie Beecher, the real “Girl from the N...

We can proclaim with even more confidence — in fact, utter certainty — that no artist has left a more exalted or scrutinized collection of albums and songs behind. The albums ranked in the following pages are a rare breed in that many mark their times but also mark all times. So many songs that a generation of listeners once claimed as their own have now found their way into the ears of children and grandchildren and will continue doing so for a...

Maneskin Singer Agrees to Drug Test After Eurovision Cocaine Use Rumors

Eurovision confirmed that broken glass was found under the table in question, but announced David had offered to take the test, which is scheduled for Monday. In Italy, the drug claim didn’t mar the praise that poured in Sunday from the Italian establishment for the victory of the rather anti-establishment Maneskin, a glam rock band that got its start busking on Rome’s main shopping drag. Their win gave Italy a sorely needed boost after a dreadful year as one of the countries worst hit by the coronavirus and will bring next year’s competition back to the place where European song contests began. The band was the bookmakers’ favorite going into the Eurovision finale and sealed the win early Sunday with the highest popular vote in the enormously entertaining, and incredibly kitsch, annual so...

Dave Grohl to Co-Host ‘The Tonight Show’ Next Week

The Foo Fighters released their 10th studio album, Medicine at Midnight, in February, which topped all three of Billboard‘s rock albums charts: Top Rock Albums, Alternative Albums and Hard Rock Albums. The Foos plan to deliver that medicine straight to their fans during headlining gigs at Lollapalooza in July and BottleRock Napa Valley in September. Grohl captures the thrill of being on the road in the touring documentary he directed What Drives Us, which serves as his “love letter to every musician that has ever jumped in an old van with their friends and left it all behind for the simple reward of playing music.” The 52-year-old musician and his mother, Virginia, have also launched the six-part Paramount+ series Fro...
