A conversation with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’s creative leads

The Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma and Tears of the Kingdom director Hidemaro Fujibayashi found their way by looking to Breath of the Wild’s thrill-seeking experimenters and trusting their own “unconventional” creative instincts. By Charles Pulliam-Moore, a reporter focusing on film, TV, and pop culture. Before The Verge, he wrote about comic books, labor, race, and more at io9 and Gizmodo for almost five years. Share this story Tears of the Kingdom is not the first Legend of Zelda game to serve as a direct sequel to another, but in a franchise that’s so consistently defined by reinvention and reimagination from game to game, Nintendo’s latest stands out. As the follow-up to Breath of the Wild — the game that began the Nintendo Switch’s launch into the stratosphere six years ago — Te...

Anthropic leapfrogs OpenAI with a chatbot that can read a novel in less than a minute

Artificial Intelligence/ Tech / Anthropic has expanded the context window of its chatbot Claude to 75,000 words — a big improvement on current models. Anthropic says it can process a whole novel in less than a minute. a:hover]:text-gray-63 [&>a:hover]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&>a:hover]:text-gray-bd dark:[&>a:hover]:shadow-underline-gray [&>a]:shadow-underline-gray-63 dark:[&>a]:text-gray-bd dark:[&>a]:shadow-underline-gray”>Image: Anthropic An often overlooked limitation for chatbots is memory. While it’s true that the AI language models that power these systems are trained on terabytes of text, the amount these systems can process when in use — that is, the combination of input text and output, also known as their “context window” — is limited. For ...

You don’t have to spend more than $250 on a new smartphone

I know what you’re thinking: that doesn’t sound like a lot of money considering how expensive some phones are these days. (And by these days, I mean yesterday, and by expensive, I mean the Pixel Fold’s eye-watering $1,800 price tag.) But yesterday, I also ordered a new Pixel 7A and, after two years of rebates on Google Fi, it will come out to a clean $250. That’s the same $250 I spent on the Pixel 6A last year, which I will hand over to my pa...

Tears of the Kingdom is a legend retold with slightly less wonder

Tears of the Kingdom doesn’t quite live up to its predecessor, but it’s still a fantastic new approach to Hyrule. Share this story There’s a moment early in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, in one of the very first shrines, when I felt a shiver of pure thrill run through me. I had been presented with a simple task: get to the other side of a fall-to-your-death deep chasm using the new Ultrahand ability and an assortment of wooden boards, stone hooks, and a single fixed rail. The solution was clear enough, so I used Ultrahand’s ability to essentially super glue anything to anything else and pieced together a square board for Link to stand on and a stone hook to connect to the rail. I then hooked my crude contraption on the rail and climbed aboard. Everything worked exactly how I e...

Sony’s new Xperia 1 V features upgraded camera hardware in a familiar design

/ The new smartphone might not look that different from its predecessors on the outside, but Sony is promising big camera improvements. Sony has announced its latest flagship smartphone, the Xperia 1 V. At first glance, it doesn’t look too different from the Xperia 1 IV that proceeded it, with its tall 21:9 display, vertical row of rear cameras, and sensible squared off design. But internally it’s using a new “Exmor T for mobile” sensor for its main camera, which Sony describes as a “2-layer Transistor Pixel stacked CMOS image sensor” that’s 1.7 times larger than the sensor in last year’s model. Sony claims this makes for double the low-light performance versus the Xperia 1 IV, helping to produce images with “rich colors and textures.” Like Sony’s other recent flagships, the Xperia 1 V is ...

The $429.99 Canon PowerShot V10 is an adorable little camera about the size of an extra-thick deck of cards that packs a fixed 19mm equivalent f/2.8 lens and marries it to a 20.9-me...
