Alan White, the longtime drummer for prog-rock legends Yes, has died at age 72. The veteran musician, who was also a member of John Lennon’s Plastic Ono Band, passed away on Thursday (May 26th) after a “brief illness,” according to a Facebook posting by his family. White joined Yes in 1972 and remained their drummer until his passing. He joined the band for their tour in support of 1972’s Close to the Edge, replacing original drummer Bill Bruford, and made his recording debut with the band on 1973’s Tales from Topographic Oceans. He played on a total of more than 40 studio and live albums released by Yes, including their most recent full-length studio effort, 2021’s The Quest (the band’s 22nd studio album). Prior to joining Yes, White was recruited by John Lennon to be part of the ex-Beatl...
In the year 1987, rock was top of the heap. The late Eddie Van Halen was still the king of the axe, U2 and The Edge were on top of the world. And Def Leppard’s Hysteria hit like a rocket. With Robert John “Mutt” Lange on production duties, the British heavy metal band found a new sound. It was a steam train, a rock ‘n’ roll juggernaut with sugar poured on it. The followup to their breakthrough Pyromania from 1983, Hysteria had it all. Here was a collection of pop songs on steroids, hits with more muscle than Gold’s Gym, a stick of musical dynamite that blew up everywhere. Over 1,000 musicians from 25 countries convened at Stade de France in Paris this past weekend for the latest staging of the Rockin’1000 concert. Initially launched as an elaborate plan to lure Foo Fighters to the small town of Cesena, Italy, Rockin’1000 has since evolved into a live celebration of rock music, in which hundreds of singers, guitarists, bassists, and drummers congregate in one single setting and rock the fuck out together. Due to the pandemic, Saturday marked the first staging of Rockin’1000 in nearly three years. With a crowd of 50,000 people looking on, the collective performed a 21-song set that included covers of The Who, Rage Against the Machine, Pink Floyd, The White Stripes, and Guns N’ Roses. Notably, Rockin’1000 also paid tribute to late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor H...

Mick Jagger says Harry Styles is a “superficial resemblance to my younger self” who “doesn’t have a voice like mine or move on stage like me.” The Rolling Stones’ frontman’s eyebrow-raising comments about Styles came in what was otherwise a mundane interview with The London Times designed to drum up publicity for the band’s upcoming 60th anniversary tour. Jagger prefaced his remarks by saying he likes Styles and the two have “an easy relationship.” But the pleasantries ended there, as Jagger proceeded to rattle off all the reasons why there’s no comparison between the two. Come on, I was much more androgynous,” Jagger said. “And he doesn’t have a voice like mine or move on stage like me; he just has a supe...

Pearl Jam’s Matt Cameron and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith say that recent comments they made regarding Taylor Hawkins’ state of mind prior to his passing were taken out of context. In a feature published by Rolling Stone on Monday, Cameron was quoted as saying that Hawkins felt “he couldn’t keep up” with the rigors of being a drummer in a prominent rock band. Cameron, a close friend and collaborator Hawkins’ for decades, reportedly told Rolling Stone that Hawkins had recently spoke to Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl about his role in the band. “He had a heart-to-heart with Dave and, yeah, he told me that he ‘couldn’t fucking do it anymore’ — those were his words,” Cameron was quoted as saying. “So I guess they did come to some understanding, but it just seems like the touring sc...
With drummer Matt Cameron still sidelined by COVID, Pearl Jam tapped an 18-year-old high school senior to fill in behind the kit. Kai Neukermans backed Pearl Jam for their performance of “Mind Your Manners,” from 2013’s Lightning Bolt, during the band’s concert at Oakland Arena on Saturday (May 14th). As Neukermans replayed to the San Fransisco Chronicle, he initially offered his services to Pearl Jam by texting Eddie Vedder’s daughter, Olivia. (The two had met previously at her father’s Ohana Fest). Neukermans, who drums in a band called Alive, was then asked to record video of himself drumming along to a Pearl Jam song, so he skipped school — including a statistics test — and headed to a nearby practice space. The next day, Neukermans found himself taking the stage to a crowd of nea...
