Rick Astley has returned with a new cover but from an unlikely source. While he’s given fans a solid rendition of the Foo Fighters’ “Everlong,” the ’80s pop-singer-turned-viral-sensation took on Post Malone’s “Better Now,” off the ubiquitous artist’s 2018 album, Beerbongs & Bentleys. “So there are a lot of words in this song,” Astley admitted, adding, “It’s not my song. I don’t really know it properly, but I love it. So I’m going to give it a go. Let’s see what happens.” Whether it actually is the number of lyrics that he needs to get through or the quicker tempo he’s performing at, Astley makes a solid effort and even shows a bit more of a rasp in his voice, compared to the smooth pop vocals his fans are used to. Astley has also covered “Titanium” by David Guetta featuring Sia. Last y...
St. Vincent teamed with Japanese musician/composer/producer Yoshiki to craft a fresh version of her song “New York,” which dropped today (Aug. 28). St. Vincent’s signature tune was originally released on her Grammy-winning 2017 album MASSEDUCTION, and the reimagined version features Yoshiki’s classically inspired arrangements, creating unpredictable new textures. St. Vincent said in a statement that she was “honored” to work the multifaceted artist. “Yoshiki’s arrangement added to the song in the way time or distance transform longtime friends or relationships: the original is still recognizable, but subtly and significantly altered,” she said. “I admire how St. Vincent approaches music in an innovative and courageous way,” Yoshiki said in a statement, adding, “Her music breaks the boundar...
The Flaming Lips have shared a slew of videos in the build-up to their upcoming album, American Head, and today, they added to that stunning array of clips with “Mother Please Don’t Be Sad.” The lyrics, based on singer Wayne Coyne’s teenaged near-death-experience, include the poignant “I didn’t mean to die tonight / but those robbers were so fast / their guns and their anger and I lost the fight. “ The song’s socially-distanced video was filmed safely during quarantine in the band’s native Oklahoma and directed by Coyne and longtime collaborator George Salisbury. Watch the video below. [embedded content] Additionally, The Lips have created a series of mini-documentaries highlighting songs from American Head. Queen + Adam Lambert debuted their live version of Queen’s “The Show Must Go On” today (Aug. 27), which was captured at London’s O2 Arena on July 4, 2018. It was the last track on 1991’s Innuendo, Queen’s final album released during Freddie Mercury’s lifetime. Check out the performance below: [embedded content] Brian May spoke about the song in a statement. “Even though we were all aware of Freddie’s impending tragedy, we had some inspired and joyful times in the studio, making the Innuendo album. We didn’t speak much about Freddie’s illness — he just wanted to get on with ‘business as usual’ as far as possible. But already there was only a day or two per week when Freddie was well enough to come in and work with us. We grabbed those precious momen...
Silver Synthetic, the New Orleans-based psychedelic-garage band, will drop their four-song Out of the Darkness EP on Jack White’s Third Man Records on Oct. 2, with a full album set to arrive in 2021. What began as a fun way for Bottomfeeders’ Chris Lyons to tinker with songs that didn’t work for that band became an entirely new project. The quartet, which formed in 2018, is comprised of Chris Lyons and Lucas Bogner of the band the Bottomfeeders, bassist Pete Campanelli and Kunal Prakash from Jeff the Brotherhood. Their first show was fittingly at ManRay Records in, of course, New Orleans. Third Man co-founder/co-owner Ben Swank recalls the first time he saw Silver Synthetic perform: “It was one of those moments that immediately caught everyone’s attention in the room when they st...
Source: Victor Boyko / Getty Want to feel broke this beautiful day? Then come gaze at Page Six’s paparazzi photos of Jack Dorsey summering with The Carters during their family vacation. Last week, Jay-Z and Beyoncé chartered a small yacht to ride through the “luxe waterways” of The Hamptons. Onboard to join the couple was Dorsey, who we imagined earned imaginary stripes to share air with unicorn twins Rumi and Sir. We rarely see their offsprings in the first place, so that says a lot. It’s not clear if this trip was for business or pleasure, but the photos suggest that it was at least a bit of both happening– one of the giveaways was catching Roc Nation executive Jay Brown lounging with the crew. Plot twist: Jay Z and Jack are working to incorporate Tida...

Recently, we caught up with Lanegan, who had a lot to say about his new album, his autobiography and technology. He also covered Galaxie 5000’s “Summertime” with Dylan Carlson. As for Dulli, we spoke with him earlier this year about his solo album and he recently gave us his prediction for the 2020 bas...
Following the release of an EP recorded at their New Jersey rehearsal space last month, Yo La Tengo will be unveiling another EP, Sleepless Night, in October. The Byrds’ “Wasn’t Born to Follow” is the first song to arrive from the collection. The EP features one new song, “Bleeding,” plus covers of songs by The Delmore Brothers, Bob Dylan, Ronnie Lane, and The Flying Machine. The covers were initially released as one side of an LP included within a limited-edition catalog for the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art’s (LACMA) forthcoming retrospective for the Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara. Artist Nara, a longtime YLT fan, worked in collaboration with the group to choose the EP’s songs. This Matador version of the EP is a single-sided 12” with original cover art by Nara, a draw...
Source: Jon Cherry / Getty Tamika Mallory addressed criticism after supporters of Breonna Taylor questioned if activists and influencers were using the deceased victim’s name to clout-chase after the media rollout for a BreonnaCon event organized by her foundation, Until Freedom. Jordan Olds, host of Two Minutes to Late Night, dropped an explosive new cover. But unlike his previous collaborations, Olds took a step down from this one and handed the space over to musicians of color, who covered Rage Against the Machine’s 1992 protest song “Killing in the Name.” “Frick you, I won’t do what you tell me! We made a thrash metal cover of Rage Against the Machine and based on the subject matter of the song we wanted to feature only non-white performers. Defund the police,” said a caption on the video. The cover included: Aaron Heard, member of Nothing and leader of Jesus Piece; electro-rap artist Miss Eaves; Creeping Death guitarist Trey Pemberton; Fever333 guitarist Stephen Harrison; Fucked And Bound bassist Rah Davis; Spotlights drummer Chris Enriquez; and guitarist Izzy...
