Tim Burton’s Batman Returns in New DC Comics Series

Cue up the Danny Elfman score — maybe even Prince’s “Batdance” — and get ready to revisit Tim Burton’s Batman universe. Today, DC Comics announced they’re spending this summer in the filmmaker’s Dark Deco’d Gotham City with Batman ’89. Written by original screenwriter Sam Hamm and brought to the page by artist Joe Quinones, the DC Digital First series will tell all new adventures featuring Michael Keaton’s incarnation of Batman. A press release promises the return of Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman, the debut of a new Robin (perhaps Marlon Wayans, as originally planned?), and the two-faced evolution of Billy Dee Williams’ Harvey Dent. Altogether, there will be 12 new chapters that “pull on a number of threads left dangling by the prolific director.” The first six will debut on July 27th with ...

50 Most Anticipated Movies of 2021

Anticipating movies these days is a fool’s errand. Unless it’s guaranteed to be hitting a streaming platform, the release date of any film should have an asterisk appended to it. That’s not cynical, but the nature of covering this industry amidst the pandemic. So, you could imagine how fun this list was to put together. (Spoiler: It wasn’t.) Dragging over last year’s offerings to this one seems like an easy task, but the shift opens the door for so many questions, all of which boil down to: “What are the odds?” For many features — you know, like Ghostbusters: Afterlife, or No Time to Die, or Halloween Kills, or any film without a streaming opt-in — the release date is as certain as we are about anything right now in life. “We’ll see” is the name of the game. Having said that, a few studios...

Mad Max Spinoff Furiosa Receives 2023 Release Date

Mark those calendars, ’cause Warner Bros. has officially announced a release date for Furiosa. The Mad Max spinoff film will arrive on June 23rd, 2023. Furiosa serves as the prequel to the acclaimed 2015 epic Mad Max: Fury Road. George Miller is returning to direct, co-write, and produce the project alongside Doug Mitchell. An exact premise hasn’t been revealed, but as its title indicates, the movie will revolve around a young Furiosa, played by Anya Taylor-Joy. Our 2020 Performer of the Year has unsurprisingly picked up a ton of buzz the last few months thanks to The Queen’s Gambit, the most viewed scripted limited-series in Netflix history. Taylor-Joy will be joined by Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, though their exact roles aren’t known at this time. Editors’ Picks...

With theaters shuttered up and movie chains filing for bankruptcy, one might argue it’s been a pretty crap year for cinema. Financially speaking, they’re not wrong. But, art is a funny thing. It has a way of enduring even the most arduous obstacles — you know, that whole Ian Malcolm, Jurassic Park, “life finds a way” bit — and this year was a testament to that truth. Art had no issue finding a proper stage. That stage, as fate...

Christopher Nolan Blasts HBO Max As “Worst Streaming Service” in Light of “Arrogant” Warner Bros. Deal

Last week, Warner Bros. announced plans to simultaneously release all 17 of their 2021 titles (The Matrix 4, Dune, The Suicide Squad etc.) directly to HBO Max and to theaters. The news sent shockwaves throughout the film industry due to the drastic consequences it will have not just on the existence of movie theaters, but on the entire Hollywood apparatus. Naturally, Christopher Nolan had some opinions on the matter. On Monday, the Tenet writer-director told The Hollywood Reporter that Warner Bros.’ decision to unload their entire release schedule onto the new streaming service — which is owned by their parent company WarnerMedia and had a middling launch earlier this year— will be disastrous. “Some of our industry’s biggest filmmakers and most important ...

Mads Mikkelsen In Talks to Replace Johnny Depp in Fantastic Beasts: Report

Hollywood moves fast, even during a pandemic. No less than a week after Warner Bros. announced the departure of Johnny Depp from the Fantastic Beasts franchise, reports are already coming in on a potential replacement. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen is in talks to replace Depp as Gellert Grindelwald. The behind-the-scenes brevity makes sense, seeing how the film is already in production following postponements to Covid-19. If all goes accordingly, Mikkelsen will be the third star to portray the villain. Prior to Depp, Colin Farrell had worn Grindelwald’s seemingly ever-changing mug, all before exiting stage left by the end of 2016’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The untitled third adventure in the Harry Potter prequel series hits theaters on Ju...

Warner Bros. Pushes Back The Batman to 2022

As the pandemic continues to cripple the film industry, Warner Bros. has once again been forced to reconfigure its upcoming release state. Notably, The Batman has been pushed all the way to 2022. The move was widely anticipated following Warner Bros.’s earlier announcement moving Dune to October 1st, 2021 — The Batman’s previous release date. The Robert Pattinson-starring Batflick will now swoop into theaters on March 4th, 2022. Additionally, Warner Bros. has moved The Flash to November 4th, 2022 and Shazam! 2 to June 2nd, 2023. Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, previously set for release in December 2021, is now undated. However, one major tentpole is actually seeing its release date moved up. To replace Black Adam on the calendar, The Matrix 4 will now premiere on Dec...

Warner Bros. Offering Joaquin Phoenix $50 Million for Two Joker Sequels: Report

Love it or hate it, but Joker was a smash hit for Warner Bros. Todd Phillips’ divisive DC thriller not only became the first R-rated film to gross over a billion dollars, but also danced away with two Oscars for star Joaquin Phoenix and composer Hildur Guðnadóttir. So, it’s not surprising that the studio is laying down the big bucks to keep the laughter going. No joke! Insiders tell the Mirror that Warner Bros. is on the market for not one, but two sequels in the near future, and that they’re willing to pay Phoenix a staggering $50 million to reprise his Oscar-winning role. “It’s still being negotiated,” the publication’s sources told them, “but the scripts are being written and Joaquin is very engaged with it.” The Mirror continued, “They plan to make two sequels in the next four yea...

Wonder Woman 1984 Delayed Until Christmas

Wonder Woman 1984, photo via Warner Bros. Wonder Woman 1984 is changing its release date… again. The Patty Jenkins-directed sequel has been delayed until Christmas, reports Deadline, primarily due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The Wonder Woman sequel was originally scheduled to hit theaters in 2019 on December 13th, but the studio then decided to push it to Memorial Day Weekend in 2020. Once COVID-19 spread to the US, they realized it should be delayed once more to this October. And now, at long last, it appears things are coming full circle — seemingly for good — for Gal Gadot and company. “Patty Jenkins is an exceptional filmmaker and with Wonder Woman 1984 she has delivered an incredibly dynamic film that moviegoers of all ages around the world will absolutely love. We’re very pr...

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune Gets Epic First Trailer: Watch

At long last, we have our first real look at the world of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune. After much teasing and deliberation, Warner Bros. has let loose the first trailer for its star-studded epic in anticipation of its December 18th release. The trailer came packaged with a first look featuring the cast and crew that was hosted by uber fan Stephen Colbert. As you’ll see, Villeneuve has done his homework. The imagination within Frank Herbert’s iconic 1965 novel is on full display, and it appears the filmmaker may even surpass the creative heights he reached with 2017’s Blade Runner 2049. Everyone looks spectacular too, particularly Timothée Chalamet as Prince Paul Atreides. Villeneuve isn’t one to waste his star power, and it’s clear even now that this A-list cast will certainly add vivid s...
