Whethan Brings Back Signature Dance-Pop Sound On First Independent Release In 6 Years, “Fall Out Girl”

You heard it here first: Whethan is the official shapeshifter—or soundshifter, rather—of dance music. And he’s now breaking away in more ways than one. Whethan’s latest single, “Fall Out Girl” (with Zai1k), is his first independent release in six years following a two-album stint with Atlantic Records.  “Fall Out Girl” is an uplifting callback to the sounds of this dance music prodigy’s past, from the playful sonics and youthful enthusiasm of his debut album, Fantasy, to the moodier, too-cool-for-school edge of its hip hop follow-up, MIDNIGHT. Anthemic lyrics rasp above pumping house synths and a propulsive bass line while Zai1k’s heady vocals send us along at a breakneck pace. It’s an electronic song at its hea...

Whethan DJed a Pop-Up Rave at an Abandoned L.A. Zoo

Lions and tigers and bears… and Whethan? Whethan recently DJed at an abandoned zoo in L.A., where he threw down for a surprise pop-up show. A police helicopter eventually showed up, but not before the prodigious “Savage” producer’s untamed performance, which showcased his new sophomore album MIDNIGHT. The performance was organized by Brownies & Lemonade at the Old Los Angeles Zoo, which they called “one of the wildest locations” they’d ever been for a show. It was the latest in the esteemed promoter’s “B&L Pop Up Series” following a sun-kissed DJ set by GRiZ at L.A.’s Dockweiler Beach in early April. Thanks to pie-in-the-sky sets like these, Brownies & Lemonade, who were named EDM.com‘s Best Event Orga...

Listen to Whethan’s Stunning Sophomore Album, “Midnight”

Queue this one up on your car speakers and prepare to be taken on a ride.  Out April 29th via Atlantic Records, Whethan‘s MIDNIGHT album is a stunning sophomore showing, proving in only nine tracks and 27 minutes that its critically acclaimed predecessor, FANTASY, was only the tip of his ever-enlarging iceberg of imagination. “[It’s] going to be a totally different side of me you haven’t heard before,” Whethan had promised in January. Just hit play on its booming opening track, “LOCK IT UP” (with Yeat, midwxst and Matt Ox) and you’ll immediately notice the growth. Quirky, dance pop-minded sound design has been traded out with swells of rap (“OUT THE WINDOW” with Overpade), hyperpop (“MENTAL”...

22 Game-Changing Electronic Albums Coming In 2022

They say every cloud has a silver lining. With the pandemic finally in the rearview, electronic dance music festivals are back—and so are many of the scene’s beloved artists who have largely remained in the shadows. The scourge of COVID-19 vicious, but it seems these artists have now emerged with a renewed sense of vision and verve. And after two years of creative strangulation, they are hungrier than ever. If 2022’s albums are any indication, we’re on the precipice of the best years for dance music in history—just like David Guetta boldy predicted. Here are 22 of the most anticipated albums expected to release this year. Flume Palaces, Flume‘s third studio album and first since 2016’s critically acclaimed Skin, is slated to release on May 20th. Whethan Previews Electronic-Rock Crossover Ahead of Upcoming Album

Whethan‘s next era is going to be unlike anything fans have heard previously.  “The next project is going to be a totally different side of me you haven’t heard before,” he recently tweeted. “Way different from Fantasy or Life of a Wallflower.” The “Savage” producer then let the music do the talking, posting a new preview showcasing an unreleased electronic-rock crossover. A dexterous drum fill queues in heavy rock power chords with fluttering, 8-bit style synths leading the melody. Though the clip is brief, it does tell us one thing: Whethan certainly hasn’t lost his experimental spirit.  It’s been roughly a year-and-a-half since the release of Fantasy and while Whethan has been very quiet during that time, he recen...

Fresh Pressed Reintroduces Festivals to the Pacific Northwest

My eyes were fixated on the Tacoma skyline as I lay on the sharp, prickly grass below the only shaded structure in the venue. Gazing out into the horizon, a silhouette of high rises framed the lonesome stage that would be the focus of the evening.  Grappled by my surroundings, I was unaware of the impromptu game of Duck, Duck, Goose that had attendees cheering for the winner as she slid down to the ground. Nor was I aware of the spontaneous crowd that rose from the field to partake in a yoga session.  All throughout the venue, mini beehives of activity sprung up, all in high spirits, waiting for the reverberation of the speakers to pull them to the dancefloor. Over an hour later, the crowd cheered on as the music finally returned to Haub Family Field. Nora En Pure performing...
