Three decades after first becoming one of the defining songs of the Britpop era, Oasis’ “Wonderwall” has found a new life on the charts thanks to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The band’s enduring hit re-entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 27 after England fans adopted it as the team’s unofficial anthem throughout the tournament.
Following several of England’s biggest victories, thousands of fans could be heard belting out the song inside stadiums and out on the streets, with players joining in the celebrations after matches. The singalongs quickly spread online, introducing the 1995 classic to a new generation while giving longtime fans a solid excuse to put on one of Oasis’ most beloved songs.
Naturally, the renewed enthusiasm translated into a spike in listening. Billboard reports that the surge was enough to send the song back onto the Hot 100 at No. 27, powered by 8.7 million US streams during the latest tracking week, a 73% increase from the week prior. Radio audience also climbed 41%, while digital downloads more than doubled, helping the “Wonderwall” climb back onto the Hot 100 for the first time since completing its original 20-week run in 1996.

“Today is gonna be the day,” is right. “Wonderwall’s return to the Hot 100 is just the latest highlight in an exceptional year for Oasis, following the band’s long-awaited reunion, induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and the upcoming documentary Don’t Look Back in Anger, which arrives in theaters and IMAX on September 11th before streaming later this year on Hulu in the US and Disney+ internationally.
Noel Gallagher has welcomed the song’s latest renaissance. Reflecting on crowds adopting “Wonderwall” during England’s World Cup run, he told The Sun, “‘Wonderwall’ belongs to the people,” calling the singalongs “a magical moment between the people and the players.”
