For 2021, my aim is to be as self-disciplined as possible when it comes to trends. While I think designers should keep pushing towards a more timeless approach to design that prioritises longevity, it can be too easy to demonise the concept of trends as a whole. Ultimately, reinvention is what makes fashion so exciting. The key is to just focus on styles that remain true to your personal style and that don’t run the risk of being worn once and then discarded. With this lens in place, I’ve been passing my eye over the trends that are coming up for autumn/winter 2021 and making a shortlist of styles that I feel will slip into my pre-existing wardrobe with ease. My first point of call? The waistcoat. You Deserve to Make Money ...
The term “effortlessly chic” gets thrown around a lot in fashion. In reality, these two words are rarely applicable. What about when it comes to the white shirt? Absolutely. No matter what sort of budget you have or what kind of sense of style, the white shirt is the ultimate wardrobe staple. Is there anything else so simple yet so chic? It’s so easy to wear on the weekend and while working from home. It’s perfect for a night out (when we have them) but also a night in watching Netflix. It’s the ultimate classic to have in one’s arsenal, and whether it’s oversized or fitted, linen or poplin, there are endless ways this classic piece appeals and can be rendered. For many of us tie-dye will have specific, and possibly negative, associations with the ‘90s. It was a look that was prevalent in teen TV shows and regularly spotted on famous girl band members, and it exuded a certain sort of bohemian spirit that demanded accompanying ripped denim, eye-wateringly bright accessories and a general ‘too cool for school’ attitude. Well, like it or not, the trend has returned, with a plethora of tie-dye buys cropping up on the runways of Off-White, Dior, Stella McCartney and Proenza Schouler this season. I love to wax lyrical to anyone who will listen (read: other editors) about the fact that Arket does the best white T-shirts. After all, in fashion land, getting your hands on the perfect basic—be it a white tee, jeans or tailored blazer—is always something to celebrate. Well, the more I speak to fellow fashion lovers about the power of the perfect staple, the more I realise that Arket is universally loved and regarded as a go-to in this department, particularly when it comes to tops. For anyone who has studied Who What Wear’s spring 2021 trend report—if not, you can remedy the situation here—you’ll know that rediscovering the joy of getting dressed was at the heart of this season’s collections and manifested in everything from feel-good prints and fantasy frocks to paintbox brights and playful cut-outs. The graphic tee? I like to think of it as one of the more democratic ways to inject a little dopamine into your summer dressing, but you’ll be happy to hear that these could not be further from the Groovy Chick iterations of your teens. (Although, I’m sure there’s a corner of TikTok where those are cool again.) You Deserve to Make Money Even When you are looking for Dates Onl...
It might come as a surprise to some to know that my perfect white T-shirt comes from none other than high street fave Arket. But, then again, since its inception it is a brand that has aced it in the high-quality basics stakes, with premium-feel fabrics at reasonable prices. The brand’s crew neck T-shirt ticks all the boxes: it’s not see-through, it has a high neckline, boxy fit and is fitted across the shoulders but loose over the hips. Best of all? It comes in at only £15. Not too shabby. I have worn mine with everything from tailored trousers at fashion week (see above) to spring-ready denim and chunky sandals. It is truly a multi-tasking hero. I’ve even converted my practical-minded husband to ...
Virtual fashion weeks have meant that for the past year or so, we haven’t experienced those everyone’s-phone-goes-up moments when a truly spectacular look goes down the runway. It only happens a handful of times a season when there is a look so fresh and so brilliant that everyone unanimously falls for it at the exact same time. While in Zoom land, we can’t hear audible gasps or see the entire front row video the same outfit, there was one look in the S/S 21 collections that went well and truly viral. The item in question was a bright-pink oversize button-down shirt at Valentino. The silk shirt is so oversize that it can be worn with little else, and on the runway, it was styled with a pair of barely visible short shorts. The shade of pink is so bright tha...
I had spotted the style a month or so ago and it had stuck in my mind thanks to its clean-lined simplicity, premium-look plisse fabric and boat-neckline. It immediately reminded me of the classic Issey Miyake Pleats Please pieces that I’ve always loved, and I knew that I would be able to dress it up with a midi skirt and heeled boots and keep it casual with high-waisted jeans. I’ve only owned it a few weeks, but I’ve already worn the top out to dinner and for countless work Zoom meetings, and each time it has been greeted with so many compliments. If that’s not a sign of a good investment, then I don’t know what is. I’m usually a UK 8 on the top but prefer a looser fit so decided to get a small, whi...

A nice top and jeans was an outfit that peaked in popularity in the ’00s, as the likes of Marissa Cooper and Summer Roberts made party tops and low-rise flares the coolest thing to wear past 6 p.m. The idea of going out dressing has been an alien concept over the past year, and as our diaries slowly start to fill up with reunion plans and restaurants reopen, this outfit is the perfect way to ease back into dressing up. You can opt for something playful, daring or even attention-seeking, and make it seem more relaxed by pairing it with any pair of jeans. There are five types of going-out tops that are particularly popular at the moment, which range from simple basics to OTT “I’m back” statement makers. Below you’ll find smock tops with bow details, pl...
Engadget Apple Music’s payment rate for artists and labels is fundamentally a penny per stream, according to a letter from the company posted on its artist dashboard and first reported by the Wall Street Journal. That payment rate is higher than Spotify, which has a confusing variable rate scheme that basically tops out at a half-penny per stream. Announcing a penny-per-stream rate is a nice PR win for Apple Music, since it is 1. very simple and 2. Spotify hates talking about its per-stream payments, which the company insists are a misleading figure. Seriously, it just launched an entire website called Loud&Clear last month designed to help artists and fans understand how payments work, and a good chunk of it is devoted to explaining why per-stream rates are not the right thing to focu...
