Welcome to the Year of Indie Sleaze

The indie sleaze era had it all. Sky Ferreira hanging out with Taylor Swift at Katy Perry’s birthday party. A maximalist approach to fashion (no one would bat an eye at pairing shutter shades with a bikini top indoors). Skins parties that recreated the debauchery from the hit British series. Fan-run Tumblr accounts dedicated to the relationship of Alexa Chung and Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner. Wild nights out captured with cameras instead of phones — with flash photography a must. It’s been a decade since this cultural phenomenon ended, but it’s left an enormous footprint on music and fashion. The initial spark came shortly after 9/11, with bands like the Strokes and Interpol releasing their debut albums. It wasn’t until the mid-2000s that indie sleaze became a widespread craze — rea...

30 Signature Guitars for Modern Artists

For decades, having a signature guitar was reserved for classic rock legends — the Claptons, the Hendrixes, the Pages, the SRVs and EVHs. But that’s no longer the case. From pop-punk to heavy metal, alt-country to neo-soul, modern artists of all genres and backgrounds are getting signature guitars from companies big and small. Among the titans of the industry, that intentional shift came with a new generation being put into decision-making positions. “When I started, it was largely classic rock and very much a pantheonic Hall of Fame,” Fender’s Executive VP for Products Justin Norvell says of the early 2000s. “It was an end-of-an-iconic-career kind of thing. But it was my feeling that it should be something that people can use to reflect back upon themselves. A Telecaster can mean James Bu...

Showtime Acquires Doc Based on Rock Book ‘Meet Me in the Bathroom’

Former SPIN intern Lizzy Goodman’s 2017 chronicle of the 2000s-era New York rock scene, Meet Me in the Bathroom, is headed to Showtime in the form of a Pulse Films documentary directed by Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern. The long-in-the-works film debuted earlier this year at Sundance; Showtime will air it before the end of the year, while Utopia will distribute it to theaters. Meet Me in the Bathroom detailed the rock resurgence in New York over the first decade of the new millennium through oral history-style, firsthand accounts from The Strokes, James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem, Interpol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Ryan Adams, among others. The book was hailed not only for documenting personal, often salacious details about the artists’ interpersonal relationships, but examining the effect of ...

Watch Eddie Vedder Join the Strokes for ‘Juicebox’ in Seattle

Fresh off wrapping up Pearl Jam‘s first European tour in four years, Eddie Vedder joined the Strokes last night (Aug. 3) at Seattle’s T-Mobile Park for a performance of “Juicebox,” a track on which the musicians have previously teamed on a handful of occasions dating back to 2006. [embedded content][embedded content] Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas has spoken frequently of Pearl Jam’s impact on his own songwriting. “When I first met Eddie, I feel like I sensed genuine surprise when he learned how much we were influenced by Pearl Jam,” he said in the Pearl Jam 20 book in 2011. “People have never understood that about us. They’d always say The Ramones and The Stooges. But my favorite band was always Pearl Jam.” Vedder sang “Juicebox” with The Strokes on May 4, 2006, during a Rolling Ston...

The Strokes to Play Chicago Benefit to Support Illinois Congressional Candidate Kina Collins

The Strokes will be playing a fundraiser in Chicago on May 30 in support of Democratic congressional candidate Kina Collins. The show will take place at the Metro, which will be the band’s first appearance at the venue in 20 years. “Kina Collins has lived the challenges on the ground in IL-7 and she’s exactly the kind of non-corporate, good-hearted, progressive-minded leader the world needs in these corrupt times,” Julian Casablancas said. “In a system dominated by super-pacs and profit-fueled political machines, Kina is rejecting all that, and choosing to fight for people’s actual needs and desires.” Kina Collins spoke with Casablancas to discuss their passion for progressive politics and government transformation. The frontman often speaks publicly about his political views, formerly end...

The 50 Best Songs of 2001

It was a banner year for producers. The Neptunes — a major commercial force since Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “Got Your Money” — helmed more great songs than we could fit on this list. (Shout out to NSYNC’s “Girlfriend,” an all-time classic boy band single.) Timbaland, Kanye West and Dr. Dre were similarly on fire. It was also a crucial year for several elite artists: You’ll notice we couldn’t help but include multiple songs from Radiohead, Daft Punk, Destiny’s Child and The Strokes. But there’s something for everyone here — from Southern hip-hop (Mystikal) to indie-rock (Spoon) to prog-metal (Tool). So raise up, roll out and let us blow your mind. Here are the 50 Best Songs of 2001. 50. No Doubt – “Hella Good” [embedded content] Though “Hella Good” wasn’t the forever end of No Doubt (the band reu...

The Strokes Tease Snippet of Unreleased Song in NYC Mayoral Candidate Maya Wiley Ad

The legendary New York Y2K rock-revivalists the Strokes have not been shy in endorsing New York City mayoral candidate Maya Wiley throughout her campaign and have since gained an unofficial status as her personal backing artist, sans solicitation. Today, the band debuted a new song on a one-minute television ad for Wiley entitled “Starting Again.” It shows shots of New York City in black-and-white as the characteristically catchy tune plays as frontman singer Julian Casablancas melodizes over it. In the clips, the band is interacting with the mayoral candidate herself before Maya’s name appears rendered in the Strokes’ classic font in the outro. Check it out below. The Strokes Play First-Ever Acoustic Show to Support NYC Mayoral Candidate Maya Wiley

On Saturday evening, the Strokes played their first-ever acoustic show. The virtual event, aptly titled The Strokes Unplugged, was a fundraiser for Democratic New York City mayoral candidate Maya Wiley. The four-song set began with a fuzzy rendition of the U.S. national anthem. From there, the band played a stripped down version of their This Is It classic, “Someday,” and “The Adults Are Talking” off The New Abnormal before jamming out while credits began to roll. Watch the performance below. [embedded content] This isn’t the first time the Strokes have showed their support of a political candidate — during the 2020 presidential campaign they played at a Bernie Sanders rally — however, though the band has taken a firm stance on its political views, Julian Casablanc...

62 Musicians Predict the 2021 Baseball Season

Somehow, some way, it’s baseball season again. Yes, already. Last year’s abbreviated run saw the Los Angeles Dodgers defeat the Tampa Bay Rays in six games to win their first World Series title in 32 years, something that Ben Gibbard predicted in our 2020 preview. As you can imagine, Dodgers fans — especially the ones below — are in great spirits heading into the 2021 season. So what does that mean about this year? Absolutely nothing. As COVID restrictions start to loosen and with more fans allowed back into stadiums, excitement is beginning to buzz, especially with our group of experts. Like last time, many are hopeful that this will be their team’s year. We searched far and wide to get predictions for the upcoming Major League Baseball season, creating a proper barometer of what these su...
