Source: Florian Gaertner / Getty Clubhouse is all the wave, and it has no one to thank but Black creatives for its success. When invite-only app Clubhouse first came on the scene nearly a year ago, you could only find venture capitalists using it to talk about investments and public offerings. Founded by Silicon Valley veterans Paul Davison and Rohan Seth Now, the app is the talk of Twitter after Black creatives plus regular users have found a way to make multiple uses of the audio-only social media medium. Recently it has managed to raise a reported $100 million in backing led by VC firm Andreessen Horowitz and as is reportedly now valued at $1 billion. Once you get the golden ticket to partake in the current iOS only (sorry Android users) app, you might find yourself in a room, getting g...

Source: SOPA Images / Getty After all of the racist and outright crazy sh*t that he has said on Twitter that many have warned would eventually lead to yesterday’s bootleg coup, social media companies have said enough. With only 14 days remaining in his nightmare term, Donald Trump, who has been pushing the norms to the limit, has finally done something that both Democrats and a sizeable number of Republicans can agree was absolutely crazy. After urging a mob of his loyal pro-Trump terrorists to storm the U.S. Capitol Building putting the lives of Congress members, Capitol Police, and his own Vice President in danger, Twitter took the unprecedented act to suspend the inciter-in-chief’s account after he continued to spew false information breaking Twitters Rules. In violation of those rules,...

On Wednesday, the Senate Commerce Committee voted to advance the nomination of Nathan Simington, a Republican in favor of greater government oversight of speech on the internet, to the Federal Communications Commission. Simington’s nomination now awaits a floor vote for final approval. President Donald Trump nominated Simington to be the next Republican FCC Commissioner in September. If approved, Simington would fill Republican Commissioner Mike O’Reilly’s seat, leaving the agency at 2-2 deadlock when Chairman Ajit Pai steps down on January 20th. Without a Democratic majority at the FCC, the Biden administration will likely have difficulties rolling through any major policy measures until another nominee is vetted and approved. In August, Trump abruptly withdrew O’Reilly’s renomination for...
The Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Professor Adeolu Akande, has said only good governance will silence social media from its criticism of government. When government fails, the social media is abuzz with condemnation. The best way to silence the social media is to strive and do well,” he submitted. Professor Akande spoke as Guest Speaker at the Annual Lecture of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Oyo State chapter in Ibadan Tuesday. Speaking on t...
