Day 4 of the European Championships provided the standout moment of the tournament to date as Czech Republic beat Scotland 2-0 at Hampden Park. Patrik Schick’s stunning long-range strike caught goalkeeper David Marshall on the hop and left most England fans smiling. Wonder goals aside, there has been plenty going on around the tournament – here’s what has caught our eye over the past 24 hours. Blondes have more fun? Phil Foden’s new Paul Gascoigne inspired haircut appears to have started a trend, with Granit Xhaka the latest player to join the ice cream club. He revealed his new ‘style’ during a video call with his wife Leonita, who understandably looked a little shocked at what she saw. National team crests are just different from their club counterparts. Both are an integral part of the team’s history, and both are definitely tattooed on many of the fans. However, in the past decade or so, most national team crests have already been updated and bought into the modern era of design. National team crests also seem to be simpler and have less elements than their club counterparts. That being said, I did find some ways to further simplify them. In some cases through minor changes without removing elements. It was also interesting to note how similar some of the crests can be to each other. For example Scotland, Netherlands & Wales all feature a roaring majestic lion or dragon. Or how Sweden and Finland, both nordic countries, feature their flags on a shield. I have tried...
Wales and Switzerland played out a tight draw in their opening game of Euro 2020 on Saturday. It was an open first half which Switzerland had the better of. However, it was Wales who came the closest to opening the scoring before the break. Daniel James got down the left and swung in an excellent cross for Kieffer Moore. The Cardiff City forward headed towards the far corner, but Yann Sommer produced a fine save to tip over. Down the other end, Fabian Schar had a flick from a corner saved by Danny Ward, and Haris Seferovic twice missed the target with shots inside the box. Just before the whistle, Vladimir Petkovic’s men had a glorious chance to take the lead when Breel Embolo laid off for Seferovic, but the 29-year-old’s shooting was once again wayward. The chances continued to come for S...
Wales captain Gareth Bale says he’s optimistic the team will qualify to the knockout stages of Euro 2020 despite been pitted alongside Italy, Turkey and Switzerland. Wales are expected to kick-off their campaign against Switzerland on Saturday and Bale in a pre-match press conference stated that they are well-prepared for the tournament. Bale is one of eight survivors from the Wales squad that reached the last four in France when Chris Coleman was in charge, and the Real Madrid star is looking no further than the crunch first game against the Swiss. “I think it’s similar,” said Bale when asked at his pre-match press conference about Wales’ expectations heading into Euro 2020 compared to last time out. “Coming on the back of 2016 people will argue that maybe we should be doing things, but w...
Baku Olympic Stadium is the venue as Wales and high-flying Switzerland exchange tackles in their Euro 2020 Group A opener on Saturday. The teams have experienced contrasting fortunes gearing up for the tournament. Note: You can watch all Euro 2020 games via live streaming. Wales vs Switzerland Wales and Switzerland have never met at a major tournament before, with the Dragons running out 2-0 victors in their most recent competitive showdown back in the Euro 2012 qualifiers. None of their seven historical encounters have ended as a draw, friendlies included, with Switzerland picking up five triumphs compared to Wales’ two wins. Going back t...
Antonio Conte has major doubts about becoming Tottenham’s next head coach and is inclined to turn them down, according to Sky Italy. Spurs have been in talks with the former Chelsea boss, who left Inter Milan after winning Serie A last month. But after considering the role for several days, Conte remains unconvinced Spurs are a team ready to win trophies immediately. The Italian has won five league titles in the last decade and is looking for another ‘winning project’. He is trying to understand if it is possible to bridge the gap with the top four or five Premier League teams in a short period of time – with Spurs having finished 24 points behind champions Manchester City. It is understood Spurs would not pressure him to win trophies. If the parties fail to strike a deal, Conte could also...
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday denied a newspaper report that he had said he would rather bodies piled “high in their thousands” than order a third COVID-19 lockdown. Johnson is facing a stream of allegations in newspapers – all of them denied – about everything from his muddled initial handling of the COVID-19 crisis to questions over who financed the redecoration of his official apartment. The Daily Mail newspaper cited unidentified sources as saying that, in October, shortly after agreeing to a second lockdown, Johnson told a meeting in Downing Street: “No more fucking lockdowns – let the bodies pile high in their thousands.” Asked whether he had made the remark, Johnson told broadcasters: “No, but again, I think the important thing, I think, that people want us to get o...
It’s international break time, much to the dismay of fantasy football players all around the world. The international break tends to divide opinion. There are some who love watching their national side, while others just can’t wait for club football to return. If you’re on the latter side of that debate, maybe these games are something you ought to be keeping an eye on. Here are five games to watch over the international break. Belgium vs Wales (Wednesday 24th March, 19:45 GMT) Wales pulled off one of the shocks of the tournament, knocking out Belgium World Cup qualifying in Europe is tougher than it seems. While it feels like the usual suspects make it through with ease every time, there’s always potential for an upset. There are ten qualifying groups, and only the group winners gain auto...
Tottenham Hotspur coach Jose Mourinho said the team are supporting Dutchman Steven Bergwijn who missed two clear chances in Wednesday’s top-of-the-table clash at Liverpool and received criticism on social media after the 2-1 defeat. “I don’t know what I can do apart from the player knowing in this club we are all together,” Mourinho told a news conference ahead of Sunday’s game at home to Leicester City. “We lose, we win and we draw all together. So he has us and we have him. In here we don’t feel any individual criticism, we never feel it that way, it is always about us, so no problem. “He’s one of my boys, period. There is no point to boo, to individualise. He’s a good professional, he works hard for the team, he gives everything he can.” Second-placed Spurs slipped three points behind L...
