Hip-Hop and TikTok Are Bringing Pop-Punk Back in a Big Way

<span class="localtime" data-ltformat="F j, Y | g:ia" data-lttime="2021-05-04T18:36:48+00:00“>May 4, 2021 | 2:36pm ET Pop-punk has crept back onto the charts, and its latest takeover is well underway — without any live shows and long after the end of Warped Tour, a hallmark of the genre’s previous reign. In the past year, pop-punk has made its comeback, but with the help of some unlikely forces. The first of those forces are hip-hop crossovers, which have propelled pop-punk to the top of the charts. 24kGoldn and iann dior’s single, “Mood”, blended elements of pop-punk and hip-hop and went to No. 1. On the Alternative Airplay chart, All Time Low got their first No. 1 with their single “Monsters”, which featured hip-hop star blackbear. A remix featuring D...

Study: One in Four People Discover EDM Through TikTok

In a new study conducted by OnlineRoulette.org, social media’s newest goliath has been shown to be an undeniably influential method of music discovery. TikTok‘s popularity has surged since the social media platform launched in 2016 and filled the void left by the dismantled short video service Vine (R.I.P.). While TikTok employs a slew of features to make users’ videos pop, it seems that now more than ever, the songs used to soundtrack those clips are among the most appealing aspects of the platform.  The study surveyed nearly 1,000 TikTok users to gather data about the platform’s influence on music, and the results were unsurprisingly staggering. For instance, 55% of respondents said that TikTok has influenced their music taste and 47% believe that it’s ...

Since this is 2021, when news is force-fed down our throats like ipecac syrup, odds are you heard about the death of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. The passing of the storied prince at the age of 99 sent ripples throughout Europe, as many mourned his death while others bemoaned his checkered past. Regardless, the BBC abandoned its entire slate of programming to dedicate blanket coverage of the news, slashing its TV and radio schedule and drawing a staggering 110,000 complaints from the public. Apparently the news of Prince Philip’s death abruptly invaded each channel like a targeted coup. During Radio 1’s “Classic Dance Anthems with Charlie Hedges” show, dance music fans were raging to Alan Fitzpatrick‘s techno banger “We Do What We WantR...

Radiohead Join TikTok With Cryptic New Video

Radiohead have officially joined TikTok. A verified account for the alt-rock legends appeared on the video app earlier this morning, but the only thing they’ve posted so far is proving very difficult to parse. The short clip features Radiohead’s mysterious associate Chieftain Mews delivering some sort of dystopian news broadcast at a desk with the words “Mews” emblazoned on it. The video is shot in black-and-white with a grainy, glitchy filter, and there’s some sort of strange logo on the wall behind Mews that resembles graffiti art. As always, Mews is wearing a bizarre bald cap that’s pulled down just above his eyes, and he’s rocking a suit — but no tie — a white undershirt, and dark-colored nail polish. What he says makes even less sense. “Say something,” we hear an off-camera voice at t...

School Teacher Goes Viral for Awesome Korn Version of the Alphabet Song: Watch

A metal-loving school teacher has reinvented the alphabet song, and he’s blowing up TikTok in the process. Nick Harrison’s aggro version of the ABCs, set to Korn’s “Coming Undone”, even got the attention of the pioneering nu-metal band’s singer, Jonathan Davis. Harrison, who goes by the TikTok handle MrProfessor318, titled his video “My audition for School of Rock 2,” and it features the educator going full-on headbanger from A to Z. The loud lesson in literacy has earned Harrison more than 130,000 likes as of this posting. Davis shared the clip on his Instagram Stories, and Harrison acknowledged the Korn singer’s shout out in follow-up TikToks. “When Jonathan Davis, the lead singer of Korn, of course, posts your video to his Instagram story — I can’t even talk, man!,” the teacher exclaime...

TikTok Oracle Deal is reportedly ‘Shelved Indefinitely’

Sourced from Cosmico Last year, Tik Tok’s parent company ByteDance and Oracle reached a “technical partnership” for the social media platform’s US operations. The deal was expected to address the national security concerns surrounding TikTok, raised by the Trump Administration. But now, it would seem that these efforts have been ‘shelved indefinitely’ while US President Joe Biden “undertakes a broad review of his predecessor’s efforts to address potential security risks from Chinese tech companies”. Spokesperson for the National Security Council, Emily Horne told the Wall Street Journal that “we plan to develop a comprehensive approach to securing US data that addresses the full range of threats we face. This includes the risk posed by Chinese apps and other software that operate in t...

According to 9to5Google, the TikTok app works similarly to the regular app where “videos are shown in a feed [and users] can flip through to see more content”. According to TMZ, the viral sensation is scheduled to appear as part of Biden’s virtual inauguration parade later this week. The President-elect’s planning team reportedly tapped Apodaca “because they saw how his feel-good video uplifted the world this past fall during social unrest and pandemic anxiety.” For those who may have somehow missed it, Apodaca’s famed TikTok clip saw him skateboarding blissfully to Fleetwood Mac hit “Dreams” while sipping from a bottle of Ocean Spray. For a brief moment, the hum...
