Summary

  • Paramount Pictures is officially celebrating the 40th anniversary of Top Gun with a limited theatrical re-release
  • The 1986 film will be paired back-to-back with Top Gun: Maverick for a special double feature event
  • Screenings will be available across premium large-screen formats including IMAX, 4DX, and Dolby Cinema

Paramount Pictures is officially taking audiences back to the danger zone, announcing a massive theatrical re-release to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the original Top Gun.

Marking a major milestone for the iconic Tom Cruise blockbuster, the studio is reviving the 1986 classic for an exclusive, one-week-only engagement. This celebratory theatrical run will feature the original Tony Scott-directed film paired directly with its highly acclaimed 2022 sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, creating an unprecedented back-to-back double feature.

To fully elevate the high-octane aerial sequences, the anniversary event will be presented across multiple premium large-screen formats. Paramount Pictures confirmed this release marks the first time the original Top Gun will be officially showcased in IMAX, D-BOX, 4DX, and ScreenX configurations, while also returning to Dolby Cinema. The cultural staple initially drew $353.8 million USD against a $15 million USD budget, maintaining a legacy that later propelled its 36-years-later sequel to gross $1.5 billion USD globally. To further commemorate the milestone, attendees at the Top Gun Day opening kick-off event will receive a free collector’s print.

The announcement arrives shortly after the studio confirmed a third installment in the franchise, with Cruise returning as Maverick.

The Top Gun 40th anniversary double feature hits theaters for a one-week run beginning May 13.
