On October 15th, the cast of The West Wing reunites for a special one-off theatrical stage presentation airing exclusively on HBO Max. In anticipation, the first trailer has been unveiled, and I’m happy to report that my liberal heart just bursted into a thousand pieces. The special brings back together President Jed Barlet (Martin Sheen) and his loyal White House staff (Bradley Whitford, Allison Janney, Richard Schiff, Rob Lowe, Dulé Hill, and Janel Moloney) for a reenactment of the Season 3 episode “Hartsfield’s Landing”. The episode — which sees Josh Lyman (Whitford) obsess over the voting results in a small New Hampshire town — is an apt choice given the reason for this reunion. The special serves as a voter awareness campaign benefiting Michelle Obama’s When We All Vote non-...
Saturday Night Live has found a last-minute replacement to fill in as musical guest for this weekend’s episode: Jack White will take the stage at Studio 8H for his first live performance in nearly a year. White is replacing country singer Morgan Wallen, whose appearance was canceled after he violated COVID-19 safety protocols. As SNL head Lorne Michaels explained, due to the last minute nature of the booking, “It has to be somebody who is ready to go,” and Jack answered the call. Comedian Bill Burr will host the episode. It’ll mark White’s fourth appearance on SNL and third as a solo artist. He most recently served as musical guest in 2018 in support of his most recent solo album, Boarding House Reach. Earlier this week, The White Stripes announced their first-ever greatest-hits compilatio...
You know Donald Trump is bad news when even Newman hates the guy. In a new ad commissioned by PACRONYM, a Democratic super PAC, Wayne Knight reprises his iconic Seinfeld role to defend the US Postal Service and offer his two cents on the 2020 Election. “According to this month-old issue of Dr. Roberta Greenburg’s Time magazine subscription, there’s been a systematic, premeditated assault on the U.S. mail by President Trump and his so-called Postmaster General,” Newman says while casually flipping through someone’s mail as he’s wont to do. He coyly adds, “That guy’s never even licked a stamp.” The ad was written by former Seinfeld scribe and producer David Mandel, who knows a thing or two about politics given that he most recently served as a showrunner for HBO’s most astute political ...
It’s a pretty pretty pretty good time to be Larry David. The Curb Your Enthusiasm creator got married to his girlfriend, Ashley Underwood, this past week. According to People, David and Underwood tied the knot on Wednesday in Southern California. While the timing may seem strange, one Instagram commenter has the most logical answer: “Larry was like, ‘pandemic? Let’s get married! No guests!” The couple began dating in 2017 after meeting at a birthday party for Sacha Baron Cohen. Underwood was a producer on Cohen’s Showtime series, Who is America?. “We were seated next to each other,” David recounted to the New York Times of their first-time meeting. “Much to her surprise I left before dessert. I was doing so well, banter-wise, I didn’t want to risk staying too long and blowing the good impr...
Stephen King’s The Stand was on full display at New York Comic-Con. On Friday afternoon, CBS All Access’ highly anticipated miniseries adaptation took over the virtual convention with a star-studded panel that culminated in the reveal of a brand new full-length trailer. Unlike the teaser that dropped back in August, this trailer offers a true in-depth look at the apocalyptic epic. A few of the images should send a shiver down your spine, particularly as we deal with our own ensuing pandemic. We get shots of the principal characters, we get glimpses of the world-building at hand, and we see a ton of allusions to the original novel. If you weren’t hyped already, this should leave Constant Readers champing at the bit for December. Watch the trailer below. [embedded content] Hosted by Van...
Green Lanterns (image via HBO Max) and Seth Grahame-Smith, photo courtesy of author In brightest day, in darkest night, no evil shall escape Seth Grahame-Smith’s sight! The author-turned screenwriter/producer will serve as showrunner on HBO Max’s forthcoming series based on DC Comics’ Green Lantern. Originally announced a year ago, the show has also received a straight-to-series 10 episode order. Graham-Smith (IT producer, The LEGO Batman Movie writer) will co-write the first of those shows alongside Marc Guggenheim, the co-creator of The CW’s Arrowverse. Guggenheim previously co-wrote the failed 2011 Green Lantern movie with Greg Berlanti, who also returns for the TV adaption as producer. But who’s behind the series is perhaps less interesting to fans than who’s in it. The Green Lanterns ...
Exactly one week ago today, Donald Trump was hospitalized after testing positive for COVID-19. After being shot up with steroids and other experimental drugs, Trump claims to have made a complete and full recovery, and is ready to return to the campaign trail as soon as this weekend. Most health experts are rightfully skeptical. As Kavita K. Patel, an internal medicine physical at Mary’s Center in Washington, DC, wrote in the Washington Post, the “typical length of stays for COVID-19 patients who are treated the way Trump was can approach weeks.” At various points over the course of his hospitalization, Trump was given supplemental oxygen, heavy steroids, and a cocktail of experimental drugs that is not available to anyone outside of clinical trials. The more practical scenario is that Tru...

Would you risk your life for love? The latest episode of Catfish, which explored the complexities of dangerous, political turmoil in Venezuela, posed the question in black and white, but the results had a woman who was looking for love ultimately seeing red. As part of MTV’s latest online love investigation, Nev and Kamie met a woman named Dianela via Zoom (Catfish: Quarantine Edition remains in full swing), who said she’d been in a back-and-forth relationship with a man named Jose for nearly four years. Dianela, who first came in contact with Jose while they were both playing Black Ops 3 in their native Venezuela, said they lived in different cities, but their online connection made her feel at home. “This is like a wild international love story out of a movie,” Nev said as Dianela chroni...

George R.R. Martin has broken his silence on Hodor. In James Hibberd’s new oral history on the series, Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon, the blockbuster author digressed on the fate of the fan favorite character and how it differs in his forthcoming novels. Rest assured, there are spoilers ahead for both the HBO series and his highly anticipated and much-delayed follow-up, The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. “I thought they executed it very well, but there are going to be differences in the book,” Martin explained. “They did it very physical — ‘hold the door’ with Hodor’s strength. In the book, Hodor has stolen one of the old swords from the crypt. Bran has been warging into Hodor and practicing with his body, because Bran had been trained in swordplay. So telling Hodor to ‘hold the door’ ...
