“Man, I’ve got to say I had a very joyous celebration,” RZA tells me, the day after his July 5th birthday. “COVID kept everybody away, so this was a great reason for all of us to gather and we gathered and we partied until the neighbors complained.” When asked how he likes being newly 52, he remarks that he “kind of stopped counting” sometime around age 40. “When I turned 40 years old, I was in China. I was preparing for the movie Man With the Iron Fists…” he says, of the 2012 film he directed, starred in and co-wrote with Eli Roth. “And I just looked at myself and was like, ‘You know what? I’m just me. This is me. This is the me I’m going to be,’ and so I’ve been that same guy since then. The only thing I can say that feels different is just the appreciation, joy or blessing of being able...
Name RZA Best known for The Fatal Flying Guillotine Carrier. Current city Los Angeles. Really want to be The holy city of Mecca. Excited about My new album “Saturday Afternoon Kung Fu Theater” with DJ Scratch, which will be dropping later this summer. My current music collection has a lot of Frank Sinatra and Playboi Carti. And a little bit of Curtis Mayfield and meditation music. Don’t judge me for All of the music from The Benny Hill Show. Preferred format Anyway to listen to music, I love and enjoy, but I’m home back east at the Wu Mansion, I like to listen to music on vinyl. The slight variation of speed, there’s something about the ebb and flow of it that makes me always feel alive. Source: Tim Mosenfelder / Getty RZA has certainly amassed a lengthy catalog over the past two decades and more, with a career that began before the global impact of The Wu-Tang Clan where he found fame. The Abbot of the Shaolin Swordsmen sold half of his classic catalog to Hipgnosis Records, joining other artists and producers by placing their catalog into the hands of the British music publishing company. Variety reports that RZA, born Robert Diggs, sold half of his copyright interest and writers share to Hipgnosis, which specializes in protecting and promoting the value of popular music as the industry pivots primarily towards the streaming market. Given that physical copies are largely niche items among collectors, monetizing music in the near future will have to find new pathways to su...
Source: GOOD HUMOR / Good Humor As the world continues to get woke we find that some of our fondest memories are now tarnished by the hand of bigotry. One producer is changing the narrative by adding his touch to it. For those not in the know, the instrumental jingle that is synonymous with ice cream trucks has some very hurtful origins. “Turkey in the Straw” was originally performed at minstrel shows by actors wearing blackface—specifically by a character named “Zip Coon.” It was then renamed “N*gger Love a Watermelon”—yes you read that correctly. While the RZA hasn’t made a big splash since his iconic battle versus DJ Premier he still has the magic touch when it comes to the arts. The Abbot has been enlisted by one of America’s most beloved brands to update a modern classic. Good Hu...
Raise your hand if you ever thought RZA would be writing a jingle for Good Humor ice cream. OK, you’re lying — put your hands down. The Wu-Tang Clan leader teamed with the ice cream company to create a new tune. The folk song it’s replacing, “Turkey in the Straw,” was adapted and played during the 1800s at minstrel shows. “Some songs using its same melody contained highly offensive, racist lyrics,” reads a statement on the ice cream giant’s site. “As we mark Good Humor’s 100th anniversary this year, we must acknowledge the history of the ice cream truck jingle, and take action to ensure ice cream trucks across the country continue to spread joy to everyone for the next 100 years,” the company continues. Good Humor noted that it will ask...
