Pusha T Links Up with IDK on Soul-Searching New Song “LiFE 4 A LiFE”

Pusha T Links Up with IDK on Soul-Searching New Song "LiFE 4 A LiFE"

IDK has recruited Pusha T for “LiFE 4 A LiFE,” a preview of the Maryland rapper’s upcoming independent mixtape, E.T.D.S.Even the Devil Smiles, due out January 23rd. Stream it below.

Produced by Kaytranada, the contemplative, soul-searching track features a predictably impressive verse from Pusha T, who taps into the song’s theme of protecting one’s mental fortitude, even in the face of carceral systems or prying eyes.

“I can’t even podcast, giving all my past out,” Pusha T raps astutely. “Watching n****s crash out, telling who they ask ’bout/ Interview with anybody sitting in a glass house/ Imma pull that mask out, all you n****s mascots/ Looking at the difference between a have and the have-nots.”

IDK says the collaboration came together organically. “I made the song with Pusha T in mind from the moment it was finished and sent it to him right away,” he explained in a press release. “He told me he was in, and I let it live without pressure. A few months later, right before he released the Clipse album Let God Sort Em Out, he called me. After the call, he sent me a photo of his handwritten verse, then asked for my email and where to send it. Everything aligned naturally.”

According to IDK, the forthcoming mixtape is inspired by ’90s and 2000s mixtape culture, Black expressionism, and his own journey of survival and reclamation of self despite his time spent in the criminal justice system. The project will ultimately serve as “proof that creation could breathe in captivity.”
