For decades, Sammy Hagar’s raspy, soulful voice has been one of the most recognizable sounds in hard rock, from his early hits as a member of Montrose and a solo artist to his multi-platinum run as Van Halen’s frontman in the ‘80s and ‘90s. In recent decades, he’s built a successful brand out of his love of good drinks and good times. Santo is Sammy Hagar’s joint venture with his longtime friend celebrity chef Guy Fieri, who is widely known for making the most of life and not taking himself too seriously. Here’s a look back at some of the greatest songs from Hagar’s five decades of music, alongside recommendations of complementary cocktails featuring Santo Mezquila or Tequila. For the first time in ages, there were festivals all over the country. New Orleans Jazz Fest, Shaky Knees and Memphis’ Beale Street Music Festival. Foo Fighters were slated to headline Saturday night in Memphis and Sunday in New Orleans. but were replaced by Sammy Hagar and the Circle and Red Hot Chili Peppers, respectively. In memory of the late Taylor Hawkins, Hagar and his band covered “My Hero.” In a post on Instagram, Hagar explained how it all came together and explained the band’s initial apprehension about replacing the Foos. When we were asked by the promoter to fill in for the Foo Fighters at the Beale Street Music Festival, my first reaction was ‘No fucking way!’ We discussed it as a band, & we came up with ‘Why not! Let’s just go play music and you’re at a big ass Circle pa...
On this week’s episode of SPIN Presents Lipps Service, host Scott Lipps caught up with none other than former Van Halen singer Sammy Hagar. As usual, the gregarious singer didn’t hold back. In their conversation, they discuss all things Van Halen, including Hagar’s views on David Lee Roth, meeting Eddie Van Halen for the first time, his reconnecting with Van Halen, the Van Halen reunion that never happened and a whole lot more. If Eddie Van Halen’s health hadn’t deteriorated, then he — along with singers Sammy Hagar and David Lee Roth — would have reunited in a “kitchen-sink tour,” Eddie’s son Wolfgang said. “If only things had been better,” Wolfgang told Howard Stern on his SiriusXM radio show (via Rolling Stone), “it would have been amazing.” Eddie Van Halen died on Oct. 6, following a long battle with cancer. In the interview, Wolfgang admitted that he convinced his dad to think about touring with both Hagar, Roth — and even bassist Michael Anthony, who Wolfgang replaced in 2006. They even reportedly considered bringing out former Extreme vocalist Gary Cherone, who sang on one Van Halen album, 1998’s Van Halen II. While there haven’t been any public c...
Sammy Hagar’s birthday bash always takes place in Cabo San Lucas around this time. This year, obviously, due to the pandemic, that changed. Hagar and his band, the Circle, are performing on Catalina Island off the coast of California (and home of the Catalina Wine Mixer). Former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony is in Hagar’s band (following his own departure from the band), so when the news of Eddie Van Halen’s death hit, they were obviously together. The two paid their respects to Van Halen on social media, but they’ve since recorded a video honoring their former bandmate. In it, Hagar says that hearing about his former bandmate’s death — who he had just started talking to again earlier this year after years of acrimony — hit him like a “freakin’ Mack Truck” and said that perfo...
Earlier this week, Sammy Hagar said that he was willing to do almost anything in order to get the economy restarted, even sacrificing himself. In an Instagram post, Hagar clarified the comments he made to Rolling Stone. He said that the interview, which was part of a compilation piece done with artists on how they were doing in quarantine, took place in May and that things have changed since it took place. “I did that interview May 8th when we were already several weeks into the stay-at-home, which my family and I took very seriously, and things were starting to look up, the curve was beginning flattening,” he said. So when I was asked if I’d be comfortable enough to get back onstage before a vaccine was out, I was cautiously optimistic. I said, ‘Yeah, not too soon. I want to mak...
