Samsung uses blockchain technology to address climate change

Samsung Electronics America announced Monday at the CES Tech Conference in Las Vegas its partnership with veritree, a blockchain-based climate solutions platform, to plant 2 million mangrove trees in Madagascar over the next three months. veritree uses blockchain technology to manage the reforestation process and verify each tree that is planted. The tree-planting initiative is part of Samsung’s nature-based action plan on environmental sustainability, specifically to capture and sequester carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. The goal is to restore roughly 200 hectares of land and sequester roughly 1 billion pounds of CO2 over a 25-year period. Enterprise blockchain to play a pivotal role in creating a sustainable future

Bitcoin (BTC) is often used to criticize all blockchain-based projects. This is understandable since Bitcoin was the first project to use a blockchain, is arguably the most recognizable and is the largest cryptocurrency by market cap. In the first half of this article, I will use Bitcoin as a proxy for all blockchain-based projects because most people associate blockchain with Bitcoin. Anything environmentally positive that can be said about Bitcoin will be doubly true for the vast majority of newer blockchain-based projects since Bitcoin uses the oldest version of blockchain technology. Blockchain energy consumption Bitcoin has been attacked for high energy consumption. Headlines pointing out that Bitcoin’s electricity usage is comparable to a country’s total consumption is a popula...

The Big Designer Brands Bringing New Life to Old Clothes

For Gen Z, a generation that has grown up with access to resale platforms such as Depop, preloved fashion is simply an integrated part of the way they shop, but what will be notable is how this behaviour adapts as they move into their 30s and 40s and their spending power increases. As luxury brands dip their toe into the resale sector, it foreshadows a more commercialised future for second-hand (an industry that hasn’t exactly been known for its mass appeal or polish), one that meets the market’s changing needs. You need only look at Gucci Vault to see the potential. With professionally shot imagery and an enviable product edit, the platform sells pieces from the brand’s vintage back-catalogue alongside upcycled collaborations with up-and-coming designers and packs all the g...

11 Brands That Are Helping Us Rethink the Concept of Second-Hand

In 2012, when I studied abroad at the University of Texas at Austin, I became somewhat obsessed with shopping second-hand. During the time that I probably should have spent in the library, my friends and I would trawl through the city’s unique thrift stores, tracking down and trying on the best items we could find. Whether it was a 1980s–style Christian Dior purple power suit complete with covered buttons and padded shoulders or a simple floral cotton dress that looked like it belonged on the set of Dawson’s Creek, we were always elated with our diamond-in-the-rough finds. While I am embarrassed to admit it, at the time, my second-hand shopping habit had very little to do with sustainability or the environment and much more to do with budget and pe...

The Ultimate Guide to Clothing Rental Websites and Apps in the UK

The future of fashion is the community closet, i.e. multi-brand clothing rental websites and apps at every price point. It’s no secret that the fashion and textiles industry is a major player in our global waste problem, alongside the dangers of oil and agriculture. We still have quite a way to go if we want to close the loop on circular fashion, but the growing fashion rental economy is helping to push our consumption in a more sustainable direction. In the past few years, the fashion rental economy has grown at an exceptional rate. American company Rent the Runway was one of the first big names in the rental business, and it’s still going strong a whole decade layer. Since then, the UK has quickly followed suit with dozens of fashion rental websites and apps, specilising in e...

NNPC, Shell donate 10 solar power water projects to communities in Borno

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCO) have donated 10 solar powered boreholes and 16 VIP latrines to some communities in seven LGAs in Borno. Speaking at the formal handover ceremony of the projects in Maiduguri on Wednesday, Borno Deputy Governor, Alhaji Umar Kadafur, lauded NNPC/SNEPCO for the intervention. He said it would impact positively on the lives of the benefitting communities. Kadafur, whose speech was read by Alhaji Mohammed Wanori, the Commissioner for Inter-Governmental Affairs, said the intervention was in line with the administration’s policy of restoration of livelihood in communities worst affected by decade-long insurgency. “This administration places a high premium on the adage which says ‘water ...

Jersey extends licences for EU fishing boats

The government of Jersey, a self-governing Channel Island between France and Britain, said Monday that it had extended a transitional fishing agreement with the European Union allowing EU boats to continue operating in its waters for three months. “The EU has recently requested an extension to the transitional arrangements, which had been due to come to an end on 30 June,” a statement from the Jersey government said, adding that “Jersey ministers have agreed to that request.” Jersey lies just off France’s northern coast and access to its rich waters has become a source of friction since Britain’s departure from the EU on January 1 tore up arrangements for fishing in the Channel. To gain new licences, Jersey has insisted that EU boats hand over proof that they have been operating in its wat...
