‘Anything is possible’ — John McAfee’s former wife responds to faked death claims

The former wife of crypto evangelist and computer programmer John McAfee has responded to a claim made by his ex-girlfriend that he faked his death and was currently in hiding. John McAfee died in a Spanish prison cell in June 2021 while awaiting extradition to the United States on charges of failing to submit tax returns from 2014 to 2018 and not reporting income related to pushing crypto projects and consulting work. He was 75 years old when he passed, and many in and out of the crypto space quickly developed conspiracy theories around his detainment and death. In a Netflix documentary on McAfee’s life and death released on Wednesday titled Running with the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee, ex-girlfriend named Samantha Herrera claimed to have received a phone call from the computer p...

United Texas Bank CEO wants to ‘limit the issuance of US dollar-backed stablecoins to banks’

Scott Beck, chief executive officer of United Texas Bank, called on members of the state’s blockchain working group to recommend policy for leaving stablecoins to banks rather than crypto firms. Speaking before the Texas Work Group on Blockchain Matters in Austin on Friday, Beck suggested limiting the issuance of U.S. dollar-backed stablecoins to licensed banks rather than issuers like Circle. The United Texas Bank CEO cited a November report from the President’s Working Group on Financial Markets, in which the group said stablecoin issuers should be held to the same standards as insured depository institutions including state and federally chartered banks. “If such stablecoins are defined to be ‘money’, banks are the proper economic actor to issue and manage stablecoins,” said Beck. “Bank...

‘There’s a lot less land to go around’ — why White Rock established off-the-grid mining in Texas

Amid many cryptocurrency mining firms in Texas scaling down operations to reduce the load on the power grid, at least one company set up miners not quite as affected by the state’s energy requirements during extreme heat. In June, White Rock Management expanded its crypto mining operations to Texas — its first in the United States — but reported its facility in the Brazos Valley region would mine Bitcoin (BTC) using “environmentally responsible” methods. While the firm’s mining operations in Sweden used hydroelectric power, White Rock CEO Andy Long told Cointelegraph that its Texas facility was “off grid”, powered only by natural gas that would otherwise be burned. “The U.S. is where the action is in terms of markets, so we plan to be in at least another couple of states as well as Texas w...

Core Scientific increased Bitcoin production by 10% in July amid Texas power cuts

Crypto mining firm Core Scientific reported its operations produced 1,221 Bitcoin (BTC) in July even as the company powered down several times in response to demand on the Texas power grid. In a Friday announcement, Core Scientific said its month-over-month Bitcoin production had increased from 1,106 in June to 1,221 in July — roughly 10.4%. The firm reported curtailing operations “due to extreme temperatures at multiple data centers,” but also increased the number of its self-mining servers and hashrate by 6%, to 109,000 and 10.9 exahashes per second (EH/s), respectively. Riot Blockchain’s Bitcoin mining productivity dropped 28% YOY amid record Texas heat

Crypto mining firm Riot Blockchain reported it produced fewer Bitcoin (BTC) in July 2022 than that in July 2021 after scaling down operations at its Texas facility. In a Wednesday announcement, Riot said its miners had produced 318 Bitcoin in July, more than 28% less than the 443 BTC the firm reported generating in July 2021. According to Riot CEO Jason Les, the firm curtailed operations by 11,717 megawatt-hours in July in response to increasing demand on Texas’ energy grid. Many parts of the Lone Star State experienced several days with temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, requiring additional power for air conditioners. “As energy demand in [Electric Reliability Council of Texas, or ERCOT] reached all-time highs this past month, the company voluntarily curtailed its energy...

Footage From Uvalde Shooting Tragedy Displays Incompetence Of Police On Scene

HipHopWired Featured Video CLOSE Source: Brandon Bell / Getty The Uvalde tragedy is still one of the most shocking school shooting events in recent history, and new details are coming forth from that horrible day. Footage shows local police officers toiling about on their phones instead of doing their jobs and protecting the innocent lives inside. As we understand the sensitive nature of the Uvalde shooting, we won’t show the footage of the police officers casually checking their phones as children were screaming in horror, according to reports saying that the audio of the footage was scrubbed. But what is especially angering is that several accounts from the ground stated that parents practically begged the officers to move into action, with some parents taking on the role of protectors t...

GOP Senator Implies He Wants To Bring Back Segregation In Response To Roe V. Wade Decision

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Chip Somodevilla / Getty White conservatives stay telling on themselves on Twitter—and then pretending the racist sh*t they said wasn’t racist. Former President Barack Obama posted a simple tweet joining most Americans in condemning the U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v Wade, which ends constitutionally protected abortion rights. “Today, the Supreme Court not only reversed nearly 50 years of precedent, it relegated the most intensely personal decision someone can make to the whims of politicians and ideologues—attacking the essential freedoms of millions of Americans,” Obama wrote. Related Stories In response, Texas Senator John Cornyn (R) shared Obama’s post with a caption that naturally led people to believe this man wanted to bring back seg...

Defective Edges Owner Candace Owens Falsely Labeled Uvalde Shooter As Trans

HipHopWired Featured Video CLOSE Source: Jason Davis / Getty Candace Owens and her takes often put her in the crosshairs of criticism, although she rarely retracts her stances. The conservative pundit found herself a topic of discussion after misframing the Uvdale shooter as trans. Candace Owens Spreads Falsehoods About Uvalde Shooter As seen on Mashable and Indy100, the shooter was identified as Rolando Ramos. HipHopWired Featured Video Source: CHANDAN KHANNA / Getty The aftermath of the tragedy of the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas has been racked with pain and confusion. This has only been heightened by conflicting reports about the police response to the shooting which were showcased during a primetime news program. On Thursday night (May 26th), anchor Ali Velshi began the MSNBC “Prime” program by addressing the concerns over the shifting accounts of what transpired as the mass shooting unfolded at Robb Elementary School on Tuesday afternoon (May 24th). “In the aftermath of any horrific event, information is spotty. Our understanding of what happens evolves over time, but even by those standards of breaking, and developing news, the inability of officials to give a consistent, and coherent ac...

Gov. Greg Abbott Uses Racist Chicago Trope After Uvalde Shooting

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: ALLISON DINNER / Getty The horrific mass shooting that took place in an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas has rocked the nation and stirred up more pleas for gun control. But right-wingers – including the governor of Texas – are using a racist trope about the city of Chicago to deflect from the issue. Right-wing politicians and media have begun to use a misleading and racist trope about gun violence in the city of Chicago as a way to deflect from the grisly Tuesday (May 24th) mass shooting at the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. At a press conference held in Uvalde on Wednesday (May 25th), Texas Governor Greg Abbott said: “I know people like to try to oversimplify this…There are ‘real gun laws’ in Chicago. There are ‘real gun laws’ in New York. T...
