<span class="localtime" data-ltformat="F j, Y | g:ia" data-lttime="2021-05-11T19:42:55+00:00“>May 11, 2021 | 3:42pm ET In April, The Simpsons pissed off Morrissey with the show’s portrayal of the former Smiths singer as an overweight racist on an episode titled “Panic on the Streets of Springfield.” Now, you can hear “Everyone Is Horrid Except Me (And Possibly You)”, one of the songs performed by Quilloughby, the Benedict Cumberbatch-voiced character parodying Morrissey. The track was written by Bret McKenzie of Flight of the Conchords and was released via Hollywood Records. It features Cumberbatch (as Quilloughby) dueting with Yeardley Smith (as Lisa Simpson). With lyrics like “Everybody is horrid/ And my dear, I fear/ You are too,” it doesn’t sound to...

Scarlett Johansson Will Receive The Generation Award At The 2021 MTV Movie & TV Awards

Scarlett Johansson has been working in the entertainment industry for over two decades. Long before she was an action star and an actual Avenger, her earliest credits dated back to the 1990s, where she inhabited child and teen roles before taking on deeper, more challenging projects and becoming a critical darling in beloved films by the Coen Brothers, Christopher Nolan, Spike Jonze, and more. In 2019, she joined an elite club by receiving two Academy Award nominations in the same year, thanks to her work in both Marriage Story and JoJo Rabbit. It’s not a stretch to say that Johansson’s work has spanned an entire generation. At the 2021 MTV Movie & TV Awards, that designation will become official: Johansson will receive the Generation Award during the ceremony, set to air o...

NBC Cancels Golden Globes in 2022 Amid Diversity Controversy

<span class="localtime" data-ltformat="F j, Y | g:ia" data-lttime="2021-05-10T18:58:08+00:00“>May 10, 2021 | 2:58pm ET NBC is declining to air the Golden Globes in 2022 due to the ongoing controversy over the lack of diversity among the group of international journalists who vote on the awards. “We continue to believe that the HFPA (Hollywood Foreign Press Association) is committed to meaningful reform. However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right,” NBC said in a statement released on Monday. “As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.” The HFPA came under f...

Streaming Wars 2021 Mid-Year Scorecard: How Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+, and HBO Max Stack Up

<span class="localtime" data-ltformat="F j, Y | g:ia" data-lttime="2021-05-10T19:00:25+00:00“>May 10, 2021 | 3:00pm ET Q1 earnings for media and tech companies are now behind us, so it’s a good time to recap how Netflix and its four biggest challengers — Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+, and HBO Max — stack up and are trending for the rest of 2021. Just 18 months ago, Netflix largely played alone. What a difference those months make for the reigning champ in these “streaming wars.” Now, Netflix faces giant global competitors seemingly around every turn. Ditto for us consumers, as streaming became our activity of choice (frequently, our only activity!) during the past pandemic year’s global lockdown. While life during the COVID-19 pandemic has been...

Elon Musk’s SNL Debut Was Smug, Off-Putting, but Mostly Just Boring

<span class="localtime" data-ltformat="F j, Y | g:ia" data-lttime="2021-05-09T15:06:31+00:00“>May 9, 2021 | 11:06am ET After a relatively quiet post-election season that saw Saturday Night Live relax and refocus on the funnier, weirder whims of its talented and oversized cast, the show grabbed more headlines over the past month by booking billionaire troublemaker and rocket enthusiast Elon Musk to host. This wasn’t an unprecedented move; depending on one’s opinion of Musk, it lands somewhere between the affable-if-suspect dorkiness of booking rich guy Steve Forbes, who hosted after the end of his presidential campaign in 1996, and the beyond-suspect awfulness of booking rich guy Donald Trump, who has hosted twice, once during his own presidential campai...

<span class="localtime" data-ltformat="F j, Y | g:ia" data-lttime="2021-05-08T23:23:38+00:00“>May 8, 2021 | 7:23pm ET Tonight’s episode of Saturday Night Live will be historic, and it’s not because a union-busting COVID skeptic tech billionaire is serving as its host. For the first time in the show’s 46-year history, SNL will broadcast live across the globe. As Variety reports, a YouTube stream of tonight’s episode hosted by Elon Musk will be available in more than 100 countries worldwide. “SNL is a global phenomenon and this livestream marks the first time audiences around the world will experience the show simultaneously along with the US,” said Frances Berwick, chairman of NBCU’s entertainment networks, in a statement. R.I.P. Tawny Kitaen, Whitesnake’s “Here I Go Again” Video Vixen Dead at 59

<span class="localtime" data-ltformat="F j, Y | g:ia" data-lttime="2021-05-08T14:53:16+00:00“>May 8, 2021 | 10:53am ET Julie E. “Tawny” Kitaen, former actress and muse for the ’80s hard rock band Whitesnake, has died at the age of 59. The San Diego native passed away Friday (May 7th) at her home in Newport Beach, California, according to Variety. A cause of death has not yet been disclosed. Kitaen played the bride-to-be of Tom Hans’ character in the 1984 film Bachelor Party. She also had a reoccurring role on the early ’90s sitcom The New WKRP in Cincinnati, and played Jerry’s girlfriend in Seinfeld’s classic 1991 episode, “The Nose Job”. Related Video But Kitaen is undoubtedly most synomonymous with Whitesnake, having appeared in several of the band’s ...

In just a little over a week, on Sunday, May 17, the MTV Movie & TV Awards will celebrate the best in television and film, from breakthrough performances to the slickest on-screen smooches. But the ceremony wouldn’t be complete without a sizzling score, which is why the multi-hyphenate rapper, actor, and media personality DJ Snoopadelic, a.k.a. Snoop Dogg, will bring the beats to this year’s show. It all goes down Sunday, May 16, hosted by the comedian and Saturday Night Live alum Leslie Jones. Sacha Baron Cohen Will Receive The Comedic Genius Award At The 2021 MTV Movie & TV Awards

Just last month, Sacha Baron Cohen was recognized with a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the 2021 Oscars for his work as Abbie Hoffman in Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7. As that film landed major awards props, Baron Cohen’s other key 2020 cinematic moment — the resurrection of his most famous character, Borat Sagdiyev, for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm — was likewise highly lauded for its immense comedy, deep irreverence, and political satire. It was a good year to be Baron Cohen. And the celebration continues: The Academy Award-nominated actor, screenwriter, and comedian will be honored with the Comedic Genius Award at the 2021 MTV Movie & TV Awards, airing live on MTV from Los Angeles on Sunday, May 16. The designation “honors an actor who has made incom...
