Why Were Bear Grylls and Sandra Oh at the Queen’s Funeral?

The passing of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8th has attracted mourners from all stretches of the imagination, from an astoundingly long queue of British civilians waiting to pay their respects to  the more surprising guests at her funeral at Westminster Abbey on Monday, September 19th. Among the royals, famous family friends, and foreign Heads of State like President Joe Biden, two attendees grabbed the attention of viewers for their seemingly random place at the proceedings: Bear Grylls and Sandra Oh. The two entertainment star’s attendance was actually not that unusual considering both were serving as representatives for organizations that would be expected to send dignitaries to any important event related to The Crown. Grylls was invited as the Chief Scout for the United Kingdo...

Liz Shannon Miller’s Favorite TV Shows of the Last 15 Years

It’s Consequence’s 15th anniversary, and all September long we’ll be publishing a series of retrospective pieces encompassing our publication’s own history — and the entertainment landscape in general. Today, Senior Entertainment Editor Liz Shannon Miller runs down her favorite television shows of the last 15 years. I enjoy all forms of entertainment, but my first love was television, a medium I became obsessed with back in the days when there were no DVRs, no streaming services, no DVD box sets — just your butt in front of a TV tuned to the right channel at the right time. Stressful, but also magical in its own way. It’s a good thing watching television has gotten a lot easier in the 21st century, because there is now a lot more than there used to be. Thus, when faced with this assig...

The Rings of Power Star Cynthia Addai-Robinson on Episode 4 and What It’s Like to Be Queen

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Season 1 Episode 2, “The Great Wave.”] Because of the huge amounts of secrecy surrounding The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power throughout its production, star Cynthia Addai-Robinson tells Consequence she didn’t know what role, specifically, she was auditioning for during a “very long and up-and-down process, to eventually get to be a part of this amazing series.” But once she knew a little more about Queen Regent Míriel, and the character’s place in the lore of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy universe, “I was very, very excited to get the opportunity to play a character that has a really interesting backstory,” she says. “It was also a chance to do something I felt like I never really done bef...

Los Espookys’ Bernardo Velasco and Cassandra Ciangherotti on Season 2 and Making a Bilingual Comedy

There aren’t really any other shows like Los Espookys on television right now. But the story is bigger than that, thanks to the eclectic cast, including Bernardo Velasco, Cassandra Ciangherotti, Ana Fabrega, Julio Torres, and Fred Armisen, and the wild journeys each character is on. In Season 2, the Los Espookys crew is back to create yet more spooky mayhem, while dealing with the repercussions of Season 1’s relationship dramas. Below, transcribed and edited for clarity, series stars Bernardo Velasco and Cassandra Ciangherotti, who play founding Los Espookys members Velasco and Ciangherotti, tell Consequence a...

Atlanta Season 4 Remains One of TV’s Most Imaginative and Subversive Series Ever: Review

The Pitch: Since 2016, FX’s Atlanta has proven to audiences that it has no intentions of playing by any rules. Created by and starring multi-hyphenated talent Donald Glover, the story about a broke Ivy League dropout who manages his cousin’s burgeoning rap career while their wacky and aimless friend tags along does not seem like it would become one of television’s most imaginative, subversive, and thought-provoking shows of all time. After four seasons of following Earn, Paper Boi (Brian Tyree Henry), Darius (Lakeith Stanfield), and Earn’s baby’s momma Van (Zazie Beetz), however, that’s exactly what Atlanta has become — and its farewell season is no different. In the fourth and final season of Atlanta, the characters have all fully evolved from the financially unstable and emotionally lost...

Awards Are Bullshit, But It Would Still Be Nice If Better Call Saul Could Win Some

After last night’s Emmy Awards ceremony, Better Call Saul can lay claim to a remarkable achievement: 46 Emmy nominations and zero wins over the course of its six-season run. Forty. Six. Forty-six chances to recognize one of the best shows on television for its remarkable achievements, and 46 failures to do so. It feels mean to keep harping on that number, but 46 is staggering. This TVLine list showcases 25 great shows that also never won an Emmy, but most of the shows on that list only received a few token nods during their run — they weren’t playing the game as hard as Saul has done over the past six years. And yet 46 losses. It’s a lot! Upon its initial premiere, the genre-defying crime drama may have been an immediate part of the Emmys race as a spinoff of Breaking Bad, which had a much...
