Summary
- Mercedes-Benz to launch a fifth-generation A-Class in 2028 with both EV and hybrid options
- The entry-level model will use the Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA) and retain its iconic hatchback design
- Electric variants will rival Audi’s upcoming electric A2
Mercedes-Benz is officially reviving the A-Class for a fifth generation dropping in 2028, reversing previous plans to discontinue the entry-level model in 2025. Sparked by a cooling EV market, the German automaker is extending the lifespan of its quintessential hatchback and pivoting its blueprint to accommodate both internal combustion and fully electric powertrains. The fresh iteration will ride on the highly adaptable Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA), sharing its DNA with the newly launched CLA while keeping the model’s iconic five-door shape intact.
Despite rumors of a shift toward a crossover or MPV silhouette, the next A-Class stays true to its traditional hatch roots, though it will boast a slightly lifted stance to house the battery pack in electric trims. Inside, the cabin focuses on maximized outward visibility and seamless access, aiming to capture the demographic left hanging by the axed B-Class. Aesthetically, expect a sharp evolution of current design codes—think the aggressive shark-nose front end seen on modern Benz models, framed doors, and an angled rear tailgate. The upcoming model is gearing up to be a direct rival to Audi’s upcoming electric A2.
The new MMA platform gives Mercedes the flex to build both standard ICE and EV variants on the exact same production line, likely out of its Kecskemét, Hungary plant. The electric A-Class is slated to run an 800V electrical system paired with either a 58kWh LFP or an 85kWh net battery, delivering rear-wheel drive and pushing roughly 224 horsepower in the entry-level single-motor setup. Mild-hybrid flavors will tap a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine co-developed with Geely, putting down up to 220 combined horsepower. For the purists, an eventual high-performance AMG EV model pushing around 500 horsepower is also on the table.
