Summary

  • Independent powerhouse A24 officially unveils the first full trailer for the upcoming sci-fi horror feature Backrooms
  • The highly anticipated adaptation translates 20-year-old filmmaker Kane Parsons’ viral YouTube found-footage sensation into a theatrical format
  • Oscar nominees Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve lead the cast as they navigate an endless and terrifying yellow-hued labyrinth

A24 has officially released the first trailer for Backrooms, transforming a massive internet horror sensation into a legitimate cinematic event. Building upon the viral found-footage YouTube series originally created by Kane Parsons, the upcoming sci-fi horror feature scales up the terrifying concept of liminal spaces without losing its analog-driven dread.

Directed by Parsons in his feature debut, the film marks a historic milestone as the 20-year-old creator becomes the youngest filmmaker to ever collaborate with A24. The narrative expands on his widely viewed digital mythos, which first captivated audiences in 2022. The script, penned by Will Soodik, follows characters who discover a mysterious doorway situated in the basement of a mundane furniture showroom. This ominous portal leads directly into an endless, yellow-hued labyrinth of empty office spaces illuminated by harsh, buzzing fluorescent lights.

Starring Oscar nominees Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, the visual adaptation leans heavily into the suffocating atmosphere of an impossible, ever-growing environment that aggressively defies physics and human reason. Moving away from conventional jump scares, the trailer emphasizes a deeply unsettling tension built on isolation and architectural instability.

Further cementing the project’s transition from an internet creepypasta to a major Hollywood release, the feature is supported by a powerhouse producing team that includes James Wan’s Atomic Monster, Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment, and Chernin Entertainment.
