The 31st South African Music Awards: Spotlight on Pan-African Talent

The stage is set for the 31st South African Music Awards (SAMA 31), and anticipation is building around the Rest of Africa Award—one of the evening’s most prestigious categories. This award has grown into a symbol of pan-African collaboration, celebrating artists who embody the spirit of unity through music.

This year’s nominees form a remarkable lineup of Afropop’s brightest stars. Ayra Starr is nominated for her highly acclaimed album The Year I Turned 21, a bold project that has cemented her as one of the leading voices of her generation. Kenya’s Bensoul makes the list with The Party & After Party, showcasing East Africa’s unique sonic flavors. Wizkid, a global giant, enters with Morayo, a project that balances intimacy with star power. Tems brings Born in the Wild, a reflective and groundbreaking body of work that resonates globally. Rounding out the list, Fireboy DML is nominated with Adedamola, an album that demonstrates his versatility and growth as one of Nigeria’s strongest exports.

The award has previously highlighted exceptional artistry from across the continent, with last year’s winner, Edgar Muzah of Zimbabwe, setting a high bar with his album Son of a Tribe (Royalty Edition). His fusion of traditional rhythms with modern soundscapes was a powerful reminder of Africa’s boundless creativity.

According to SAMA spokesperson Unati Gwija, the award’s growing prominence reflects the event’s dedication to pan-African unity: “Edgar’s win last year showed the depth of innovation in African music. As more artists across the continent gain recognition, we expect this category to continue unearthing extraordinary talent.”

With the upcoming ceremony, global streaming audiences and television viewers alike can expect an unforgettable night—one that not only honors South Africa’s vibrant music scene but also celebrates the voices uniting Africa under one rhythm.
